What are corrosion resistant reinforcing steels?

VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications: Copied Note

SECTION 223 STEEL REINFORCEMENT is amended to add the following:

e) Corrosion Resistant Reinforcement shall conform to the requirements of one of the following standards:

● ASTM A1035/A1035M – 05 Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain, Low-carbon, Chromium, Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement.

● ASTM A955/A955M - 06a Standard and Specification for Deformed and Plain Stainless Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement.

UNS Designations: S24100, S30400, S31603, S31653, S32101, S32201, S32205

● AASHTO Designation: MP 13M/MP 13-04, Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Clad Deformed and Plain Round Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement.

VDOT Road and Bridge Specs. Copied Note

Section 406.04 Measurement and Payment is amended to add the following:

Corrosion resistant reinforcing steel will be measured and paid for in pounds of steel placed in the structure as shown on the plans. This price shall include fabricating, shipping, furnishing and placing corrosion resistant reinforcing steel in the structure as indicated on the plans.

Payment will be made under:

Pay Item Pay Unit

When will VDOT start using corrosion resistant reinforcing steel ?

The plan:12 projects in 2008

24 projects in 2009

Full implementation in January 2010

5

Which projects?

The project will have the copied note included.

The GENERAL NOTE on the title sheet (front sheet) of bridge plans will have a note stating that the reinforcing steel is to be corrosion resistant reinforcing steel and that the rebars are to be deformed bars.

The GENERAL NOTE may also indicate a limit on the yield strength of the rebar.

6

Which bar will be supplied?

Unless otherwise specified in the GENERAL NOTE on the title sheet (front sheet), the Contractor may supply any of the three types of bars noted in the copied note:

MMFX-2

Stainless clad

7

Restrictions or substitutions?

Unless specified otherwise, the substitution of epoxy coated rebars will not be allowed for the corrosion resistant reinforcing steel bars.

8

Where are these bars used in a bridge project?

CRR bars will replace epoxy-coated bars and galvanized bars in:

---- bridge decks

--- neatwork of abutments

--- pier caps under joints

--- stirrups of prestressed concrete beams

Storage

--- Keep free from oil, dirt and mud

--- Should not be stored directly on the ground.

--- Deleterious materials should be removed

from the bars before placing concrete

Page 19: Corrosion Resistant Reinforcing Steels

19

Cutting Bars

--- Cut by shearing

--- Cut with a fluid cooled saw

--- Torch cutting is never permitted.

Page 20: Corrosion Resistant Reinforcing Steels

20

Bending Bars

-- Cold bend

-- Prescribed min. diameter pin

-- No bending or straightening that will damage material.

-- Heating material to bend is never allowed.

Welding

Welding of CRR bars is

not permitted !

Surface Rust

Surface rust of mill scale for MMFX-2 bars should not be cause for rejection.
