Coronavirus Update 16/08/2021

General:

While cases are high and rising, everybody needs to continue to act carefully and remain cautious.

Sites and work need to be planned and organised to avoid crowding and minimise the risk of spread of infection by following PHE and HSE guidance.

Testing when you have symptoms.

whilst Government is no longer instructing people to work from home if they can, Government would expect and recommend a gradual return over the summer

Government expects and recommends that people wear face coverings in crowded areas such as public transport;

When assessing and mitigating the risk consider ERIC. Eliminate, Reduce, Isolate, Control.

Eliminate

Unwell workers with symptoms should not travel to or attend the workplace, they should get tested from an NHS facility immediately.

If you have been double vaccinated, you do not need to isolate if you have come into contact with someone who has tested positive. If you produce a positive test, you must self-isolate.

Reduce

Social distancing and the wearing of masks has been removed. However, ALS advice is to still be cautious and adopt a sensible approach. Remember, some people and in particular the elderly and clinically vulnerable will still be social distancing and wearing their masks.

Continue to minimise the number of workers involved in the tasks Don’t get too close to one another. Regularly wipe down common touchpoints e.g. van door handles, pens, equipment that has been touch by unprotected hands, vehicle cabs and tools etc Be mindful of members of the public that continue to wear their masks, they are still concerned.

Isolate

Keep groups of workers that need to work within 2m: Together in teams (do not change them) As small as possible Away from other workers. (Particularly with ALS projects where you are on construction sites)

Control

As the regular measures have been removed, again move forward with a sensible approach. If working closely with others:

Don’t remain together for a lengthy period. Don’t cough or sneeze on your colleagues. Write your measures in the POWA.

PPE

Each activity should be risk assessed (please add to your daily POWA). Re-usable PPE should be thoroughly cleaned after use and not shared between workers Single use PPE should be disposed of safely. Where operatives are required to work in an area where (persons are shielding, with symptoms, or confirmed Coronavirus cases may be present e.g. healthcare or in a home environment) additional PPE should be considered specific to the COVID-19 risk.

Behaviours

The measures necessary to minimise the risk or spread of infection rely on everyone in the industry taking responsibility for their actions and behaviours. Please encourage all operatives, sub-contractors, agents and our partner agencies to collaborate and openly discuss any issues that arise.

Welfare Unit

ALS Civil Engineers generally hire in a unit.

All surfaces to be wiped down with supplied disinfectant Hand sanitiser and gel will be provided. Wash hands prior to and after using the toilet facility Wipe down any surfaces touched after use e.g kettle, microwave, pen and table. Continue with this process.

General

The risk of viral transmission is negligible provided that all members of the working party are symptom free and maintain good hygiene practices. Should a member of the working party develop symptoms whilst on-site, the agent should be contacted immediately, if indisposed then contact the

company secretary (Jan Whittaker 01843 850746). In these circumstances transport home will be arranged. Safety measures for the driver and operative will have to be maintained:

The transporting vehicle will need to be appropriately ventilated RPE to be worn by both The operative’s PPE will require immediate cleansing The vehicle’s cab will require complete cleansing

Public Health England further Advice

Advice in the construction environment where there is use of enclosed machinery such as diggers:

Operatives should continue to wash or sanitise their hands regularly on site. Ensure vehicles and enclosed spaces are well ventilated. The inside of cabs should be regularly cleaned, particularly if used by different operatives. Minimise vehicle sharing where possible.

Although many of the Government restrictions have now been removed, it is only sensible that we continue to be cautious regarding the Coronavirus. We have to be considerate for our colleagues and members of the public who have been touched by this virus. For many it is not yet over and for some it is still to happen. These new guidelines published by ALS Civil Engineers have taken this into account.

Adopt a sensible approach and stay safe for your family, yourself, your colleagues and members of the public.
