Weekly information from us to you

The free flight aviary at the Botanic Gardens Zoo has been reopened and its flying residents are being reintroduced back into their home.

An inspection of the aviary structure earlier this year found a white ant infestation in the support poles, which forced the aviary’s immediate closure to ensure the safety of its feathered residents and visitors to the facility.

Repairs to the free flight aviary saw the old timber support poles, which had become weakened over time, replaced with sturdier steel ones.

During the $100,000 works, which commenced in September, the birds were rehoused in separate cages at the zoo and on Thursday approximately 25 birds were released back into the aviary by Council staff.

“The other birds will be slowly released back in groups over the next week to ensure we do not cause them too much distress,” Council’s Director Environmental and Community Services, Janice Summerhayes said.

The species of birds housed in the free flight aviary are carefully chosen, they cannot not be too territorial or destructive as they may damage the aviary or harm each other.

The free flight aviary, which opened in the early 90’s, has had many bird species call it home. The aviary has housed over 80 different varieties of species, and prior to its closure, hosted approximately 250 birds.

At the time of construction it was named the biggest free flight aviary in Australia.

Repairs to the structure included installing new support poles, restitching of the netting, trimmng plants and trees, remulching of the garden beds and new plantings. Other repairs were made to the various bird boxes, boardwalk and walking paths within the aviary.

The free flight aviary provides an opportunity for the public to get up close and personal with the birds, as they would be in the wild, which offers visitors to the zoo a great spot to take some great pictures.

If you would like to visit the birds in their refurbished home, or any of their friends at the zoo, visit the Botanic Gardens between 9am and 5pm every day.

The project to demolish the Hampden Bridge is complete. The contractor undertaking the work demobilised their

equipment from the work site recently with a final clean-up and soil testing carried out last week.

The work site has been rehabilitated, seeded and landscaping works have been undertaken.

The Hampden Bridge was collapsed into the Murrumbidgee River on Wednesday 20 August.

The spans of the bridge were then removed, followed by the 2 sets of in-stream pylons.

The pylon on the eastern side of the Murrumbidgee River was retained.

The next stage in the Hampden Bridge story is the implementation of the legacy project on the former bridge site. Council staff are currently reviewing the Heritage Interpretation Strategy for the Hampden Bridge site which will inform the Legacy Project.

NOvember is national Asbestos Awareness Month and aims to educate Australians about the dangers of asbestos in and around homes. Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world. In the lead-up to Asbestos Awareness Day (Friday 28 NOvember) all Australians especially homeowners, renovators, tradies and handymen need to ‘Get to kNOw Asbestos this NOvember’ by visiting asbestosawareness.com.au to learn how to protect themselves and families from exposure to dangerous asbestos fibres.

With asbestos-related diseases continuing to increase among Australians as a direct result of exposure to asbestos fibres during home renovations and maintenance, the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of asbestos and how best to manage it in and around homes, cannot be overstated.

Asbestos Awareness Month aims to educate as many Australians as possible about the dangers of asbestos and how best to manage it.

Many incorrectly believe that only fibro homes contain asbestos. Asbestos products can most likely be found in any Australian home built or renovated before 1987 even brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes.

Most people can’t tell whether building materials contain asbestos just by looking at them. Asbestos can be under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings and ceiling space (insulation), eaves, garages, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, outdoor toilets and backyard sheds – it could be anywhere!

It’s vital that everybody take the warnings seriously, that they stop playing ‘renovation roulette’ and protect themselves and their families from exposure to asbestos fibres during renovations and maintenance.

Before renovating, visit asbestosawareness.com.au to learn where asbestos might be found in their home, the dangers of disturbing it and how best to manage it.

Say NO to asbestos this NOvember

As part of Asbestos Awareness Month Wagga Wagga City Council will be hosting Betty – The ADRI House (Asbestos Disease Research House) at Bunnings Warehouse car park on Sunday 9 November from 12 – 5pm.

of the existing equine precinct at the University. The Centre features a new warm-up arena with dust

suppression system, two new competition arenas, new covered day yards, road upgrades, new horse wash bay, improved spectator area, improved amenities and car parking.

Mr Hunter Doughty from the School of Animal and Equine Sciences at CSU said, “This is a great community initiative and the first step towards a regional equestrian centre to facilitate the running of international standard equestrian competition across disciplines in the city.

“Already there is national interest in the venue and competitor numbers have skyrocketed at this new venue. Future development of the facility will be the determining factor in just how much the region benefits from the initiative.”

Echoing his thoughts, Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said, “This project is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration with key stakeholders and is a significant investment in the future of equestrian in the Riverina.

“The centre provides Wagga Wagga with a first class facility that will not only benefit Riverina equestrian users, but will also attract riders nationally and internationally to future events. We look forward to seeing some of the best riders and horses perform in our City.”

Funding for the facility was made up of contributions of $955,810 from Wagga Wagga City Council, $320,000 from CSU plus the land, existing Equine Centre infrastructure and the $500,000 upgrade of Agriculture Avenue, planning and in-kind support from the Riverina Equestrian Association (REA).

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication

There are many everyday issues that most local councils face in Australia. Dwindling revenue coupled with our need to do more to support

our communities means that we face the constant battle of trying to best allocate our scarce resources amongst many competing priorities, which often results in the needs of the community not being met. As a long serving councillor and former Mayor, it is painful to see works and services that are so desperately needed suffer due to a lack of funds.

It is irresponsible however,

for the council to live beyond its means and to create debt that would place a further burden to future councils. Recent cost cutting has been a painful but necessary step in order to bolster the viability and strength of this vibrant city and to set us up for success into the future.

It is this ongoing doubt about the financial state of NSW councils that has led to the proposed reforms now

being considered by the State Government. Personally I have no desire for Wagga Wagga to dominate smaller councils in our region as they all play a vital role in representing the views of their ratepayers. The best result will be that all councils retain their identity whilst putting in place collaborative arrangements. These types of agreements could provide the services and facilities communities

need whist remaining locally focused.

Recent developments like the hospital upgrade, residential development at The Mill site and over fifty million dollars of development approvals at various retail precincts, all point to a bright future. It is true that we live in an agricultural area that is often overlooked as a major industry. It is equally true the military bases, university,

TAFE and medical services are all major factors in the economic strength of the City. It is vitally important we as Councillors do not lose sight of what has made us a prosperous and successful city.

BEACH UPGRADE: Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Commercial and Economic Development Peter Adams, Strategic Officer Rob Sharpe and Director Environmental and Community Services Janice Summerhayes inspect the progress of the new BBQ and shelter as part of the Wagga Beach landscape upgrade.

Launched earlier this week, My AppVenture is a live, dynamic iPhone and Android app that lets visitors choose their own “Appventure” or can design one for them. This is a world first visitation application, which has been developed by Coolamon Shire Council, Junee Shire Council and Wagga Wagga City Council in conjunction with Wagga Wagga tech company, 365cups.

Striving to grow and develop the local visitor economy of Coolamon, Junee and Wagga Wagga Local Government Areas, local businesses, events and tourism operators have been invited to take part in this leading edge app and its 12 month strategic marketing campaign.

According to Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Rod Kendall, this project will deliver many positive outcomes for our operators, the community and the region.

“My AppVenture is a very exciting and innovative way for Wagga, Junee and Coolamon Councils to work together and achieve a positive outcome for the community. We anticipate that the app will benefit local tourism operators and drive overnight visitation showcasing our beautiful region”.

My Appventure is offering packages, ranging from $500 to $2,000 for industry to appear on the app for 12 months. According to Tania Sibrey from Food I Am, this app presents a great opportunity for industry and stakeholders to view real time usage and analytics, updates and reports and to measure their return on investment.

“I think this will be an amazing app for visitors to the area and showcases the variety of attractions and events on offer. We all use our phones so much these days and this innovation shows how progressive the region is towards tourism,” she said.

Councils collaborate to boost local tourism

Wagga Wagga City Council will be hosting free seminars each Thursday evening during November in order to help residents learn more about finding environmentally and economically smart solutions for their home.

The Smart Homes – Winning Ways to Save series will arm participants with the knowledge to help them improve the sustainability of their home with the aim of reducing water and electricity bills,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer, Alice Kent said.

Local experts will cover themes of planning a new build or retrofitting an existing residence, installing solar systems, energy efficiency when heating or cooling your home, and tips to reduce your water consumption in the house and garden.

“We have an impressive lineup of presenters who are all experts in their fields including; architects, a horticulturalist, solar systems professionals, a plumber and a builder,” Miss Kent added.

“This series is a great opportunity to ask the questions that can help to improve the sustainability of your home and hopefully save residents money on their bills.

“The workshops have been coordinated by Dr Andrew Wallace, who will also present at each workshop on the changing climate of our region and how we can best adapt.”

Work is progressing well on the implementation of stage one of the million dollar Riverside Wagga Beach landscaping upgrade.

“Work on this project commenced in July and to date a great deal of work on important underground infrastructure, such as electrical and irrigation upgrades, has been undertaken,” Council’s Director Commercial and Economic Development, Peter Adams said.

“It is great to be delivering this important stage of the Riverside project. The more visible construction of two key structures has been taking shape in recent weeks with new BBQ shelters being erected close to the river to make the most of the views.

“These shelters are an important part of the project and provide extra facilities for residents and visitors to the area. The infrastructure has been designed with flooding in mind and all the key infrastructure included in the project has been engineered to tolerate flood water.”

The project has also seen the installation of new turf to improve access to the beach and river. Visitors will also see new lighting in the area and significant new plantings from the beach to the rocks area.

“Contractors have been working on site since July and have steadily progressed through the project and they are confident that the beach will be ready for the Christmas school holidays,” Dr Adams added.

“The overall aim of the project is to reactivate the Wagga Beach precinct and develop the area as a focal point and destination for residents and visitors, as well as create linkages to the City’s CBD and existing civic precinct.”
