Cosmetology
Cosmetology students earn 1,500 hours of training which qualifies them to take the Maryland State Cosmetology Examination.
Program Skills & Certifications:
• Life skills, communication skills, and presentation of a professional image
• Sciences which deal with bacteriology, infection control, anatomy and physiology, as well as chemistry and electricity
• Hair properties, hair design, shampooing, haircutting, hair styling, braiding and extensions, wigs and hair enhancements, chemical texture services, and hair coloring
• Histology of the skin, hair removal, facials, and facial makeup
• Nail structure and growth, manicuring and pedicuring, and advanced nail techniques, artificial nail application and nail art
• Salon business skills as well as seeking employment and on-the-job skills
• State board preparation—a minimum of 1,500 hours are required
• Earn 350 hours in the senior year through the work-study program in a licensed salon, under the supervision of a licensed senior cosmetologist
• The purchase of a kit containing all equipment, books, and a uniform is required in the 9th grade program. These items will be used to complete the students education as well as sit for the state exam
• Seniors must complete 350 hours in a licensed salon under the supervision of a licensed senior cosmetologist to complete the course requirements and take the state exam.
• Students sit for the exam at the completion of the 1,500 hour program and become licensed in their senior year
• The State of Maryland is now under the international board which allows the licensed cosmetologist to practice in any state by transferring their license
• Lecture, demonstration, and continual practice is used throughout the students’ training
Internships:
Work-study in a licensed salon, under the supervision of a licensed senior cosmetologist for the last 350 hours during 12th grade.
