‘HELPING HANDS WOULD NOT BE A SUCCESS WITHOUT THE PASSION OF OUR PEOPLE’

TWELVE MONTHS AT A GLANCEWelcome to our 2016 Helping Hands corporate giving report. Here, you’ll read about just some of the wonderful things we’ve achieved together.

One particular highlight of 2016 was our long-term partnership with the global charity Right To Play, which continues to help improve the lives of countless children around the world through the power of sport and play.

This year we took some staff to visit Right To Play projects in Ghana through a new initiative we launched called ‘Community Stars’, which rewards our people who give back to their own communities. The winners were joined by ex-England international rugby player and Right To Play Athlete Ambassador Mike Tindall on a thought-provoking and unforgettable trip.

We also continued to partner with CARE International and in 2016 ran appeals for the refugee crisis in Syria and victims of the Ecuador earthquake. We will continue to work closely with CARE during times of international emergency and know we can count on your support in 2017.

Our work with Prostate Cancer UK continued for a second year in 2016. Lads Night In was once again a popular way for people to raise money through poker for this important male health charity. Prostate Cancer UK was also the charity we chose to benefit from the hugely successful ‘Quintessentially Poker Night’ held at The Savoy, London.

Our players once again proved how generous they are and throughout 2016 showed their support through a variety of channels. Players raised thousands of dollars at our live events and online through StarsCoin donations.

Helping Hands would not be a success without the passion of our people. Each donation and hour spared for a good cause creates lasting and positive change, and more inspiration for the year to come.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our work.

Through company donations and live events fundraising, as well as player and staff donations, 2016 took our total commitment to the charity so far to over £1 million.

This money means that Right To Play can continue to use sport and play to help educate children who live in challenging environments as well as help train a new generation of coaches to help support those without opportunities.

This is a vital charity that empowers hundreds of thousands of children to learn about themselves and their communities and we are proud to continue our work with them in 2017.

Transforming children’s lives through the power of sport and play.

THIS YEAR WE CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR WORK WITH HELPING HANDS’ OFFICIAL GLOBAL CHARITY PARTNER RIGHT TO PLAY.

Hosted at The Grange, St Pauls in London, the Right To Play Sports Quiz brought together more than 300 people to raise funds and pit their sporting knowledge against one another, in the hope of seeing their name engraved on the winner’s trophy.

Broadcaster John Inverdale compered an interactive sports quiz, which saw thirty teams compete alongside stars from the sporting world while silent live auctions took place alongside the main competition.

Right To Play Athlete Ambassador and ex-England international rugby star Mike Tindall was amongst the guests while Neymar Jr and Sergio Garcia joined in by video to ask some special questions, arranged by us.

More than £125,000 was raised on the night, which is an enormous achievement.

We launched a new scheme called ‘Community Stars’ aimed at rewarding staff who have given back to their own local communities by giving them a place on an inspiring field visit with the Right To Play team.

Ghana was chosen as the destination with one of Right To Play’s most established regional offices in Africa.

Together with Mike Tindall, we were lucky enough to visit schools that run Right To Play programmes as well as get the chance to see the work they do with other partners such as the New Horizon Special School and a foundation for street children.

Everyone brought home some special memories from the trip. It was a great way to reward the kindness of our staff and their commitment to their local communities, as well as showcase the important work Right To Play does throughout theirs.

You can find out more about our trip to Ghana with Right To Play by visiting the PokerStars Blog and Corporate Blog.

COMMUNITY STARS TAKE A FIELD TRIP TO GHANA

THIS YEAR WE WANTED TO GIVE STAFF MEMBERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT RIGHT TO PLAY PROJECTS TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE YOUR GENEROSITY MAKES ON THE GROUND.

Right To Play transforms the lives of over one million disadvantaged children every day across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia through the power of sport and play.

They train local community leaders and teachers to become volunteer coaches. They then teach children by playing specially designed games.

As the children develop and learn new skills around community, health and friendship, they pass these on to other Right To Play members and often go on to become coaches themselves.

Their programmes are sustainable and ensure long-term development. When children and young people gain new skills, they have the ability to pass these on to future generations, thus ensuring lasting change.

Funding from our players and staff helps provide food and shelter to people whose homes have been destroyed and ensures vulnerable communities have access to water, sanitation and healthcare.

This is life changing support at times when it matters most. Times such as April 2016 when Ecuador was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that caused widespread devastation, killed more than 250 people and injured over 2,500 more.

Not surprisingly, our main focus of support throughout 2016 has been the devastating crisis in Syria. For over five years Syria has been the most dangerous place in the world to live as a civilian, with no end in sight. Estimates number refugees at over 4.5 million, meaning more than one in five Syrians has left the country. Women and children make up 75% of those displaced.

Our players and staff have donated online through dedicated donation pages and through our VIP Store. Here, players can give 2,000 StarsCoins, which we then convert into a $20 donation.

More than $60,000 has been raised through these channels and will go towards helping those caught up in the crisis.

The power and generosity of our players and staff at a time of crisis is something we are incredibly proud of. Throughout 2017 we will work with CARE on new ideas to enhance the work we do together and continue to support them at times of international emergency.

HELPING HANDS’ PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GLOBAL RELIEF CHARITY CARE CONTINUED IN 2016. OUR SUPPORT ALLOWS CARE TO RESPOND IMMEDIATELY WHEN DISASTER STRIKES.

OUR MAIN FOCUS OF SUPPORT THROUGHOUT 2016 HAS BEEN THE DEVASTATING CRISIS IN SYRIA.

Today, CARE fights hardship and injustice in more than 80 countries and helps millions of the world’s people to find routes out of poverty. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, helping people to rebuild their lives.

CARE has assisted more than 2.34 million people inside Syria and neighbouring countries and provides emergency assistance to refugee families crossing into Europe.

LADS NIGHT INTHIS ANNUAL ONE-NIGHT POKER EVENT RETURNED FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN OCTOBER TO BRING FRIENDS TOGETHER IN THE FIGHT AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER.

PokerStars has worked closely with leading men’s health charity Prostate Cancer UK for the last two years to help raise awareness and money for this great cause.

Prostate cancer is a condition which claims the life of a UK male on average every hour. Lads Night In encourages people to host a home game of poker and donate the prize pool to the charity. This is the perfect opportunity to help make a real difference with a friendly game of poker.

Across the country men and women of all ages met up to play cards and share some laughs. We are delighted that so many players once again got behind the campaign.

PROSTATE CANCER UK - GO DAD RUN

IN 2016, WE ALSO GOT BEHIND GO DAD RUN TO COMPLEMENT OUR SUPPORT OF PROSTATE CANCER UK.

Founded by Olympic hurdler Colin Jackson CBE, the 5k and 10k fun run events are aimed at men and boys who wish to raise money and awareness and combat prostate cancer in the UK.

Everyone who signs up gets a pack which includes a giant pair of blue y-fronts, which runners wear over their kit.

This year, for the first time ever, Go Dad Run came to PokerStars’ home on the Isle of Man. Hundreds of people, including several members of our staff, took part in a race along the promenade in the island’s capital, Douglas.

They joined thousands of other runners across the UK as well as several well-known sporting professionals including Derek Redmond, Mark Foster and Donovan Bailey.Stefan Markov and Justin

Through Helping Hands we donated $100,000 to support research, advocacy and awareness efforts during Autism Awareness Month in April, and beyond.

This coincided with our re-entry into the United States in March when we launched the PokerStarsNJ client. The partnership had particular significance to Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker, who is a keen supporter of the charity.

To mark Autism Awareness Month the charity ran a campaign called ‘Light It Up Blue’, which sees thousands of iconic buildings, landmarks, businesses and homes across the globe unite by shining bright blue lights to reflect the Autism Speaks colours.

On April 2, to mark World Autism Day, PokerStars added its support by changing our famous red spade to blue.

AUTISM SPEAKS IN NEW JERSEY

IN 2016, WE ANNOUNCED A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW JERSEY CHAPTER OF AUTISM SPEAKS, THE WORLD’S LEADING AUTISM SCIENCE AND ADVOCACY ORGANISATION.

It is dedicated to funding research into the causes of autism as well as methods for its prevention and treatment. It aims to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorders and advocate for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. Since its inception, Autism Speaks has committed more than $570 million to its mission, the majority in science and medical research.

Richard Parker took part in the Ealing Half marathon and raised £630 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Joan Hadley raised more than £1,600 for a charity called Prison Works by being ‘arrested’ and locked inside a real prison for 24-hours.

Mitko Draganov completed the Shine Night Walk marathon in London in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, raising more than £250.

GIVING BACK - OUR PEOPLE LIKE TO MAKE AN IMPACTOur staff are important to us. We encourage them to fundraise for causes that are close to their own hearts by matching what they raise.

Since Helping Hands was launched in 2013, we’ve raised over £100,000. Through the Helping Hands matching scheme more than £70,000 has been added to this total, meaning in excess of £170,000 has been donated to local charities thanks to the efforts of our people throughout the world.

RACE THE SUN (TEAM FROM ISLE OF MAN)

A team of 10 brave individuals took part in one of the toughest challenges on the island this year in aid of charity.

The task is simple: starting at sunrise, each team must complete a clockwise lap of the Isle of Man’s dramatic 100-mile coastal footpath before the sun sets. Split into 10 demanding sections, the course follows the Raad ny Foillan, a stunning trail with significant height gain.

The team not only completed the event but also won the ‘golden shoe’ for the most money raised, having collected £1,600 in donations which was then matched.

Here are just a few other examples of what was achieved in 2016.

OUR VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME CONTINUED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO COUNTLESS CHARITIES IN 2016.

MANY HELPING HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

OUR PEOPLE: VOLUNTEERING

Through Helping Hands staff can take one day off per year to volunteer for a charitable cause of their choice. In 2016 alone, we spent over 500 hours helping good causes.

This time is incredibly valuable to charities and also rewarding for our people. The enthusiasm of our staff to give back to communities in this way is something we are very proud of.

Here are just a few examples of the difference our teams made in 2016.

More than 90 volunteers from our head office in the Isle of Man helped to transform a community space for local charity ‘The Children’s Centre’. From clearing overgrown areas to building adventure playgrounds and sheds, even painting public toilets, our team gave 100% and made a huge difference.

Our Malta office has had a busy year supporting a range of charities, notably continuing their close relationship with the charity Inspire.

They participated in a team building challenge during a TV telethon organised to raise funds for the association and made a donation of €5,000 to help the charity renovate its facilities. Following the event the committee was invited to a reception for World Disability Day in the presence of the Prime Minister of Malta’s wife, Michelle Muscat.

ISLE OF MAN

MALTA

Over two days, our people in Dublin took time out to show off their culinary skills and spend time cooking their own ingredients for the families of sick children living in Ronald McDonald House Crumlin, Dublin.

The house provides accommodation every night for up to 20 families who have seriously ill children in the adjacent hospital.

DUBLIN

Our Costa Rica office got involved in a number of projects this year. One was the funding and construction of a chicken farm and the purchase of 200 egg-laying hens for a shelter that gives support to 80 young adults at risk.

The shelter provides formal and vocational education as well as accommodation for its residents, while the chicken farm is part of a food sustainability programme.

CHARITY AT A LOCAL LEVEL

HELPING HANDS HAS LOCAL COMMITTEES BASED IN EACH OF OUR KEY OPERATIONAL AND SERVICE OFFICES.

These committees continue to engage staff across our offices whilst supporting good causes in every region where we have a presence.

Each committee faces a different challenge with the same response: the generosity of our staff.

Over £600,000 and countless man-hours have been donated to local charities since Helping Hands began.

Here are a few stories from 2016.

The charity committee in Costa Rica funded the entire construction of this outdoor games area.

The Isle of Man office had a busy year supporting over 20 local charities and helping to raise more than £50,000 on top of their own donations.

This year the Isle of Man office partnered with local radio station 3FM for a Christmas campaign appealing for donations of presents for disadvantaged children. Collection points were positioned all over the island, including our head office. Thanks to our staff, hundreds of children living in challenging environments received a present this year.

Once again our Costa Rica office made a huge contribution to its community.

In 2016, their major project was the construction of a multipurpose, roofed outdoor games area to benefit more than 100 children of the Sarapiqui School in the central area of the country.

This is used during school hours, evenings and weekends and is the only recreational area available to children who could otherwise be vulnerable to negative influences.

In 2016 Helping Hands supported this annual event for the first time and raised more than £38,000, the highest figure since the event began six years ago.

The event also coincided with the 50th anniversary of England winning the 1966 World Cup, captained by the legendary Bobby Moore OBE.

The charity contributes vital money to life-saving bowel cancer research and our sponsorship complements our association with Cancer Research UK.

OUR PEOPLE: LIVE EVENTS

LIVE EVENTS THE BRAIN PROJECT

In 2016, we hosted a charity event at every stop of the European Poker Tour, raising in excess of £70,000 for our charity partner Right To Play.

Our charity events attracted a host of celebrities, high-rollers and Team PokerStars Pros, with great side events and prizes including a table tennis challenge with Commonwealth Games medalist and Right To Play Athlete Ambassador Darius Knight.

We also continued our relationship with the Quintessentially Foundation, which this year ran its annual poker night at The Savoy, London. Since our involvement began, we have helped raise over £500,000 through this event alone. Prostate Cancer UK was one of Helping Hands’ nominated charities in 2016.

Finally, we took fundraising to new heights when we organised a bespoke poker event on the 29th floor of Altitude 360 in London. This one-off event helped raise more than £55,000 for the ‘Acts Of Kindness Collective’, which was set up to help rebuild schools in Nepal following the devastating earthquake in 2015.

100 ‘blank canvas’ brains were sponsored by companies and individuals and transformed into some spectacular pieces of art.

Our brain was titled ‘Gaming’ and was designed by digital artist Ron Wild. It celebrates the value of gaming in our lives and visualises the range of mental functions that are exercised when we play - linking gaming to a stronger, healthier brain.

OUR LIVE EVENTS ARE A GREAT WAY TO GET TOGETHER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHILE ENJOYING A BIT OF FRIENDLY COMPETITION AT THE TABLES.

IN 2016, AMAYA BECAME A SPONSOR OF THE BRAIN PROJECT IN TORONTO; A SUMMER-LONG PUBLIC ART EXHIBITION CREATED BY THE BAYCREST FOUNDATION TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA.
