This week I went to a funeral and a wedding, separated by only
a few days. The funeral was that of a guy I used to work with
as a buildings surveyor many years ago. He was only 58 years
old and had just taken early retirement in 2016 when he was
diagnosed with a very aggressive brain tumour. He underwent all sorts of
treatments and two operations but sadly, to no avail. His funeral was at
King’s Church in Little Lever and the place was packed; not even standing
room. His pastor and his family gave wonderful tributes to his character,
his strong determination to battle his illness, his selflessness in the face of
difficulty and his absolute, unshakeable certainty that if he succumbed to
the cancer, he would go to be with his Saviour. I too am also absolutely
convinced that he is now perfectly happy and at peace in the place we
Christians call ‘home’.
The wedding, of course, was my son Noel’s wedding. It was great! I
could tell you about the lovely food, the great entertainment, the happy
conversations, the dancing, the laughter and the fun. All that, and more,
went to make an unforgettable couple of days. But the truth is, even if it
had poured down and Noel had got married with just the bare essentials, it
would have been just as fantastic because there’s nothing better than seeing
your children happy and settled and enjoying life to the full.
From first cry to final breath, we are all on our personal life journey. There
will be up’s and down’s, twists and turns, laughter and a few tears along the
way. One day we find ourselves celebrating the life of a Christian friend
gone to be with the Lord and a day or two later, celebrating the happiness
of a cherished son and his beautiful new wife.
And God is at both the funeral and the wedding. He was with my old pal as
he passed from this life into eternity, carried there in the arms of his
Saviour and He was with his family as they struggled to say their final
‘goodbyes’.
He was also at the wedding. He was there rejoicing with us, celebrating the
love that was palpable all around us.
No matter where life leads, no matter the journey we have to face, Jesus

depending on which generation we belong to. I hope you find it
amusing.
A young man of 15 on a placement from his school visits an old people’s nursing home. He chats to
Ada, a woman aged 81. His assignment is to get to know Ada and to write a short account of how
she views her life in the home. This is a snippet of their conversation.
Ada is sat in the lounge when Luke arrives. She appears asleep but is pretending in
order to avoid her mid-morning medication.
“Hi Ada, it’s Luke. Are ye awake?”
“Just resting my eyes, Love, just resting my eyes.”
“Why is there something wrong with ‘em?”
“No, not at all. It’s just that my tablets make me feel a bit mazy so I’m kidding ‘um
I’m asleep”
“What’s ‘ mazy’ then?”
“You young ‘uns don’t know nothing do ya? It means a bit sick .”
“Oh, that’s good, thought for a minute it was something ‘orrible.” Mum just bought
me a new jacket and that’s a bit sick too.”
Ada stares at Luke with pity and says, “Never mind Love, just wear it now and then to
please her.”
Changing the subject, Luke asks what Ada’s having for lunch, knowing that food is
usually a good topic of conversation.
“It’s Tuesday, so most likely it’ll be liver and onions, one of my favourites.” I used to
hate liver when I was a girl. The dinner-ladies always made me eat it though. What
are you havin’ Luke?”
“Not liver and onions,” he says with a shiver. “I like NORMAL English food like
Pizza and kebabs. Tonight mum’s making us sweet and sour.”
“Sweet what and Sour what?” asks a bemused Ada.
“Don’t know what she puts in it, do I. Chicken I think and a jar of Uncle Ben’s.”
“Who’s your Uncle Ben? You haven’t mentioned him before.” Is he coming to supper
as well? And, just so you know young man, that other stuff isn’t English. It’s foreign.
You should have a nice curry instead; now that’s good English food.”
“Oh ye, I like curry, that’s proper, that is.”
“Proper what?” asks Ada.
“Just, err, proper” replies Luke.
At that moment a young nurse walks past. “She’s fit” comments Luke without
thinking.
“Yes” agrees Ada. “It’ll be all that lifting she does.”

A few people have asked to see photos of Noel’s and Sarah’s wedding. Sorry I
have no actual photographs to show (as seems to be the modern way) but I have
these that are published electronically on Noel’s Facebook page.
Our thanks to all for your kind
interest. We had a wonderful two
days.

It was hard, getting over my addiction to the Hokey Cokey, but I’ve turned myself around, and that’s what it’s all about!
Hard to turn ourselves around when we find we’re heading in the wrong direction, but with God in charge, all things are possible.
