ProjECt ManaGEMEnt

Corporate Education Group®

ProjECt ManaGEMEnt CoMPEtEnCY ModEL determine the skills your organization needs to improve project success rates and plan your training and development initiatives accordingly. With our Project Management Competency Model, we’ll outline the three major areas that make up your project managers’ competencies and that are necessary for project success:

technical—project management skills and knowledge that make up the nine Knowledge Areas identified by the Project Management Institute®’s (PMI®’s) A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge® (PMBOK® Guide).

Personal—characteristics that underlie a person’s ability to successfully manage a project.

Business and Leadership—critical skills that enable project managers to link any given project to the relationships, resources, and infrastructure of their organization.

These three categories combine the art and science of project management—“technical” capabilities focus on the science of project management, and the “personal” and “business and leadership” categories focus on the art of project management. Organizations that combine the art and science of project management into a best-practices process can significantly improve their project success rates.

Once we have identified the technical, personal, and business and leadership competencies needed for a successful project management practice throughout your organization, you can then use our Project Management Online Assessment to measure these competencies in your potential and current project managers.

No matter which areas your employees are lacking (including leadership and management communications skills, which are often overlooked by other project management training providers), the Corporate Education Group can develop a customized, comprehensive training solution that will fill any skill gaps that your organization may have.

facilitation Skills for Project ManagersCourse id: MDP 455 / duration: 1 Day / Credits: 0.7 CEUs

a successfully facilitated meeting helps to achieve and exceed the project goals. It can surface the knowledge of the group, the dynamics within a group, improve decision making, overall quality, and team cohesiveness – and be enjoyable, too! Facilitation is an art and a science that consists of a set of skills that can be learned. Successful facilitators can recognize and balance the needs of the meeting, the individuals, and the team. This workshop addresses the more difficult challenges faced by project managers in meetings and does it in a fun and interactive way. In this workshop, challenging behaviors of individuals and groups are associated with various animal categories. We’ve all been in meetings with the “wise old owl” who philosophizes at great length. And we all know what it feels like when there is an “elephant in the room.” The images may be simple to grasp, but this is not a basic meeting management workshop!

What you Will learn» The role of the meeting facilitator» Three success factors of meetings» Skills required for facilitation» To identify the challenging meeting behaviors of individuals and groups» To apply what you have learned using real situations

Providing Constructive feedbackCourse id: MDI 855 / duration: 1 Day / Credits: 0.7 CEUs

increase your effectiveness as a communicator. All too often, we are given feedback by a key player or senior manager at work and we leave the conversation thinking we understand their intended message. 80% of the time however, the most important thing they really wanted us to hear, we missed. Why does this happen? Is it our ability to receive feedback? Is some feedback harder to hear than others? Or, is it the communicator’s inability to properly articulate what they really mean?

Being able to give and receive feedback is one of the most effective tools in providing behavior changes and in providing direction for personal and professional development. Most of us could use a fine tuning in the art and skill of giving and receiving effective feedback. Minimally, it will make our lives easier, and it has the potential to move our teams and our organizations forward faster with fewer performance issues.

Effective Problem Solving and decision Making: a Creative and Collaborative ProcessCourse id: MDP 1012 / duration: 1 Day / Credits: 0.7 CEUs

overcome perceptions, assumptions, and conflicts to develop creative solutions. Much of what leaders and managers do is solve problems and make decisions. In a growing and fast-paced business environment there can be pressure on leaders to solve problems and make decisions quickly and unilaterally. Often, the result neither saves time nor creates the most effective decision. In this one-day program, we will use a three-step model for problem solving and decision making to create a defined process in a collaborative manner.

Problem resolution is a ”three-step” process. Step one explores the boundaries of the problem and defines it; step two examines potential solutions and establishes criteria for the logical selection of a solution. Step three evaluates solutions on the criteria to identify the solution most consistent with the desired outcome or objectives. This program will use this "three-step" approach to not only define a reasoned process, but to also deal with the emotional impact, brought on by the human element.

What you Will learn

» How to define the nature of the problems» How to separate givens from perceptions and assumptions» The nature and causes of conflicts during a problem-solving session» How to maximize the use of brainstorming and creative thinking» How to manage the emotions that often develop around conflict» How to focus on proven methods for using the positive aspects of

Manufacturing/Processing Plant improves Project Management with training from Boston university Corporate Education Center

Westinghouse Electric Company’s Western Zirconium Plant wanted to improve its ability to meet project goals, reduce costs, and improve customer satisfaction, but found that the knowledge of project management of its engineering employees varied greatly. With mounting pressure to complete more projects, the team required training in best practices for project management. The company partnered with Boston University Corporate Education Center to implement a comprehensive project management training program designed specifically to help the engineers standardize project management as the means to achieve rigorous business goals. After 24 days of training, over the course of a year, comprehensive project management is helping the company:

• Reduce the high cost of rework

• Lessen downtime

• Maintain its high caliber of customer service.

technical Manufacturing Process requiresadvanced Project Management Skills Westinghouse Electric Company provides fuel, services, technology, plant design, and equipment to utility and industrial customers in the worldwide commercial nuclear electric power industry. The Western Zirconium Plant in Ogden, Utah, processes zirconium to make parts for power plants. The plant extracts zirconium from zircon sand and converts it to high-quality metal alloyed with iron, nickel, and chrome to withstand the extreme environments of power plants. These zirconium ingots are transferred to sister plants where they are formed into the components for the power plants—the tubing, plugs, and grids that hold the uranium fuel.

Because the zirconium is used in power plants, there is a great need for precision and quality in all manufacturing processes. The 400 plant employees provide products and services that fully satisfy customer, industry, and regulatory requirements. All customer projects—from order entry through design, manufacturing, and servicing—are managed

in accordance with high-quality management standards. To meet these standards, it is essential that project scope is accurate, adequate resources are allocated, and customer deliverables meet the project goals. There is no room at Westinghouse for scope creep, cost overruns, missed deadlines, understaffed projects, or misalignment of resources.

“With tighter budgets, demanding time constraints, and fewer resources, more of our staff needed to be trained in industry-standard project management methods,” explained Rick Propst, manager of engineering projects and technology. “There is increasing pressure to complete more and more projects, so it becomes even more critical to do precise project and resource planning to meet our goals.”

The highly-experienced engineering staff has extensive technical education, yet little formal training in project management. Propst was convinced that even an MBA degree was inadequate preparation for expert project management. In today’s fast-paced business environment, it takes skilled individuals to successfully plan and execute projects in the workplace, and insightful strategies to get the job done quickly and with minimal resources.

Westinghouse Electric adopts Boston university Corporate Education Center Project Management trainingWhile developing plans to institute project management training, Propst learned that another Westinghouse Electric division, Nuclear Services, was also implementing project management training to help its staff gain important business skills and was establishing required levels of project management competencies for employees. As the process unfolded, it was decided that all of the Westinghouse Electric business units would adopt the same project management competency requirements for employees, who will have to complete a core curriculum of standardized training in order to manage future projects. Propst’s first initiative was to ensure that all engineers in his plant were trained in project management to meet these developing requirements.

That’s when he turned to Boston University Corporate Education Center, which was already engaged with other Westinghouse Electric business units for project management training. The Boston University Corporate Education Center project management program provides a comprehensive, standardized, educational program that offers real-life project management methods and techniques to position individuals as leaders and provide companies with a competitive advantage.

The Western Zirconium Plant executive team wanted to select a training partner that was closely aligned with the Project Management

Institute’s (PMI®) professional standards. Other options included local universities, but Propst felt strongly that because Boston University Corporate Education Center is greatly respected in the training industry and offers professional training designed around the PMI standards, it was the best choice. Boston University Corporate Education Center is a charter member of the PMI global corporate council and a charter Global Registered Education Provider through PMI. Their project management curriculum is compliant with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), a collection of best management practices for project management. In addition to preparing project managers for certifi cations including Project Management Professional (PMP®) and Certifi ed Associate in Project Management (CAPM®), Boston University Corporate Education Center offers a wide variety of project management courses and certifi cate programs, and its curriculum can be customized to meet the specifi c development needs of customers.

In addition to the high level of industry recognition, Boston University Corporate Education Center’s courses satisfy the core curriculum requirements adopted by Westinghouse Electric. Earlier, a few of the Western Zirconium Plant employees took some project management courses, but it was not the comprehensive training program that offered the skills and knowledge that the Boston University Corporate Education Center courses provide.

Boston university Corporate Education Center training advances individual Skills and Corporate GoalsAs Boston University Corporate Education Center and the Western Zirconium Plant planned the training program, they focused on individual skill development to enable comprehensive project management planning and consistent management of projects. The program was customized to concentrate on standardizing both the language and the approach to projects, capturing and implementing best practices in project management, improving consistency in project delivery, and providing better management of the project portfolio. The project management program included select modules to cover essential knowledge areas and incorporated several days of coaching by Boston University Corporate Education Center experts to support application of the content covered in the program, including mentoring, process documentation review, and facilitated project support.

The project management training program included eleven courses, with 24 days of training conducted over the course of ten months, and participants who successfully completed the requirements received certifi cates from Boston University Corporate Education Center. Initially, many of the engineers were nervous about being in a learning environment after having been out of school for so many years, but as soon as the courses started, they wanted to immediately apply their new skills. After the program was completed, they formed study groups to prepare for the PMI certifi cation exam because they recognized that PMP certifi cation adds valuable credentials for career advancement. In addition, as the training progressed, they instituted peer checks so that

there was a team approach to all project management planning activities.

The attendees reported that all of Boston University Corporate Education Center’s instructors were exceptional, with a high level of hands-on industry expertise, instructional techniques, and outstanding instruction of PMBOK methods. The courses had high levels of individual participation and discussion, and exceeded company expectations.

While their new competencies allow the trained individuals to better meet their current responsibilities and to advance their careers, the Western Zirconium Plant also has realized signifi cant benefi ts from the education program. There is improved teamwork, especially for those who didn’t have much team experience before. And, the use of tools and project management has become uniform across the division.

Although it is still early in the process, there are recent improvements in project scope statements, and some individuals are circling back to bring their new skills to projects already underway to try to improve the outcomes. Propst feels that achieving the long-term goals of improved productivity, decreased time to complete projects, increased customer satisfaction and sales, and lower costs are just over the horizon. This initial project management training program is just the beginning of important education goals that the plant team means to accomplish. Boston University Corporate Education Center is the fi rst resource Propst intends to enlist to help, and to support the group as it advances its project management skills to meet the needs of its business unit.

uPS delivers innovative Project Management training (and Six Million Packages a day!)

UPS, the largest package delivery company in the world, relies on successful project management to drive innovation, contribute to growth, and ensure customer satisfaction. When the “Go Brown” company wanted to develop a world-class project management training program, Boston University Corporate Education Center, a part of Corporate Education Group, helped it develop and deliver a new education approach to train individuals working on key strategic projects.

Messenger Company Becomes Global trade Expert Whether flying basketball shoes from Shanghai to Los Angeles, transporting essential business documents between London and Paris, or picking up and repairing broken laptop computers, UPS is the world’s largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain and freight services. Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, and traded on the New York, NY Stock Exchange (UPS), UPS helps synchronize the movement of goods, information, and funds for nearly eight million customers in more than 200 countries.

UPS has grown from a small messenger company into a global trade expert providing air, ocean, ground, and electronic services. Founded in 1907, today UPS is a $49.7 billion corporation, recognized by its ever-present brown uniforms, delivery trucks, and UPS stores in shopping centers across America. Its 3000 worldwide facilities are linked to Worldport, its main transport hub in Louisville, KY, where more than a million packages arrive and depart in just a few hours on a busy night. UPS’ 425,000 employees handle an average of nearly 6 million packages each day, more than twice what its nearest competitor processes.

In addition to package delivery services, UPS offers a host of other capabilities. Over the past two decades, UPS has aggressively built a massive international transportation network, connected by one of the largest technological infrastructures in commercial history. In the process, it has dramatically expanded its portfolio of services into logistics and supply chain offerings. For example, UPS sells its innovative route-mapping software to companies with truck fleets. Also, UPS Capital was established in 1998, the first financial services company to focus solely on financing supply chain solutions. And, the company maintains more than 1,000 distribution centers around the globe to provide customers with inventory and order management services, some housing technical diagnostics and repair, critical parts depots, simple subassembly and returns management services.

Project Management Skills drive Company innovation The development of these critical services and innovations are a result of the company’s success in skillfully managing projects to develop new ideas, processes, tools, and IT systems that have created the foundation for increased revenue, satisfied customers, and efficient resource management.

UPS relies on the success of project management to keep the company at the head of its markets. For example, the company cut 28 million miles from truck routes, saving roughly three million gallons of fuel. This was accomplished largely by mapping delivery routes that minimized left turns. Also, UPS started a self-service system to allow customers to redirect packages already en route. And, automated vehicle loading instructions have shortened delivery routes by making sure trucks are packed in the most efficient manner, so drivers can deliver faster and minimize retracing of steps or missed stops.

All of these initiatives for cost savings or improved service began with a project under management by a UPS employee. Recognizing that more advances would be possible with a world-class learning and development program reinforcing UPS requirements, the company sought a fresh approach to project management training.

“We wanted to change our project management training program to help people who work on key strategic projects that have the greatest impact on the organization,” explained Maureen Stefanini, UPS Program Management, Learning & Development Manager.

Before, UPS offered classroom training through three or four day classes to a very broad audience across the company. The complete training program took nearly four years to complete and was not specific to UPS.

uPS Seeks Education PartnerThe UPS Project Management Group (PMG) developed very specific goals for a new project management training program, including:

• Blended learning (instructor-led and online training)

• New criteria to select candidates working on essential company projects

• A more rigorous, challenging program

• More training hours

• UPS-specific project management practices, tools, and examples

• Accountability for participation in the classroom

• Evaluation tools for before, during, and after the program

• Measurement criteria of the training program’s impact on the company’s million dollar projects

Through a Request for Information and Request for Proposal, PMG looked for an education partner to help them design and deliver a program to meet their criteria. After a comprehensive evaluation, UPS chose Boston University Corporate Education Center (BUCEC), a part of the Corporate Education Group, to help it deliver this special program. UPS knew that the organization had an outstanding reputation for its expertise in corporate education programs, especially in project management training.

Boston University Corporate Education Center is a charter member of the Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) Global Corporate Council, and a charter Global Registered Education Provider through PMI®, and their project management curriculum is compliant with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), a collection of best management practices for project management. In addition to preparing project managers for certifications including Project Management Professional (PMP®) and Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®), Boston University Corporate Education Center offers a wide variety of project management courses and certificate programs, and its curriculum can be customized to meet the specific development needs of customers.

The high quality of instruction and course materials was a significant factor in UPS’ selection of Boston University Corporate Education Center, whose instructors are known for their skill in incorporating their direct industry experience into project management courses for business managers in Fortune 500 companies.

Another reason for partnering with Boston University Corporate Education Center was their experience and flexibility in tailoring training programs specifically for the needs of different companies, and aligning certificate programs and courses with companies’ existing needs and methodologies.

uPS and Boston university Corporate Education Center develop Blended training ProgramThe PMG identified the need for its trainees to acquire most of the PMI® knowledge areas, and be able to incorporate it with how UPS already conducted projects. The PMG identified existing tools and UPS case studies as an important component of the program, and worked with Boston University Corporate Education Center to customize the project management curriculum to incorporate those necessary elements and establish a certification process for students.

The PMG set up a process where students begin with a pre-program skills assessment questionnaire that becomes the baseline of skill level and proficiency. Then PMG meets with each participant to discuss the baseline assessment and select a current project that will be used during the training program for further evaluation.

assessment, online training, and team Workshop Lead to Certification Program participants first complete the Boston University Corporate Education Center online pre-course “Project Framework & Integration Management” before attending instructor-led classes. This pre-course allows all students to gain the same essential foundation in project management concepts and terms to prepare for interactive classroom sessions. In addition, the online learning minimizes travel requirements and provides students with schedule flexibility.

The classroom sessions, in Roswell, Georgia, and Mahwah, New Jersey, use an interactive case approach where student teams plan real UPS projects. During these learning sessions, students must work with resource constraints, conflicting priorities, and other challenges to better prepare them for work in their jobs. Through this ten-day program, participants are able to share best practices and gain new skills.

Three to four months following the workshop, attendees complete a post-course skills assessment and project audit to compare with the baseline measurement, evaluate how they are using the skills, and whether their projects have been positively affected with tangible results. Six to nine months after the training class, PMG will meet with each student and his/her manager to review the training and assessments. The final step of the program will be Certificate in Applied Project Management from Boston University Corporate Education Center and UPS.

Project Management training Will aid uPS Success In the first year of the program, 48 individuals were trained in sessions in May and September. The trainees were project managers in business, IT, finance and administration, customer solutions, and other departments who handle large projects (over a million dollars) that are aligned to UPS’ critical initiatives. The training program received very high marks on course content and materials, instructors, and the entire experience, from participants; most said that the workshop either met or exceeded all expectations.

UPS managers have reported improved teamwork and project planning, as well as better work quality and productivity, following the training program. Over the long-term, program results will be measured through a Program and Project Management Effectiveness report.

Private Student Loan Business Streamlines Product Management Process with Boston university Corporate Education Center’s Business analysis training

With increasing pressure to move products to market faster, one corporation wanted to streamline its product management process to ensure that programs were clearly defined at the outset, and met stringent schedule and cost guidelines. The company asked Boston University Corporate Education Center to help key employees in this process gain new skills to effectively define project goals and manage teams to complete projects on time and within budget. Through the Boston University Corporate Education Center Business Analysis Certificate Program, they have met their goals to improve the process, increase collaboration, and deliver products to customers in an efficient and consistent manner.

Private Student Loan Business Grows with Baby Boomlet This organization meets the growing demand for private education loans by providing financial and educational institutions, as well as businesses and other enterprises, with custom private education loan products.

With 1,000 employees, they facilitate $2.6 billion annually in loan disbursements that fund students at more than 5,000 schools from private K-12 institutions through undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs. The firm’s financial institution clients include 15 of the 20 largest federally-guaranteed student loan originators.

Market Growth drives new Methods Because of a rapidly changing market and their need to continually deliver new products to customers, they needed to improve the delivery of projects on time, within budget, and to scope, so that new offerings could be prepared faster, thereby increasing their competitive standing. Through it all, the company wanted to foster effective communications and team collaboration between distinct groups.

“We determined that providing employees with tools and knowledge to help them standardize project requirements development and product management approaches across the organization was essential,” explained the Senior Vice President of the Office of the

Chairman. “Clearly defining the business requirements of products and gaining consensus early in the process would ensure that all products could meet established goals.”

They wanted to focus training efforts on this process, so that all business and systems analysts would be adept at gaining agreement on requirements among project stakeholders early in the project lifecycle and applying standardized requirements management methodology to the process. This would help clarify roles, strengthen teams, and incorporate best practices.

“Furnishing our business consultants and business systems analysts with vital skills to help manage projects would help the organization meet corporate goals, and propagate important knowledge to team members and stakeholders,” noted the Vice President of IT Administration.

The company wanted to institute a formal training program, from a recognized leader in corporate education, to help employees gain the skills to standardize requirements gathering and scope management on projects, and to further the professional development of employees.

Boston university Corporate Education Center Provides high Quality Solutions They selected Boston University Corporate Education Center because of its expertise in corporate education, a strong reputation for excellence, the high quality of instruction, and the value that its programs provide to enterprises and individuals. The Boston University Corporate Education Center offers comprehensive business analysis, technology, project management, business process management and leadership training, and certificate programs to improve corporate business operations and accelerate individual career advancement.

Because the focus was on product requirements development, they chose Boston University Corporate Education Center’s Business Analysis Certificate Program, which is offered both to corporations for their employees and to individuals who wish to pursue new career goals. This program is well known and highly respected; Boston University Corporate Education Center is a Charter Endorsed Education Provider of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA™), an independent not-for-profit professional association serving the growing field of business analysis.

Business analysis training helps individuals Gain Critical Skills The Business Analysis Certificate Program provided their employees with hands-on business analyst experience, working with the latest techniques and tools such as UML and Use Cases. The training was structured to encompass seven courses, each conducted for two days on site at their offices. Review sessions included mentoring and coaching to prepare individuals for the next class.

Through this series of classes that ran over the course of 10 months, 20 business consultants and business systems analysts were trained. They acquired skills and knowledge through scenario-based training and learned to perform the business analyst role on projects in their workplace. The program was taught by knowledgeable industry practitioners from the Boston University Corporate Education Center, whose real-world experience facilitated efficient skills transfer to participants.

training Benefits: individuals and Company The Business Analysis Certificate Program has helped both employees and the organization, and enabled the organization to accomplish important organizational and process changes.

The individuals who participated in the program learned techniques to define business requirements, an essential step for successful projects. They were able to apply these new skills immediately, and there are observable improvements in the quality of work, with more complete requirements outlined for products. These employees are now regarded as credible knowledge resources within the organization, giving them an increasingly important professional role within the company; in addition, the Business Analysis Certificate will greatly assist them throughout their careers.

Because of the value of the Business Analyst training, the company has engaged Boston University Corporate Education Center to train additional employees on the process of use-case modeling now being employed. As a result, projects are more consistent in requirements development, with team members using the same language. This, along with an easier review process, has significantly improved product delivery schedules.

“Having 20 people trained in business analyst processes has improved the effectiveness of communications within and across functional groups, especially with key business leaders and stakeholders,” summarized the Senior Vice President of the Office of the Chairman.

Because of the group training for business and IT employees, there is now a strong team approach within the company; and, with the business

analysts helping other team participants understand industry best practices, projects operate more quickly and easily. The company has been able to clarify roles, increase communication among groups, and build collaboration. The change has increased company efficiency, and projects have appropriate goals established at the outset and strict adherence to schedules and budgets.

Collaborative Consulting knew that having more project managers obtain PMP® Certification would be crucial to obtaining future business because more customers were asking for certified project managers. The company determined that a complete training program would help employees obtain certification and learn other critical professional development skills. After a multi-provider search, Collaborative Consulting selected Boston University Corporate Education Center for its broad range of programs and expertise in project management and other critical (“soft”) skills necessary to meet corporate training initiatives. The initial training courses boosted Collaborative’s PMP® Certification rate to more than 50 percent.

Consulting firm aligns Business with technology Collaborative Consulting is one of the country’s most dynamic professional services firms. It provides companies in several industries — consumer products, retail, financial services, healthcare and pharmaceutical — with expert counsel and proven methods to improve business processes and the bottom line. This Boston-based firm specializes in optimizing the business and technology capabilities of its clients, leading to high levels of customer satisfaction, market share growth, and increased profitability.

One unique capability that distinguishes Collaborative Consulting from other consulting firms is the special know-how it lends to clients in professional project management. In addition to having certified project managers within the consulting company to manage its own projects, these highly skilled individuals work with Collaborative Consulting clients, helping them improve their own project management capabilities. Many of Collaborative Consulting’s 250 employees serve as project managers for clients, facilitating on-time, on-budget completion of successful programs for these customers. Others mentor client project managers, helping them with their own development and achievements, and providing the client company with a stronger project management foundation. Still others facilitate the establishment and operation of project management offices within client companies, setting a new standard for project management at the client.

“Our own projects are accomplished with efficiency and ease,” explained Steve Salisbury, Director and Practice Area Leader, Project Management, for Collaborative Consulting. “We want to make sure our clients’ programs run

smoothly; and we want to continually improve project management processes, both here and for our customers.”

need for More Certified Project Managers Collaborative Consulting recognized the business value of having more of its project managers certified as Project Management Professionals (PMP®s) by the Project Management Institute (PMI®). More than a quarter million individuals have obtained this internationally recognized professional credential that is considered essential for business results.

“Our clients began requesting project managers who were PMP® certified, and we foresaw a time when this would be a mandatory requirement,” explained Salisbury. “At the time, only about a third of our project managers were PMP® certified and we didn’t want to be competing in the marketplace at a disadvantage.”

Collaborative Consulting set out to develop an education program to help its project managers gain this very valuable training and improve the firm’s ability to land new business. At the same time, the company wanted to help its already certified staff with the means to obtain additional professional development units (PDUs) in order to maintain their certification. Finally, Collaborative wanted an education program that would also address skills like leadership, communications, management, and facilitation, to add to the knowledge of its staff.

Before developing a training program, there was no corporate option offered to employees; staff members took online or public classroom courses from a variety of sources. The company wanted to change this approach, by working with a single provider for all of its training needs to ensure consistency for employees and to provide a growth path for less experienced staff.

Because the range of experience for Collaborative Consulting project managers ranged from five to twenty five or more years, the staff required different levels of training. They needed a program that could work for all stages of development and knowledge; in addition, they wanted to be able to teach their newest project managers how to be effective leaders and managers, and help them move up in their careers. For the more experienced staff, it was important to provide them with opportunities to hone their skills in a more formal setting and increase their exposure to best practices.

training Partners With Quality Programs Sought With a clear vision for the type of program it wanted, Collaborative Consulting set out to identify a training partner. From individuals at the company who had previously taken project management classes at Boston University

Corporate Education Center, the firm knew of the high quality of the courses and instructors. Collaborative Consulting undertook an evaluation of multiple providers to identify the best fit with its needs.

One concern Collaborative Consulting developed through this review process was about the emphasis that many training companies put on pass rates for the certification test, seemingly at the expense of actually teaching new skills. And, many of them could only offer PMP® certification courses, not the broader range of training that Collaborative Consulting sought. In contrast, the capabilities of Boston University Corporate Education Center stood out as more encompassing, according to Salisbury, through its broader business education in addition to project management preparation.

In the end, Collaborative Consulting selected Boston University Corporate Education Center for its diverse training programs, strong project management curriculum and programs, consistency and reputation as a long-term, reliable provider of high quality corporate training programs, and a flexible approach to customer needs. During the evaluation period, the Collaborative Consulting staff learned first-hand from one of its own customers — a large financial services company in Boston — about its successful partnership with Boston University Corporate Education Center.

Boston university Corporate Education Center delivers Custom Programs “This single provider approach with a highly respected, very capable training partner offers more to us and our employees than other alternatives and other providers,” noted Salisbury.

For the PMP® certification preparation, Collaborative Consulting and Boston University Corporate Education Center worked together to plan two training classes. Each person took a benchmark exam before the courses were developed, to demonstrate the specific knowledge needs. The approach to the curriculum was then customized to focus on what was most important, and the classes were split for people with different levels of knowledge.

In addition to this customization, Boston University Corporate Education Center offered the courses over two weeks, in a three-day session and a two-day session, with classes held on Saturdays. The weekend schedule made it easier for project managers who were currently engaged in client projects to maintain their workflow and not disrupt client activities for an extended time.

Through the PMP® preparation courses, individual students gained an understanding of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide®) that is applied universally, and awareness of the common terms and language that facilitates communication within the firm and with clients.

Course evaluations showed just how much the students gained from the courses. The instructors were credited with being very helpful to students and extremely credible because of the real-world experience that they brought to the classroom.

With four other practice areas beyond project management, Collaborative Consulting has already initiated business analysis training with Boston University Corporate Education Center, and has started to deliver a quarterly program of courses focusing on soft skills, beginning with communications.

Collaborative Consulting Meets Goals for PMP® Certification The training has boosted the certification level for project managers at Collaborative Consulting from just about 30 percent to more than 50 percent and the company plans to reach 75 percent soon. This is helping the company respond to potential customers who use PMP® certification as one of their decision criteria for selecting a consulting partner. With this improved ability to qualify for new business, they are positioned to more easily achieve revenue goals.

In addition, the soft skills training is helping to differentiate the Collaborative Consulting staff as well-rounded individuals who can sell business to a client, then lead the project.

Finally, this training program is helping Collaborative Consulting recruit and retain talented individuals. By investing in their training and professional development, the firm is strengthening connections and building relationships to keep skilled employees long term.

“We have definitely received good value from Boston University Corporate Education Center. We are quite pleased that we have this relationship with an institution of this high caliber. Their breadth and depth of course offerings, high quality of instruction and course material, and customized delivery and instruction have served our needs well,” explained Salisbury. “We have met our original goals to prepare our staff for PMP® certification and help others maintain certification, and the course offerings are broad enough to help with our other training needs.”
