We entered another Season of Lent late last month and will spend all of this month coming together once again to acknowledge in a very particular way our “separation” from God, from one another, and even from our true selves. In prayer and with some more intentional conversations, studies, and worship we strive to “repent” and “return” to God through a better understanding for what we should be doing with our lives.

We will be focusing our attention on the gospel of Matthew, specifically Matthew 25:31-46. Take out your bible and open it to this passage. Leave it open through the season of Lent this year and return to it often. In liturgy, song, and sermon this month we will be considering:

What is the Son of Man? Who are the Sheep and the Goats? Where are the Hungry and Thirsty, the Naked and Estranged, the Sick and Imprisoned?

And, what have we to do with any of this?

The focus on “separation” is not the only context for the season of Lent. This season also finds us alongside Jesus and his journey: into Jerusalem, up to Calvary and the Cross, down to the tomb, all the way through his, and into our own, “redeemed life.” As we have been doing so far this year, let’s continue to see ourselves in the life and the love of Jesus. Let’s not find ourselves just reading about someone else (as wonderful a person as he must have been!), but learning about ourselves, or at least about who we were created to be. This is our story, too, remember. From our own lives: onto a cross, unto death, into new life. Our Lenten journey is our daily one, written large for the whole world to see

As always, this month’s newsletter is full of many ministries, mission engagements, educational offerings, and fellowship opportunities. Take note of them all and get involved where you can and where you feel led. And then … focus not on any one event, but on the season they lead us through and the life they call us to ...

See you in church,

Joel

2020 ANNUAL ELDER RETREAT REPORT

On Friday, January 31st, your Elders gathered again for our Annual Elder Retreat – once again this year at the PCUSA’s Camp Cedar Ridge. We had dinner together and spent Friday evening getting to know each other better with informal activities and anticipated the time together the next morning. On Saturday morning after breakfast and a brief devotion, we sat together to take a closer look at our Team Ministries. Last year, we discussed our Team Ministry structure to consider whether it was meeting the current needs of the congregation or the vision we have of the years ahead. This year, we looked at the Team descriptions and make-up to see if we were still doing what we say we are doing and whether or not we need to be doing more! Ashia led us in a wonderful conversation that, as always, was just the beginning of a larger conversation that we carry into the year ahead. We are asking each Team, in their meetings this year, to “brainstorm” their own sense of the Team’s purpose, how they might collaborate with other Teams, and to share praise for what they are doing well. As always, pull an Elder aside and thank them for the extra time and discernment they give to all of us in their service on Session. We have been blessed with incredible leadership and imagination – two crucial needs for a vibrant and vital community.

ILLUMINATING LENT A Lenten study in the Thoughtful Christian Class

From the Presbyterian Mission Agency

March 1 - Introducing Lent Session One discusses the background to Lent and some ways we can “give up” and/or “take on” in our daily lives. March 8 - Upward: What We Do for God Session Two introduces the first of the “directions.” The emphasis is on our lives as we glorify God. March 15 - Inward: What God Does in Us Session Three zeroes in on the “inward” sense of communion with God and having a lively sense of the presence of God in

our lives. March 22 - Downward: What God Gives to Us Session Four finds us focused “downward” to what God gives us for our lives, body, and soul. March 29 - Forward: Where God Leads Us Session Five focuses on the life of discipleship and our response to the call of Christ. Our lives as his followers will include

trials, temptations, and evil, as well. April 5 - Onward: What God Will Do The final Session Six is on Palm Sunday and looks “onward,” or beyond, into Holy Week and Easter using the closing

doxology of the Lord’s Prayer.

If you haven’t considered it before, consider for Lent 2020: JOIN US IN THE THOUGHTFUL CHRISTIAN CLASS

MYSTAGOGIA 2020: CONFIRMATION AT PVPC!

Wednesdays through March

Confirmation Sunday on Palm Sunday, April 5th at our 10:30 a.m. Worship

During this month, six of our Youth are on a journey toward a more mature and deeper Christian faith through study in PVPC’s Confirmation Experience, Mystagogia. On this journey they explore the mysteries of God, Christ, the Church, our teachings, the Christian life, and their own professions of faith. They are preparing to step into active membership by being confirmed by us as a congregation in their lifelong journey of faith.

On Palm Sunday, we will confirm Katie Clark, Crain Gardiner, Jackie Meade, Will Meade, and Nico Williams into active membership at PVPC. Please be in prayer with all of them and plan to be with us on Palm Sunday!

PVPC had busy months in January and February and we are using our newsletter’s Mission Highlight

this month to thank everyone who volunteered and/or donated money, materials, or food to the

effort.

Mission: Comfort happened on two Sundays in January, the 19th

& 26th

. After worship, close to

thirty people gathered in the Family Life Center gym each Sunday for a light lunch of soup and

sandwiches and got to work on stuffing pillows for post-operation cancer patients and tying fleece

blankets together for the unhoused. It was a time of fellowship and mission as we met our goal of

making 50 blankets and 50 pillows.

Our inaugural Highpoint Charitable Services Winter Coat Collection began in late January and

finished up on Sunday, February 9th

. We collected and delivered 54 Jackets, 16 pairs of gloves/

mittens, 13 Hats, 10 Scarves, 1 muff, and 1 pair of snow pants!

Thanks for reaching out through these two congregational mission efforts, PVPC!
