MAY 2019 EVENTS! There are always so many exciting events in May! Here are the ones that the Hal and Inge Marcus School of Engineering can boast about! MSSA Graduation On May 10, 2019 our Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA) program graduated 40 individuals from Cohorts 22 (Server & Cloud Administration) and 23 (Cloud Application Development), all of whom received certificates for completing their respective 16-week programs. The keynote speaker for this ceremony was Ms. Ann Johnson, Corporate Vice President of the Cybersecurity Solutions Group at Microsoft. Ms. Johnson specializes in cyber resilience, online fraud, cyberattacks,

compliance, and mobile security. READ MORE

The Pledge of the Computing Professional Directly following the MSSA graduation, we offered something completely new to our Computer Science and Information Technology graduates – The Pledge of the Computing Professional. In 2007, inspired by the example of the Order of the Engineer, individuals at Ohio Northern University and the University of South Florida created similar organizations for graduates of their respective computing programs. After interest in such an organization grew at other institutions, The Pledge of the Computing Professional was developed by an international team of 17 computing professionals. The Saint Martin’s University Chapter of The Pledge of the Computing Professional was established this year, 2019, as the 50th Node in the Organization’s Linked List of Nodes and the 2nd Node in the state of Washington. We are proud to be able to offer this to our students graduating with bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science or Information Technology, as well as those receiving a Master of Science in Computer Science.

With this inaugural ceremony, 49 graduates, faculty members, and computing professionals from the field were initiated by taking an oath, and pledging to act both morally and ethically as a member of the profession. Each received a certificate and a lapel pin as a visible symbol and reminder of their pledge. The pin (at left) shows a matrix with the word “honor” encoded in ASCII, the character encoding standard for electronic

communications. READ MORE

Annual Engineering BBQ Another popular event, is our annual BBQ for all of our school’s seniors. This event was also held on Friday, May 10th, in between The Pledge of the Computing Professional and the Order of the Ring Ceremony. Great food and great fellowship for everyone!

A few of the many Engineering BBQ guests enjoyed the super weather and great view!

One of the 49 new initiates, Mr. Thomas Dawkins (left), a director in Microsoft’s Office of Military Affairs and one of the architects of the MSSA program, is congratulated on taking the pledge himself by HIMSE Dean, Dr. David Olwell (right).

GAME DEVELOPMENT CAMP Once again, the School of Engineering is offering our popular summer game development camps for youth ages 11 to 18 on our Lacey campus. These week-long half-day camps (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) introduce and familiarize students with the processes and applications of game development. Our game camps are a great way for students to gain exposure to higher learning academic settings with hands-on experience with industry technology. We are offering three camp sessions of Level 1 Beginner, with students introduced to object-based programming, graphic and sound files, as well as basic animation; and two camp sessions of Level 2 Intermediate, where students learn how to create programs in GameMaker and receive an introduction to Unity--a 3D game engine and the number one tool in the industry. Level 1 camp weeks: June 24, July 8, and July 22. Level 2 camp weeks: July 15 and July 29. The camp is led overall by Dr. Mario Guimaraes, and taught by instructor Kristi Lee (MSCS graduate student) and assistant Ethan Worden (CS

undergraduate student). There’s still room to enroll in the July camps! READ MORE

DEAN’S CORNER It is hard to believe that I am starting my fifth year as Dean at the Hal and Inge Marcus School of Engineering! The first four years have seen a great deal of progress: the construction of the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation, a wildly successful ABET reaccreditation, the establishment and flourishing of a Computer Science Department, the addition of outstanding new faculty and staff who continue our strong support of the SMU mission, the expansion of the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy, the launch of a chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, the opening of the Lacey MakerSpace, and a host of other activities. Most importantly, we have graduated students who model our Benedictine values and who will serve our communities as ethically grounded professionals. It has been a joy!

This edition of the newsletter celebrates our students. The class of 2019 really left their mark, and we were pleased to recognize so many of them at the Honors Convocation. As well, our Dean’s list continues to grow, reflecting the excellent job our students are doing in the classroom. The classes of 2020 and beyond are poised to match or exceed the accomplishments of ’19. As of this summer, SMU has shattered all enrollment records for first-year and transfer students. I’ll have more to say about the new classes in the fall newsletter, but the strength of the engineering and computer science programs continues to be one of the strongest draws to SMU. As always, we could not make any of this happen without the committed and continuing support of our alumni and Engineering Advisory Board. The support of this alumni community means the world to our students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Shawn Duan, Dr. Rico Picone, Dr. Corrie Walton-Macaulay, and I taught for three weeks in China after graduation at our sister school, the North China Institute of Aerospace Engineering (NCIAE). It was a very good experience. I taught probability and statistics to 71 students. They reminded me that students are pretty much the same all around the world at that age: the engaged front two rows, the semi-engaged middle rows, and the rest of the class! The students had not seen a U.S. approach to classroom management, content presentation, many of the examples, and an

interactive teaching style. I had not tried to use Chinese statistical tables or their systems of instructional technology. We all got through it, and it was rewarding. We will host some students and faculty from NCIAE at SMU later this summer. I was pleased that we added The Pledge of the Computing Professional to our graduation events for computer science students. As earlier articles say, we have now conducted the ceremony twice. I would like to acknowledge Ms. Tam Léger, our school’s Executive Assistant, for the original bright idea to do this to initiate our computer science students professionally, as we have done for decades for our engineering students!

The Lacey MakerSpace has opened in portions of Zaverl Hall that used to house the manufacturing and welding labs. HIMSE has been a strong partner in this effort between SMU, the City of Lacey, the Thurston County Economic Development Council, and

other community stakeholders, such as the Port of Olympia. We have arranged for a number of student memberships, giving our engineering students access to additive manufacturing capabilities that we do not have in our lab suites, as well as providing them with work-study opportunities. READ MORE We have many events to look forward to this fall: the addition of new faculty, the coming 125th anniversary of the university, our decennial regional reaccreditation, and hopefully laying the foundations for a new industrial engineering program. Thank you for your support of engineering and computer science at Saint Martin’s University. You make all our successes possible! And if you have suggestions to improve this newsletter or story ideas, please send them along to: [email protected]. Thank you, and with best wishes,

David H. Olwell, Ph.D., Dean
