MinackTheatreThe Minack Theatre is Cornwall's world famous open-air theatre.The Summer season of theatre runs from May to September presenting drama, musicals and opera in this most dramatic of settings.

Minack in Cornish means a rocky place and the black headed crag below the theatre has always drawn local fishermen. Until the 1930’s they had the gorse filled gully to themselves and the cliffs echoed to the cries of gulls not actors.

From 1931 until she died in 1983 the Minack Theatre was planned, built and financed by one determined woman - Rowena Cade. “

“From our home in Cornwall, Kneehigh have built a reputation for creating vigorous and popular theatre for audiences throughout the UK and beyond. In Cornwall, 1980, a village school teacher began to run theatre workshops in his spare time. In due course a mixture of people became involved, a farmer, the sign writer from Tesco, several students, a thrash guitarist from a local band, an electrician. No actors...nobody who had been trained. The workshops took place in the spirit of cheerful anarchy and casually slipped into performance, and finally the production of shows.”

“In 1994 the Dance and Drama teacher of Penair got together, at an informal meeting, with a couple of dance teachers from neighbouring secondary schools and decided to work together and pool resources so that ideas could be shared and top choreographers employed for joint workshops - and for the benefit of all.By the end of that first year, a Committee was formed; all of the seconday schools in the Carrick area were represented; a project bank account was opened; 8 joint workshops took place and the 5 schools involved held 4 Celebration Sharing Evenings of high quality dance.”
