The Winter for most of us in the Cotswolds although long, has been happilyuneventful on the weather front. Thank goodness we've not suffered with too muchflooding and heavy rain.

Spring has now sprung, the sun is out and the tempretures are hopefully set to rise.

Opportunities to create an entirely bespoke interior fromthe ground up are rare – especially in the countryside.So when Sims Hilditch designed the interior for thisnewly built Hertfordshire masterpiece, it was achance to exceed their client’s every wish.

A new kind ofTIMELESSA Sims Hilditch project

O ccupying a site that was formerly a1950s derelict house, this magnificentfive-bedroom family home is like a

phoenix risen from the ashes. The ownerspurchased the land in 2011 with planningpermission to build a new house having alreadybeen granted.Sims Hilditch were commissioned by the

owners to design an interior that was neither apastiche of a bygone era, nor too modern andhard-edged. The brief was to create acomfortable, elegant home that would beinstantly welcoming and timeless in its appeal.Starting from scratch meant that not a drop

of space was wasted. Originally the owners hadplanned a two-storey house with an attic floor,however, this would have restricted the ceilingheights throughout the property. Instead, thebold decision was taken to leave the first-floorceilings open to the roof, which in turn meant theground floor ceilings could be higher. A third levelwas built by digging down into the basement,which created space for a gym, pool and gamesroom.It is upon first entering the house that the

additional ceiling height makes the greatestimpact. The dramatic double-height entrance hallresonates with tranquillity while a beautiful

cantilevered Bath stone staircase with oakbalustrade, designed by Sims Hilditch, leads theeye upwards to a sparkling chandelier.The ground-floor was carefully planned to

create a convivial living space. A light and airyliving room leads into a large open-plan kitchen-dining area, which is perfect for hosting parties.The focal point of the kitchen is a vast islandpainted in a dark smoky grey, which visuallyanchors the space but is also a fantasticentertainment hub with an integrated hob andwine fridge. A double door opening offersglimpses through to the sitting room, where apale oak and smoky blue-grey colour scheme

stained oak cabinetry and a formal living room,which was given a luxurious scheme with asilver mirrored coffee table and sumptuoussofas upholstered in a mix of velvet and cotton.

Sims Hilditch carried the same mix ofcomfort and refined beauty through to therooms on the upper floor. The vaulted ceilingsin the master bedroom and en-suite bathroomcreate a feeling of relaxing spaciousness whichis complemented by a pared-back scheme. Asmart design solution transforms a low free-standing wall into a headboard with integratedstorage and lighting and also provides aboundary for the dressing area behind the bed.

With so many diverse spaces, Sims Hilditchcreated harmony throughout the interior with asophisticated blend of lighting, warm materialsand natural wood. The gracious detailing andmeticulous accents, as well as theincorporation of surprising colours and texturesstrike the perfect balance between traditionand modernity.
