10.4.2 Council Meeting 2018-11-26 Motion: Be it resolved that the Council minutes from 2018-11-26 be accepted as distributed. Moved by: Ravi Herath Seconded by: Chris Samra 30/0/0 Carried 10.5 Old Business 10.5.1 Executive Updates • IxL conference has confirmed double the funding from last year. Name change to

“Impact by Leadership”. Will have higher quality marketing and swag associated with the event.

• Reminder of the Education Council policy forum tomorrow, 2018-12-04. • Year end party meeting with Douglas College, Capilano University, and Kwantlen

Polytechnic University in January. Would like to combine budgets for a larger multi-school party at the end of April or May 2019.

• Executives have agreed to have 33% international student spaces available for the Sun Run.

• Had mechanic out to service coffee machine at Annacis Island.

• Week of festivities at Aerospace Technology Campus with ugly sweater contest, hot chocolate, a movie night, and more.

• Held focus group at Downtown Campus receiving feedback from students there. Generally, students at that campus do not feel like BCIT students. Heard lots of simple and basic requests like having a quiet space to study and accessible washrooms available. Space on that campus is limited to students and they do not feel like they can stay and study there outside of class time. Would like to see each campus have its own mini governance structure.

• Met with Wellness team and are working to host Doggie De-stress at satellite campuses. A one-month wellness challenge is coming in February based on the 8 dimensions of wellness; will be partnering with Rec Services. Any ideas are welcome.

Discussion: • How many students came out to the Downtown focus group?

• 8, which does not sound like a lot, but it is for that campus.

10.5.2 Clubs Committee Report • See attached. Granted $3,864 to clubs, the highest amount this year. $2000 was

granted to Holladay event as there are 11 clubs involved in this event; it is the highest attended student-led event. No profits are being made by the event, it is all going to charity.

10.5.2.1 Badminton Club Sanctioning • See attached. If sanctioned, the club will be working with Rec Services to have access

to booking the gym facilities. Motion: Be it resolved that Badminton Club be a sanctioned BCITSA club. Moved by: Jordan Holden Seconded by: Justin Cervantes 29/0/1 Carried 10.5.2.2 Startup BCIT Club Sanctioning • See attached. For helping Computer Systems Technology students gain co-op

positions as they mentioned only 66% are successful at getting positions. Motion: Be it resolved that Startup BCIT be a sanctioned BCITSA club. Moved by: Jordan Holden Seconded by: Hala Hassan Discussion: • Purpose of club is to collaborate and work on projects together. They wanted to start

it because of low co-op position success. • Computer Systems Technology has 100% success in finding co-op placements.

Confused as to what they are wanting to achieve if this is the case. • Working together to help start-ups form.

• Does Entrepreneurship help students in the same way?

• Recommended that they partner with the program. • If approved, this club would be in direct competition with Entrepreneurship’s

Match Board. Think this club goes against what they are trying to do by connecting students together across campus, circumventing the service. Recommend not sanctioning for this reason.

• Match Board is matching students together from different programs. Might not be direct competition, interested to see their integration with Entrepreneurship.

• They seem to want to get students from within their program together and form teams to work on portfolio projects. Would likely make it easier for matches to be

Page 6: Council Meeting Agenda Monday, December 3 , 2018 5:30pm ......2018/12/03  · Council Meeting Agenda Monday, December 3rd, 2018 5:30pm – 7:30pm SE2 324 Council Chambers 10.1 Call

made across campus with this club existing and promoting the service to its members, integrating general students and club members.

• How new is Match Board? • It was started in September. Have seen ideas posted there.

• They have 60 people signed up for this club and there is a lot of excitement and

passion from these students. They are wanting to partner with Entrepreneurship and can bring more students to this service. Funding would go towards hackathons and other computing events.

• Purpose of the SA is to serve students, do not see direct competition.

• Opportunity for organic marketing for Entrepreneurship with a whole club using the Match Board service.

• Neither of the points on their application say they are focusing on startups.

• Only about 1/3 of Computer Systems Technology students are able to get into co-op program, maybe this is where the numbers they presented come from.

• Currently are 6 ventures on Match Board, with 15-20 students putting their names forward to this. Building a portfolio is not a reason we sanction clubs. Think that having a club running hackathons and other computing events would be great. Think they should rename themselves and better focus why they exist. • Found the name of club misleading.

Motion: Be it resolved that item 10.5.2.2 be tabled to 2019-01-14. Moved by: Christian Colquhoun Seconded by: Marizelle Magpantay 29/1/0 Carried 10.6 New Business 10.6.1 Capital Levy Investment Transfer 19:28 Councillor leaves. Count is 30.

Outline what you intend to accomplish upon sanctioning:

Briefly explain how your club will benefit student life: (give a few examples)

Promotional Paragraph to be used on the BCITSA website (mandatory):

Upon sanconing, we will promote the BCIT Badminton Club through social media and on campus in

that club objecve goals are executed smoothly.

The club will encourage students to parcipate in an acve lifestyle through badminton drop-in nights

and internal tournaments. This will promote physical acvity during the school year which will benefit

the wellbeing and mental health of students.

These club gatherings and events will also benefit the social life of students. They will give students the

opportunity to foster connecons outside of an academic seng and make friends from different

facules all while parcipang in a fun sport.

The BCIT Badminton Club aims to unite students who share an interest in the sport of badminton. We

Club Sustainability Given the section above, every club should also have a sustainability plan set in place to ensure the longevity of the club at BCIT. In a few sentences, describe your plans for sustainability for this year and years to come:

Membership This section is not required if you are applying as a Casual Club. Casual Clubs cannot collect membership fees from its members.

A common way of collecting funds for club operations is to charge a membership fee for new club members. GENERAL Clubs must have an annual membership fee of a minimum of $1.00 and maximum of $50.00.

Membership Fee: $

Entitles Member To (voting rights, free event admission, etc.):

To ensure the longevity of this club at BCIT, we will ensure to connually obtain input from members so

that the club keeps improving and maintains interest. It is also important to keep members engaged

throughout the school year by organizing enough tournaments and events. As long as member interest

is maintained and execuves are invested in assuring club objecves and goals are met, long-term

longevity should not be a concern even with changes in leadership in future years.
