In 1929 Walter Carefoot started his own business having finished hisapprenticeship with a local Preston builder. From those modest beginnings theGroup now has a turnover in the region of £30 million per year due to continuedstrong leadership and a loyal workforce.

Carefoot have built a reputation in the industry for delivering high quality workwhilst providing value for its Clients. We operate in the educational, health,commercial, leisure, ecclesiastical and residential markets in both the publicand private sector and have, over the years, developed strong relationshipswith Clients bringing repeat business due to our ability to understand a project’sneeds, and by having the openness for sharing technical and commercialknowledge within the project team.

This approach to collaborative working has meant that we have successfullybeen included on a number of frameworks with local authorities and othergovernment led initiatives, with over 70% of the company’s turnover beingachieved through this type of procurement.

We consider ourselves to be a company who are continually striving to be atthe forefront of construction industry best practice and aim to deliver all ourprojects on time and within budget, often exceeding Clients expectations indoing so.

Whether for Local Authorities or direct forthe educational provider, our experience inthis sector means we have developedsuccessful relationships in the primary,secondary and higher education fields.Through our framework agreements alonewe have delivered nearly 200 educationalprojects over the past 10 years amountingto over £100 million of our turnover makingit a core part of our construction business.

Our experience covers not just new buildschemes but refurbishments, involvingworking in live environments ensuring thatthe end users, from primary schoolchildren to degree-level students, are notunduly disturbed from their everydaystudies, whilst delivering high levels ofhealth, safety and security to the site.

HEALTH

Healthcare projects are often associatedwith the relocation of patients, theinstallation of specialist equipment,disruption of services and the meeting ofspecific targets agreed at the outset withthe healthcare provider, either in the publicor private sector. Carefoot understandthat in carrying out work of this natureconsideration must be given to minimisethe impact on patients and their carersduring their recuperation be it in a hospital,care home, day centre or clinic.

Carefoot are one of the few contractors inthe North West who have worked for theNHS since its inception in 1948. We havebuilt a reputation for delivering schemessuccessfully with the knowledge andunderstanding gained over the past 65years from ward refurbishments through tocomplex buildings for radiopharmacyfacilities, all working under strict siterestrictions imposed and expected withineach trust. HERITAGE

Over the years Carefoot have had theopportunity to work on heritage projectsthat require a considerate approachwhether it is a building that needsrenovating from a dilapidated state throughto a new build church, all of which have animpact on the local community. We havegained experience and a reputation forhigh standards of workmanship on GradeI and Grade II listed buildings includingChurches, Cathedrals, Town Halls,Libraries and Museums many havinggained awards for their design, build qualityand positive contribution.

Recently we have had the opportunity tobe involved in two prestigious schemes,these being the award winningrefurbishment of Central Library, Blackpooland the exciting regeneration of All SoulsChurch, Bolton into a modern communityfacility.

Our wide ranging knowledge of Clients’expectations when providing a leisureamenity means we offer reliability on qualityand durability alongside deadlines andbudgets that are often imposed whenopening a venture on time.

Having our own housing portfolio meanswe understand the pressures and budgetconstraints of developing affordablehousing whilst providing a neighbourhoodthat people want to live in.

Our involvement in this sector covershousing associations through to one-offprivate developers and encompasses notjust new build housing but repair andrefurbishment. Projects recently completedinclude bathroom replacements and re-roofing of a selection of houses withinRibble Valley Homes’ improvement ofhousing stock and the re-generation ofGrange Park for Blackpool Council with thenew build development of 31 houses toLevel Three Code for Sustainable Homesincluding a park for the local community.

Carefoot support the wider social, environmental andeconomic benefits on each project undertaken byproviding value for money and seeking to address theneeds of the communities within which we work.

Carefoot promote training and employmentopportunities often for under-represented groups,providing career guidance and supportingapprenticeships from within our own company and oursupply chain. We employ displaced apprentices aswell as committing to shared apprenticeship schemes.We always try to provide placements wherever we canto facilitate the recruitment of trainees, working closelywith organisations, who are helping young people thatare not in education, employment or training (NEET).

Our approach to sustainability is supported by ourcommitment to reducing waste, using recycledmaterials, and seeking to divert waste from landfill. Ourcarbon footprint is measured to ensure all sites reducetheir impact on the environment.

On many occasions we have funded resources orprovided labour for community initiatives and projects.This additional support during the works leaves apositive contribution long after we finish on site.

Carefoot Social Value principles extend through to oursupply chain. We are committed to the sourcing oflocal suppliers and subcontractors, who will reinvestinto their own communities. We measure and reportthe monetary value of this reinvestment at regularintervals during the works and on completion.

This approach maximises the real value for moneydelivered through the procurement and expenditureprocess of every contract we undertake.

Our high levels of quality are driven by our teams commitment tocontinuous improvement and a formal Quality Management Systemand Environmental Management System audited on a regular basis.These are accredited to ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004respectively and are in place to ensure levels of workmanship andperformance are sustained not just by us but by our supply chain.These are monitored by Key Performance Indicator (KPI) scoresgiven by our Clients or the End User.

All of our sites are Considerate Constructors Scheme registered toshow accountability and regard for the site, its neighbours, and thesurrounding environment.

Health and safety is high on the agenda on all of Carefoot’s sitesand we have a health and safety record that we are determined to

maintain. Carefoot are a member of the British Safety Council,North West Construction Safety Group, CDM Duty Holders Groupand the Lancashire Working Well Together Group and are CHASaccredited. Our Health and Safety Manager is also a member ofthe Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and theInternational Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). Wealso have a Company Mascot ‘Sammy Safesite’ who visits schoolchildren to help deliver the important message of health and safetywhen being taught in close proximity to the building site.

Carefoot are supporters of various construction forums includingthe Lancashire Construction Best Practice Club where we are afounder corporate member. Members of staff are encouraged toattend CPD events and networking opportunities to enable us tocontinue in our efforts to provide innovative and balanced ideas for

our Clients whilst driving the Company forward in its thinking andbest practice initiatives.

We are also Constructionline approved and have procedures inplace for our supply chain to be the same.

We are proud to have achieved the Investor in People GoldStandard, an accolade only achieved by 1% of organisations in theUK. This is demonstration of our engagement with our staff. In orderfor Carefoot to continually improve procedures and practices ourstaff are given the opportunity for ongoing training anddevelopment. This benefits the company and our Clients.
