Investing in a new trailed sprayer has significantly reduced application costs for Evesham-based

farming business, Shanael Farms Ltd. The 900+ acre dairy and arable operation with a total head count of 800 Pedigree Holsteins, also grows around 230 acres of winter wheat and 420 acres of maize for forage. The rest is down to permanent pasture for grazing and forage production.

Business Director, Steve Miller said, “Up until 2017, we used to use contractors for our chemical applications, but expansion to our dairy business meant we needed more staff and there was a definite plan to become ultra-efficient in every sector of our operation. We are currently milking a herd of 410, three times a day, averaging 13,800 litres. Taking on additional staff meant we were able to release some of our time to carry out more tasks for ourselves instead of using a contractor.”

Chemical applications was the first area to be reviewed and according to Steve’s calculations, they could be more timely and cost-effective by applying their own crop protection chemicals. In 2017, the business purchased a new John Deere 732i Trailed Sprayer from TAG. It came with a 24m boom (in 3m sections), hydraulically driven pump and a tank capacity of 3200 litres.

“There was nothing wrong with the quality of work from our contractor,” added Steve, “it was more that you tend to have to blanket apply when the contractor is available and we wanted to isolate each field and spray at exactly the right time. Having our own sprayer with the very latest specification allows us to do that. It’s proven to be absolutely the right decision.”

The John Deere 732i sprayer comes with self-levelling booms, section control - for auto-shut-off and is currently fitted with triple nozzle options, but can take up to five variations. Crop and application data is fed through Steve’s ‘myjohndeere’ account and together with the accuracy of the sprayer, he is able to be very precise on ordering quantities of chemical without having wasted left-overs.

“We are considering going into liquid fertiliser,” added Steve “and this sprayer is set-up to handle that as well as applying chemical so it gives us a lot of flexibility. It’s a brilliant sprayer, very accurate, easy to maintain and clean and the crops are looking really well - no signs of scorching or overspray, it’s doing a really good job. I get all the help I need from Trevor and John at TAG - it’s been so easy to operate that I haven’t really needed a lot of training - it’s simple and I’m really pleased with the sprayer, I can’t fault it.”

Annual maintenance checks are carried-out by the TAG service team and Steve helps out on the servicing to gain his NRoSO and Basis points. “by financing the sprayer, it’s costing about the same that our contractor would charge.” enthused Steve, “However, this sprayer will last way past the finance plan and in the long term, that will save us a lot of cost. That’s a no-brainer in anyone’s books.”

exciting opportunity and experience of traveling half way around the globe to work repairing John Deere equipment for New Zealand Farmers. Over the past year Evesham technician Declan Reynolds took up the adventure which saw him fly out of the UK in October heading straight into his second spring / summer season in a row. Declan headed for D&E’s Ashburton Branch, based in the centre of Canterbury plains which is an idyllic place to both work and find adventure. An area with diverse agriculture including Dairy, Arable and Vegetable growing has given Declan the opportunity to work on a diverse range of John Deere equipment expanding his knowledge and skills.

Heading home via the USA Declan took the opportunity stop off at some of the famous Waterloo and Harvester Works to see how the equipment is assembled and tested to John Deere’s high standards. Declan landed back in the UK on the 4th April ready to complete his 3rd harvest in 18 months.

Just two years ago, Russell Price Farm Services won the Farmers Weekly Contractor of the Year Award,

providing a full range of agricultural services - stubble-to-stubble, across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and south Shropshire. Russell’s always been the type of person who enjoys exploring new technologies and had the opportunity recently of visiting one of John Deere’s Research Centres in Germany, where he saw the company’s level of investment in both integrated solutions technology and people - it opened up his thoughts that the future technology revolution is definitely going to take farming by storm.

“The biggest challenge out there today,” commented Russell Price, “is data capture and how we handle it. The mass of information that we obtain from the various systems is held on different software and it’s been refreshing to finally find a system that can hold it all. Another headache has been compatibility, but the very latest app just released by John Deere is ‘MyJobConnect’ and it’s revolutionising the way we used to plan, manage and record our field jobs, it’s streets ahead of anything else out there.”

John Deere’s ‘MyJobConnect’ enables Russell to digitally set-up field jobs from an operations centre, loading all the instructions to the operator, including input rates, seed rates, cultivation task etc., then this is logged digitally and connects via the operator’s smart phone into the GreenStar system in the machine cab.

“We’ve completely done away with paper records,” commented Russell. “from now on, everything will be recorded digitally into the operations centre and apart from logging the jobs, everything is taken care of automatically. The job description data is forwarded to the operator in advance of starting his day. Once the

operator finishes a logged task, he confirms completion via his smart phone, and then everything - including field maps, seed rates, variable maps, input rates - everything is recorded in an organised reference log for future analysis and confirmation of crop husbandry records. With ‘MyJobConnect’ it’s basically done in an instant, whereas the old system took a lot of man hours, needed a lot of organisation and storage - and was always open to lost records or errors in inputting.”

Apart from a major agricultural contracting business, Russell also farms around 1500acres of arable land growing wheat, oil seed rape and potatoes and so the volume of daily tasks for the company is considerable, Russell’s farming business is a ‘monitor farm’ for Herefordshire and is on a three year research scheme with the AHDB so is seeing all levels of research and test results coming from real cropping test beds and being fed back into the industry.

“We’ve had a lot of assistance from the TAG team with regards to applying this new technology” added Russell “they really know this subject and they have given us fantastic sales and after-sales support. They are a really professional company who are focussed on ensuring we get the best out of our investment and they have looked after us all the way. I don’t invest in anything unless I can see a real return for the business and this new app looks as if it is going to be a real revolution that will save businesses considerable, time, money and man hours. I can see all my equipment eventually specifying the John Deere technology because there is nothing else out there that comes close to these advanced tools It is the technology of the future, but it’s happening now!”

One could argue that buying a new 130hp tractor to power all the work activities on a small organic

livestock farm, might be a little overkill, but for Steve Green, it’s proving to be the perfect solution. Steve, with the help of his wife Lydia farms, 380 acres on two sites based out of Studley, Warwickshire and keeps a suckler herd of 30 cattle plus a flock of 300 ewes. The farm used to be an arable operation, but slackened off during the mid 90’s and has been a fully certified organic livestock farm for the past 12 years.

“I’d been considering changing out my two old Case tractors from the nineteen-nineties,” commented Steve, “because they were getting long in the tooth, were old style technology and I was wanting to make my life and work a lot easier, so it was time for an upgrade. I hadn’t really considered a John Deere before, but the TAG sales guy, David Marshall, happened to drop in a calendar at Christmas. I hadn’t seen a rep from any dealer for years, and this is how it started.”

Steve later called into the TAG branch at Evesham and met David to discuss his needs and, “I asked a lot of questions and David was very attentive, treated me as if I was really important and I have to admit I was impressed. I was expecting this big dealer to be a little stuffy and just treat me like another number, but how I was wrong, they were really interested in my needs and have never failed me yet.”

Steve tried a couple of different makes of tractor, but decided on a new John Deere 6130R with loader. He chose the higher specification 50K Auto-Powr transmission, AutoTrac, SF1 Receiver and a luxury package which included a refrigerator and lots of niceties that helped him to make his work day more comfortable. “I’m getting of an age where my muscles

react negatively to too much manual work,” added Steve, “and I think I deserve a little more comfort. Also, this auto-steer and GPS technology does everything for me, saves an immediate ten per cent of costs, - particularly in the mowing season, purely because it is so much more efficient. Ten percent savings means I can release more time away from work and put it towards a holiday and personal relaxation!”

Typical work on Steve’s farm includes grassland management, harrowing, rolling, topping, mowing, haymaking and baling. “The Auto-Power transmission is so smooth,” enthused Steve, “better than the other brands I tried and it’s absolutely ideal on the round baler, keeping the speed and in-feed at the ideal pace for perfectly finished bales.”

He does a lot of roadwork between the two farm sites and so the 50K transmission helps make the trip faster and safer.

“The support I have received from Trevor and David at TAG, has made my introduction to this new technology so easy” added Steve, “I don’t know how I managed without it. It’s been a real eye-opener to what I can get for my investment and also the level of service that comes from the TAG people. I see this new tractor having the potential of lasting me a long, long time and holding its value - so it’s been a wise investment all-round.”
