Afforestation initiatives: In partnership with Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central and SayTrees, we organised afforestation drives, where we planted 400 saplings in various parts of Bengaluru and planted around 300 saplings exclusively in the International Technology Park (ITPL) forest.

Supporting people in need: At Tesco Bengaluru, we came up with an innovative idea to look at how we can recycle worn-off shoes of colleagues and have them reach to people in need. In partnership with Greensole, we implemented the idea by collecting 500 pairs of shoes from our colleagues and getting them recycled with the help of this partner. Reducing plastic consumption: Our colleagues thought of ways to reduce plastic consumption and gathered together for a combined initiative of making paper sacks, which were distributed to hawkers around the Whitefield region thereby encouraging them to replace plastic sacks with their paper-made counterparts.

Environment protection

Tesco Bengaluru is engaged with a lot of environment-focused initiatives that run through the year. Leading these ventures is an effort to give back to the community we live.

Health camps: With a commitment to provide free health-care to our next generation, Tesco Bengaluru in partnership with Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central and Trinity conducted free treatment for government-school children in the form of health camps across 21 schools in Whitefield, Bengaluru covering over 5150 children. Click here to access pictures from the health camps. While health camps are focused on school children, we also partnered with Sankara Eye Foundation to support vision restoration surgeries for the disadvantaged senior citizens of our community, through the ‘Gift of Vision’ programme which falls under our theme of Preventive Healthcare.

Mid-day meals: Akshaya Patra Foundation provides mid-day meals for over 5000 school children every day. We provided kitchen equipment including insulated vessels and vegetable cutters to the foundation.

Safe drinking water: Looking at the need to provide safe and clean drinking water to the communities we serve, Tesco Bengaluru in partnership with Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central and Waterlife India, set up an innovative water plant at a village called Naganayakanakote in Bengaluru to provide much-needed pure drinking water to the villagers and inadvertently touching 10,000 lives. Surgical kits: To ensure opportunities and promote inclusion in society we decided to fund and support APD’s Spinal Cord Injury Centre for mobility aids support and medical/surgical interventions.

Blood donation camp: Our colleagues conducted blood donation camps on campus and collected 574 units of blood to support needy people.

Preventive Healthcare

Tesco Bengaluru is leading various preventive healthcare initiatives with a focus on disadvantaged communities around us.

E-learning: In partnership with Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central and Meghashala, Tesco provided funds to equip teachers with vibrant approaches to learning. With the help of Meghashala, we empowered teachers with the most evolving learning methodologies through the provision of hardware and learning aids.

In partnership with Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central, we also engaged in various activities to support schools. Few of them involve funding the physical infrastructure, needs of the school and engagement with the students in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as sports, craft, language skills and more. We also supported schools in other ways such as provision for drinking water in three government schools, and sponsoring sports equipment for seven schools.

Our colleagues also actively engaged school children with various activities like Cubbetto – it is an attempt to introduce school children to coding. Along with that our colleagues also mentored them, trained them in sports and many more.

Skill-building: Every year, a large number of students drop out of school or college worldwide. A significant number of them go on to become unemployed and end up living in poverty. In an effort to uplift such youth, Tesco partnered with Unnati to provide them a 50 days of training and placements at the end of the training.

Education and Skill-building

At Tesco Bengaluru, Education is one of the major focus. Under the ‘School Adoption Model’, we support five government schools in the Whitefield locality through sustained engagement.

CSR Impact study: Tesco partnered with Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central to initiative an online survey on ‘Inter organisational collaboration in CSR’.

The study was conducted to understand the state of inter-organisational collaboration in CSR in India and ways companies can join hands for community projects to create a larger impact. The result is to share a model for inter-organisational collaboration, increase recognition of approaches to collaboration and success stories.

‘CSR Month’ – Making volunteering inclusive and engaging:

We completed a month-long campaign called ‘CSR Month’ in October 2017 which put the spotlight on CSR and volunteering. Over the course of the campaign, colleagues completed almost half of their annual volunteering targets and increased the volunteer base, while scaling the impact on the community we are embedded in.

‘Volunteering Fun, Fulfilling, and For Everyone’ served as a philosophy for the initiative. The initiative attempted to make CSR engaging and meaningful, and at the same time, breaking the myth of it being serious or dull. The goals of the CSR Month were to build connection and pride among colleagues through volunteering, and to scale our community impact.

We held multiple activities within our campus, across centres of our partner NGOs, at our adopted schools, and ran afforestation drives in public spaces and forest, in order to influence the internal audience as well as the communities at large. Several volunteering events were successfully organised, at various locations in the city. Each event had colleagues participating in large numbers.

Individual Social Responsibility programme:

In a unique attempt to back causes that colleagues are passionate about and establish a sense of ownership and connect, Tesco Bengaluru launched ISR programme. Through this, we invited colleagues to submit proposals for community or NGO projects which they were keen to own and drive, to create a sustainable impact. An independent panel reviewed the proposals received and selected the ones which Tesco Bengaluru would fund.

Tesco Bengaluru supported a colleague’s proposal to bring impact in the lives of special children. She supported a school with much needed infrastructure and basic necessities like bathroom doors, fixing latches, UPS, lights, plumbing and water taps. Our support also provided two laptops to school for improving the education standards. Through this we touched lives of 50 special children.

Payroll Giving:Over 5201 colleagues at Tesco Bengaluru are part of Give India’s Payroll Deduction Programme, contributing regularly to causes close to their hearts. In FY 2017-18, the overall contribution by colleagues totalled over INR 37,58,894. Since 2011, colleagues have contributed over 2.5 crores to the Give India payroll deduction programme. Give India is a donation platform that allows colleagues to support a cause of their choice from about 200 NGOs that have been scrutinised for transparency and credibility. Through their programme, several colleagues at Tesco Bengaluru have made donations from their salaries for causes ranging from child welfare and education to disability, poverty, and women’s empowerment to name just a few. There are 1771 active colleagues and with our participation rate being 47% we are ranked 2nd on Give India’s list of companies with over 1000 employees (of which they have 65).

Volunteering:Our CSR work is run on the backbone of colleague volunteering. Our colleagues at Tesco Bengaluru bring passion and rigor to our corporate social responsibility initiatives to make a measurable difference. We seek to get our colleagues engaged across the range of our CSR projects and partner NGOs, through diverse volunteering activities. Our ground-up, colleague-led approach puts the focus on human contribution and gets a significant chunk of our colleague population involved in our CSR as active participants.
