We hope everyone is looking forward to the start of spring over the next few weeks as you get in your last few runs down the ski hill and start planning for your upcoming family vacation over spring or summer break. As we continue to navigate the 17-18 school year, a few things have come up that we would like to communicate to all families. Safety & Security – Coronado would like to remind all families about the Standard Response Protocol followed at all Jeffco Public Schools. Detailed information can be found on page 3 of this newsletter. Please note the difference between a lockdown and a lockout (which is what we experienced last Friday, February 23rd). Information about the nation-wide event on March 14th planned by EMPOWER, the Women’s March youth branch can be found on page 2 following this letter. Family and Community Partnership Survey – Last fall between Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks all families were sent a survey link requesting feedback related to six nationally recognized family engagement standards as experienced at Coronado Elementary School. This morning our School Accountability Committee, Partners in Education, reviewed feedback from the 65 Coronado respondents who completed the survey. Two indicators came up that we would like to address: o I know the school’s process for resolving complaints or problems. All communicated concerns from staff, students and parents are investigated by administrative and/or teaching staff at Coronado. A response to each situation is handled as appropriate to the information received and investigation conducted. With regard to student conflict, we have adopted a Restorative Practice approach. The goals of a restorative approach are as follows: Investigation/Fact Finding – “What happened?” Accountability – “What is each party willing to take responsibility for?” Identification of impact – “Who has been affected?” Restoration – “How can we repair that which has been broken?” Application – “How can we ensure this does not happen again?” o The school's parent groups include all types of families. Coronado has two main parent groups, PIE (Partners in Education) and PTA (Parent/Teacher Association). In an effort to meet the varying needs of family schedules PIE meets in the morning and PTA meets in the evening. PIE is our school accountability committee. It is a group of volunteer parents, staff members and community members working together to advise Coronado administration about improving, modifying, implementing, and/or altering practices. Some of PIE’s accomplishments include: healthy school initiatives, family handbook revisions, student-based budgeting recommendations, improved school to home communication, school marketing ideas, etc. PIE meets the first Friday of each month from 8:15am to 9:30am in the staff lounge. ALL parents/guardians and community members are invited and welcome to join us at PIE meetings!

Some of these include: Boosterthon, Donuts with Dad, Science Fair, Girls Night Out Dance, Talent Show, Morning with Mom, Silent Auction, Carnival, and so much more! They coordinate fundraising events and designate funds to support school improvement initiatives focused on student achievement and wellness (i.e. Chrome Books, Smart Boards, Musical Instruments, Author Visits, Assemblies, Playground Improvements, etc.). PTA meets the second Monday of each month from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the library. ALL parents/guardians are invited and encouraged to join us at PTA meetings throughout the year!

Jeffco Generations Vision

March 14th Information: The recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida, has incited a variety of emotions in our students, families, and staff across Jefferson County. Many have asked questions regarding how to help, how to process with children, and what to do next. Thank you for the support you have shown to our school community; we are grateful for our family and community partners who care deeply about the safety and success of all students. Schools across Jeffco have also received questions regarding an event organized by EMPOWER, the Women’s March youth branch. The event is planned for Wednesday, March 14th, one month after the Parkland, Florida tragedy. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am in each time zone across the U.S. and last for 17 minutes — one minute for each victim. Per our policies, Jeffco Public School staff will neither promote nor endorse a walkout event. However, we acknowledge that some of our students, staff, and families may want to participate in some capacity. Our school focus for March 14th will remain on teaching and learning as well as student safety. We will not be planning or organizing a walkout or protest event at Coronado. Parents or guardians may choose to excuse students for the day or check them out early. Normal attendance notification procedures should be followed, and absences will be excused.

2018-2019 Coronado Preschool Registration

Preschool Registration for the 2018-2019 school year for children who are 3 by October 1, is now open.

Preschool registration is a 2-step process.

First, families will set up an account on Jeffco Connect and add your child to the

account. Complete the Student Information Card online.

Second, families will obtain a registration packet from the preschool and fill out

the paperwork. Return the packet to the preschool along with copies of your child’s

birth certificate and immunization record.

You will need to complete BOTH steps in order for registration to be complete. Tuition assistance is

available for qualifying families.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a time to come and visit our preschool classrooms,

please contact the

Director, Ginny Lyons at 303-982-3723! _____________________________________________________________________________________

Registration Packets are available on our website at www.coronado.jeffcopublicschools.org or in the

main office.

The Coronado kindergarten team works together to create a developmentally appropriate environment

and curriculum. The program is designed to meet the varied needs of the children by providing a balance

of teacher directed and child initiated learning, as well as addressing literacy standards. We have a

strong academic program and our emphasis is on developing readers, writers, and problem solvers.

Dear Coronado Elementary Parent/Guardian,

Each year, students in our state (grades 3 – 11) take a standardized assessment aligned to the Colorado

Academic Standards. This month Coronado students will begin this assessment called the Colorado Measures

of Academic Success (CMAS). Within our state-adopted test is the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness

for College and Careers (PARCC) which assesses student proficiency and growth in English Language Arts

(ELA) and math. Additionally, students in 5th

& 8th

grades take a science component, and students in 4th

& 7th

grades take a social studies component. Testing sessions are scheduled between March and April depending on

your child’s grade. Specific schedules will be shared prior to the start of testing on March 20th.

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has communicated that the CMAS tests provide parents with

greater insight on students’ progress. CMAS provides a more accurate understanding of student knowledge

because students will be asked to show and apply what they know, instead of just picking the right answer from

a multiple-choice question. CMAS raises the bar and measures students’ progress toward the higher standards

they will need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.

Standardized tests inform our school in many ways. Our teachers, for example, review the results from the state

tests to adjust instruction and set goals the following year. Students and families will be provided with

additional data supporting the body of evidence that indicates student mastery of, or progress toward, grade

level expectations. Our school is also accredited, in part, based on CMAS results.

During the testing window, we ask that you do your best to ensure students arrive to school on time, get a good

night’s sleep, have a healthy breakfast and/or lunch, and be present at school as consistently as possible. Please

encourage your child to put forth his/her best effort but not worry or stress about this assessment. If you have

question about CMAS, please contact our school.

Sincerely,

Amanda Pierorazio

Principal
