COTHURNUS CONSTITUTION

2007-2008

Preamble

We, the members of Cothurnus, desire an exploration of theatre through adiversified selection of productions of the highest caliber, and to instill a desire for artistic

achievement and appreciation in all students.

Article I

Section 1: he name of the dramatic organi!ation in the State "niversit# of $e%

&or' at (eneseo shall be Cothurnus.Section ): he purpose of this organi!ation shall be to develop 'no%ledge of

dramatic art, s'ill in production, and to aid in the general cultural

development of the individual. Cothurnus %or's to perpetuate the

theatrical experience for the campus, the communit#, and the surroundingarea. o fulfill this purpose, at least three *+ -egetable S..".P.

 productions should be presented a #ear.Section +: A governing bod# of elected student officials shall be called the /xecutive

0oard. he# %ill oversee all annual Cothurnus events as prescribed in this

Constitution and as described in the Cothurnus 0ulletin.

Article II

Section 1: embership in Cothurnus shall be granted to an# student of the State"niversit# of $e% &or' at (eneseo.

Section ): Active membership shall be constituted b#:*a Attendance to at least fift# percent *234 of general meetings.*a1. Attendance at meeting must be confirmed b# signing in on the

designated sign in sheet at meetings. If for an# reason members are unable

to sign in at the meeting, members must contact the secretar# %ithin 56hours to confirm their attendance at the meeting.

*b /xtreme circumstances for unexpected absences can be discussed %ith

the /xecutive 0oard %ithin a timel# fashion.

*c 7ong term legitimate absences *e.g. class conflicts, %or' conflicts,other theater conflicts must be cleared in advance %ith the /xecutive

0oard to maintain active membership status.

*d -olunteering for a minimum of four hours per semester for specifiedtheatre related events and activities.

Section +: -oting privileges %ill onl# be extended to active members, as defined in

Section ). 8o%ever, the President can extend voting privileges to non9active members throughout the #ear, excluding votes for the election of

officers, -egetable S..".P. Committee members and amendments to the

constitution.

Section 5: In order to be eligible to run for a position on the /xecutive 0oard or the

-egetable S..".P. Committee, the interested part# must be an active

member of Cothurnus.Section 2: All theatre professors emplo#ed in the School f he Arts are granted

associate membership status.

Section : All members agree that an# involvement in a Cothurnus sponsored activit#is voluntar#. All members must affirm that Cothurnus;s executive board

advisor and the College itself are not liable for an# in<ur# that ma# incur

during an# organi!ation activit#.Section =: Cothurnus agrees not to discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, creed,

religion, age, national origin, disabilit#, marital status, status %ith regard

to public assistance, or sexual orientation.

Section 6: Cothurnus is a%are of its responsibilit# for incidents regarding ha!ing%hich result in the loss of College recognition and exclusion from the

campus. here %ill be no ha!ing involved in the recruitment or

maintenance process of membership.

Section >: embership ma# be revo'ed b# ? vote of officers and @ vote for thegeneral membership if actions are deemed inappropriate b# the Student

Code f Conduct, State and ederal la%s andBor the Cothurnusconstitution.

Article III

Section 1: (eneral meetings shall be held once a %ee' on rida#s at +:+3pm in the

0rodie Commons. eeting time is posted on the Cothurnus board outside

of the 0rodie Commons. At least half the officers and one member must be present to conduct business.

Section ): he /xecutive 0oard meetings %ill be held once a %ee' at a prearranged

date and time.Section +: he President ma# call special meetings resulting from business that needs

to be dealt %ith immediatel# at his or her discretion.

Article I-

Section 1: he officers of Cothurnus shall be President, -ice9President, reasurer,

Secretar#, and 8istorian, and shall be undergraduate students attendingS.".$.&. (eneseo.

Section ): *a he /xecutive 0oard shall read the Cothurnus constitution and

evaluate the relevanc# and accurac# and revise annuall# or as needed. *b he /xecutive 0oard shall appoint a %ebmaster from the Cothurnus

membership to maintain the Cothurnus %ebsite.

Section +: he duties of the President shall be:*a o preside over all meetings.

*b o be a liaison %ith other organi!ations inside and outside of 0rodie,

as %ell as %ith the standing committees %ithin Cothurnus.

*c o 'eep in close contact %ith the facult# advisor.

*d o represent and promote the organi!ation in public.

*e Collecting and presenting at each meeting all relevant theatre 9 related

opportunities and events.*f o call a special uorum on an# vote except the election of officers and

-egetable S..".P. members, and amendments to the constitution.

Section 5: he duties of the -ice9President shall be:*a o perform the duties of the President in his or her absence.

*b o hold the position of chair of the -egetable S..".P. committee and

 preside over all -egetable S..".P. meetings.*c o abide b# the Cothurnus Constitution and Cothurnus inancial

Polic# and guide the -egetable S..".P. season in accordance %ith the

-egetable S..".P. (uidelines.

*d o report to the /xecutive 0oard the progress and status of the-egetable S..".P Season.

*e o appoint members to the -egetable S..".P Committee in the event

that a general election is not possible, pending approval of the /xecutive

0oard.*f o be responsible to form a committee to plan and execute the D0lac'

0ox A%ardsE, in con<unction %ith the 0rodie (ala committee.Section 2: he duties of the reasurer shall be:

*a o 'no%, understand, abide b# and implement into the Cothurnus

treasur# all Cothurnus inancial Polic#. unds are deposited through the(eneseo oundation.

*b o assist the -egetable S..".P. Committee and student directors in

'eeping accurate records and a balanced budget.

*c o assist all Cothurnus subcommittees in the gaining of funds andgrants, etc. and to facilitate the financial aspect of securing %or'shops,

etc. for the members of Cothurnus.

*d o be responsible to coordinate %ith the facult# advisor planning tripsto the Stratford heater estival in Stratford, Canada.

*e o assist the facult# echnical Firector and Costume Fesigner in the

use of the funds, if an#, granted to them b# Cothurnus.*f unds shall be administered through the proper documentation %ith

approval of the reasurer.

Section : he duties of the Secretar# shall be:

*a o 'eep complete records of all proceedings of Cothurnus.*b o ta'e accurate minutes of all Cothurnus meetings and send them via

email to the Cothurnus list serve andBor post them on the Cothurnus

%ebsite.*c o ta'e accurate minutes of all executive board meetings.

*d o facilitate, via a sign in sheet, the ta'ing of attendance at Cothurnus

meetings, and to use this attendance record to determine activemembership.

*e o monitor all Cothurnus mailing list activities.

*f o send reminders and announcements to Cothurnus mailing list.

*g o facilitate the 0rodie (ala Committee.

Section =: he duties of the 8istorian shall be:

*a o collect, laminate, and displa# posters in the 0rodie Commons.*b o archive programs, production materials, media documents, video,

 photos, box office reports and other Cothurnus documents.

*c o ta'e, or to appoint someone to ta'e, photos of all-egetable S..".P productions.

*d o oversee the creation of D0rea' a 7egsE at executive board meetings

and to post them prior to the opening nights of an# 0rodie production.

*e o create and monitor the 0rodie Contact 0oard.*f o facilitate alumni relations.

*g o maintain the Cothurnus 0ulletin, %hich is a document that

describes in detail the operations and activities of Cothurnus, as created b#

the members of the /xecutive 0oard.Section 6: All /xecutive 0oard members refer to the Cothurnus 0ulletin, the

Cothurnus inancial Polic#, the -egetable S..".P (uidelines and an#un%ritten Cothurnus polic# or practice for further advisement and

description of duties and activities.

Section >: An officer ma# be removed from office b# a ? vote of officers plus @ votefrom the general membership if actions are deemed inappropriate b# the

Student Code f Conduct, State and ederal la%s andBor the Cothurnus

constitution.

Section 13: In the event of a vacanc#, the officers %ill hold an emergenc# electionusing the outlined procedures of elections.

Article -

Section 1: he President, -ice9President, reasurer, Secretar#, and 8istorian shall beelected b# the second to last meeting before the close of the spring

semester. Interest in officer positions should be expressed earl# in the

spring semester.

Section ): All elections shall be nominated from the floor and shall be closed at theend of the meeting in %hich nominations occur b# current active members.

An individual ma# onl# run for one /xecutive 0oard position. An

individual ma# run for a position on the /xecutive 0oard A$F a memberof the -egetable S..".P Committee, %ith the exception of -ice

Presidential candidates. An# individual nominated for multiple conflicting

 positions has fort#9eight *56 hours from the close of nominations to selecta position to run for. /lectronic speeches must be e9mailed to the secretar#

sevent#9t%o *=) hours after nominations close. At the meeting follo%ing

nominations, a brief uestion and ans%er session %ill ta'e place, %ith

uestions being submitted in advance, screened, and read anon#mousl# b#

the President or a prox# of the President.

Section +: A simple pluralit# of all active members present must be obtained forelection of members to the /xecutive 0oard and -egetable S..".P.

Committee.

Section 5: A simple ma<orit# vote of all active members present at a membershipmeeting must be obtained in order to pass an# constitutional amendments.

Section 2: 0efore a constitutional amendment can be presented before the active

membership for ratification, changes must be unanimousl# approved b#the /xecutive 0oard.

Section : "nanimous approval of the current executive board %ill be necessar# to

ratif# a ne% constitution. "pdated constitutions must be submitted to the

Coordinator of Student rgani!ations immediatel#.Section : he advisor %ill oversee all impeachment proceedings follo%ing the

guidelines from the Article I- Section >.

Article -I

Section 1: A facult# representative %ill be chosen b# the /xecutive 0oard fromactive Cothurnus members that are ma<ors in the department to go to all

facult# meetings and then report bac' to Cothurnus after each facult#

meeting.Section ): A facult# advisor %ill be appointed b# a @ ma<orit# of the current active

members. Gualifications for advisor include:

*a heatre professor in the School of the Arts

*b Invested interest in the success of the clubSection +: he advisor has no voting rights but has veto po%er for events or activities

that directl# violate College polic#

Section 5: In the event of a need for a ne% advisor, the above voting process %ill beused to select a ne% advisor.

Article -II

Section 1: A committee of Cothurnus shall be formed %ith the intent of increasing

the chances of all %ho are interested in directing, acting, producing,

designing, and %or'ing on a full9fledged production %ithin a set budget,organi!ed entirel# b# students.

Section ): he committee shall be called -egetable S..".P. *Student rgani!ed

"ndergraduate Productions.Section +: -egetable S..".P. shall be given a share of the Cothurnus budget %or'ed

out b# the Cothurnus reasurer and the -egetable S..".P Chairperson,

%ith approval of the /xecutive 0oard.Section 5: -egetable S..".P.;s sole authorit# %ill be the allocation of funds for and

the administration of student productions.

Section 2: -egetable S..".P. %ill have at least three *+ slots to be included in the

departmental season.

Section : -egetable S..".P. %ill consist of five student members:

*a our elected b# Cothurnus.

*b ne %ill be the current -ice President.*c All members shall serve until the# are no longer students at this

institution or until the# no longer fulfill their responsibilities as -egetable

S..".P. members, except for the -ice9President of Cothurnus, %hoseterm %ill end %hen his or her term as an executive officer of Cothurnus

ends.

*d In the event that a Committee member is elected to the -icePresidenc#, he or she can no longer serve as a member. 8o%ever, at the

end of their term as the -ice President, the# ma#, if the# %ish, become a

voting Committee member again %ithout see'ing re9election to the

Committee.Section =: he /xecutive 0oard has the authorit# to impeach b# ma<orit# vote an#

member of the -egetable S..".P Committee %ho fails to fulfill the duties

of his or her position, as prescribed in the -egetable S..".P (uidelines

and as advised b# the -egetable S..".P Chairperson. Prior to theimpeachment vote reaching the /xecutive 0oard, a ma<orit# vote amongst

the Committee members must pass as %ell.Section 6: All members %ill be elected in accordance %ith election policies as

established in Article -.

Section >: he -egetable S..".P. committee shall 'eep accurate records of all itsactivities.

Section 13: he -egetable S..".P. committee %ill be governed in accordance %ith

their (uidelines, Cothurnus inancial Polic# and the Cothurnus

Constitution.

Article IH

Section 1: Cothurnus agrees to uphold in the conduct of its affairs all regulations of

the College and the State "niversit# of $e% &or'.

Section ): In an# matter not explicitl# covered b# this Constitution, the /xecutive0oard reserves the right to ma'e decisions regarding Cothurnus and

-egetable S..".P polic# and procedure.
