Advisory Board The Domestic Violence Commission is excited to welcome 6 new
board members! Michael Gagner, The Honorable David Byrd, Greg-
ory Light, The Honorable Maureen Krueger, Michael Phillips and
The Honorable Rudy Locklear were sworn in at the August and Oc-
tober Board Meetings.
The Council for Women and Youth In-
volvement Advisory Board is also excit-
ed to welcome 3 new board members!
Anne Lasley, Candace Flanagan, and
Julie Hopfer were sworn in by Justice
Newby at the October Board Meeting.
The 2016 Purple Ribbon of Excellence Award was pre-
sented to three domestic and sexual violence agencies
by the Domestic Violence Commission at the October
Board meeting. Congratulations to Domestic Violence
Shelter and Services, Inc. of Wilmington, Orange County Rape Crisis
Center, and REACH of Macon
County on winning this years
award! The Purple Ribbon of Excel-
lence recognizes programs exhib-
iting excellence in community edu-
cation, outreach, and prevention
related to domestic and sexual vio-
lence.

2017 State of NC Internships Available Now!
The State of NC Internship Program is
offering 80 paid summer internship op-
portunities in state government agen-
cies. Applications for the Summer 2017
Internship program are now being ac-
cepted! A variety of professional intern-
ship opportunities are located across the
state and are available to North Carolina
residents studying at the undergraduate
or graduate level, or in law school. The
2017 State of North Carolina Internship Program booklet can be
found on our website. Deadlines for applications is January 13,
2017.
Candlelight Vigil held for Domestic Violence Victims
The Department of Administra-
tion and the North Carolina
Council for Women and Youth
Involvement (NCCFW/YI) hosted
a Candlelight Vigil in observance
of Domestic Violence Aware-
ness Month. The Candlelight
was held Thursday October 27, 2016 at the State Capitol Building.
Kathryn Johnston, Secretary of the Department of Administra-
tion, Gale McKoy Wilkins, Executive Director for NCCFW/YI,
Charles Campbell II, Chairman of the NC Domestic Violence Com-
mission and Christin Hewlin, Author and Survivor, spoke about
domestic violence in NC and recognized the 53 people who lost
their lives to domestic violence in 2016.
