RESEARCH & PRACTICE Assessment of Stree Nidhi Lending on Tribal Populations In November 2019, the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) retained IICA to assess the impact of loans made to self-help groups (SHGs) by state channelizing agency (SCA) Stree Nidhi. IICA will assess the flow of NSTFDC funding via Stree Nidhi to tribal SHG members in four inter-tribal development areas (IDTAs) in Telangana. The study findings will help inform the depth of future loan subsidy extended to Stree Nidhi by NSTFDC. Stree Nidhi is a cooperative federation that connects SHGs to credit for the establishment of micro-enterprises and consumption. The organization is “community owned,” allocating a percentage of lending profits to slum-level federations and other SHG-supporting horizontals. The organization is capitalized through a variety of sources, including subsidized NSTFDC loans. The study will investigate the flow of Stree Nidhi credit to tribal SHG members, the interest rate and profit distribution pattern among layers of SHG federations, the organization’s targeting of tribal populations, and the impact of the scheme on the financial status. The study will cover 72 mandals in the ITDAs of Bhadrachalam, Eturunagaram, Utnoor and Mannar in the districts of Khammam, Warangal, Adilabad and Mehboobnagar. A research plan and survey instruments have been developed. Field work is expected in November, with report delivery scheduled for January 2020.
