needs of Chinese students. In-structions are in both languages and pronunciation guides have been supplemented.

Chinese school students can use Deutsch international as prepara-tion for the Zertifikat Deutsch, a qualification for which there is considerable interest.

Cornelsen, together with the educational publishing house Jiangsu, has tailored the course-book series Deutsch international to the needs of Chinese students. The cooperation partner Jiangsu Education Publishing House is a

state-owned publisher in the pro-vincial capital Nanjing and is one of the leading general education schoolbook publishers in China. In September 2006, the Chinese edition of Deutsch international

was officially introduced in state schools throughout China. The series was developed especially for adolescents and is based on the latest educational theories. Vocabulary, grammar and spea-king are presented via everyday situations, thus placing particu-lar emphasis on the acquisition of learning strategies and the development of independent learning.

In China there is a growing trend away from the traditional teacher-centred classroom and towards learner-centred lessons. For this kind of teaching the concept and structure of Deutsch international is of great help. During the adaptation, the series was also tailored to the particular

Effective Lesson Planning – New Multimedia Tools for TrainersTeachers nowadays have a wealth of media and materials at their disposal for optimum lesson planning. This preparation using various media and formats still requires a considerable amount of coordination and time. New interactive lesson planners now offer teachers a clear, compact and convenient means of simplifying and improving efficiency in day-to-day work.

We would like to demonstrate the possibilities offered by interac-tive lesson planning using lesson planners from the publications First Choice (English for Adults) and studio d (German as a Foreign Language for Adults).

Clearly structured and easy to useThe course pack with integra-ted supplementary materials and tools forms the core in each case. The main menu of First Choice offers the menu items Les-son planner, Tools, Materials and

Teacher development. Materials offers an overview of and quick access to all photocopiable temp-lates and listening texts as well as links to free material on the First Choice website.

Time-saving navigation between textbook pages and media With a click on Lesson plan-ner, the appropriate page of the coursebook appears on the left-hand side of the screen. Parallel to this, related (media) pages can be accessed on the right-hand side. A click on the tab Commen-tary accesses the lesson procedu-re notes. Vocabulary links to the new lexis for the unit, and Key reveals solutions to exercises. Ex-tras offers a wealth of additional exercise options. The correspon-ding supplementary materials are also saved here and are ready for printing out. A real treat can be found under Audio: the individu-al listening materials relating to a unit can be played and the script

designed supplementary materi-al. With a few clicks, teachers can produce exercises such as letter, word or sentence mixes from any suitable text. Gapfill exercises and crossword puzzles can also be produced in no time at all.

displayed on screen. studio d also offers direct access to the video material.

Facilitation of enriched and holistic learningIn addition, there is a collection of useful tools, such as a dictiona-ry which gives not only a transla-tion but also an example sentence and acts as a primary vocabulary resource. The Worksheet genera-tor has proved to be particularly useful for preparing individually

Bilingual teaching – CLIL in the German ContextAs the importance of CLIL – Content and Language Integra-ted Learning – continues to grow all over Europe, the last twelve months have been a good time for the English Department at Cornelsen to step back and take a new look at developments in this area and what consequences they can have for the development of the Cornelsen program.

This was done in some detail with international participati-on when Cornelsen hosted the annual Language conference of the EEPG (European Educa-tional Publishers Group) at the Cornelsen Publishing House in April 2006. The theme of the conference was Developments and Opportunities in CLIL.

Europe’s commercial and indus-trial involvement at a global level and the expansion of the Europe-an Commission have accelerated these processes in many countries across the continent.European Commision research** shows that only three EU coun-tries have no CLIL provision in their schools.

The reasons are simple and ob-vious – as more students become more proficient in English at an earlier age, it becomes ineffective to continue to teach “only” the language. Thus at secondary level English can become the langua-ge of instruction for teaching at least some of the other subjects in the timetable. This English is strongly user-oriented and prag-

matic. The focus shifts strongly towards effective spoken and written discourse and away from linguistic finesse. Thus it reflects the way English is used in the real and adult world.

In German secondary schools there are now an estimated 120,000 pupils per school year doing some form of subject learning in a foreign language (Grades 7-10). The large majority is doing this in English, although French is also on the timetable in many schools.

The key subjects for English in Germany are Geography and History – although Biology is on the increase. In the early 1990’s a large number of schools

The development of CLIL/Bilin-gual teaching is closely connected to the enormous expansion of English as a global language and to the increasingly early ages from which English is taught in most countries around the world. Re-cent studies – most significantly that undertaken by the British linguist David Graddol on behalf of the British Council* – estimate that future language teaching re-quirements for older students and adults will in fact decrease over the next 20-30 years. This is because people are learning Eng-lish earlier and because its use as a lingua franca between many dif-ferent countries – and especially between non-native speakers – is transforming English into a basic skill for almost everybody.

line bilingual program which will offer bilingual teachers a broad range of downloadable materials from simple worksheets to more elaborate lessons, as well as other resources. The most significant develop-ment recently has been the intro-duction of “bilingual modules”. This means the expansion of the use of English for teaching some parts of the curricula of other subjects through English – but in all classes, not just in bilingual streams. So less of the curriculum of, say, geography, is done in Eng-lish – perhaps just one or two to-pics from the curriculum per year – but it is done by all.

This makes the potential market more attractive as it is larger, but calls for a different approach. Material on offer must be more flexible. There is little scope for larger textbooks in English. But topic-based material on a range of themes seems to be a promi-sing area. This is the focus of our online development.

We have also asked ourselves – and discussed the issue at the EEPG conference in April – of joint development of materials in English between publishers from several companies. Surely the key topic areas of many sub-jects must be similar in many cur-ricula? And the English version of such subject-based topics is indeed very similar. We are very keen in looking in to this kind of development

introduced bilingual programs – ie teaching some subjects in English from grade 7 onwards. Most schools have done this on the basis of forming special bilingual classes, so-called bi-lingual streams. These systems have been very effective and are still successfully in operation to-day. It was for these groups that Cornelsen originally developed the bilingual geography books Around the World (Volumes 1 and 2) and the history titles Spot-light on History (Volumes 1 and 2). The program was not develo-ped further because the number of bilingual streams has not in-creased greatly and thus the to-tal number of students remained small in terms of successful ma-terial development.

The developments outlined above however have enlivened the deve-lopments once more and led to the reworking of our existing pro-gram and the development of new titles. We are most excited about the development of our new on-

educational publications, who of-fers valuable assistance to teachers in their everyday work. Almost all of Dr. Meyer’s publications have appeared in Cornelsen Scriptor. Hilbert Meyer comes from a family of teachers. His father, grandfather, brothers, sisters, wife and sisters-in-law all trained in this profession, so it was no surprise that Hilbert Meyer also chose this path. After his school-leaving examination in 1961 and degree at the Teacher Training College in Oldenburg he taught mainly primary school children

for almost three years. His dis-sertation was later printed in his book Türklinkendidaktik. This experience also made an impression on Hilbert Meyer in relation to his later university career. He learnt how to over-come initial problems and saw how a clear structure provides many opportunities for produc-tive learning. From 1967 to 1972 he studied for a doctorate at the Freie Uni-versität Berlin and (for his major) at the University of Münster. In 1972 Hilbert Meyer gained his doctorate of philosophy under the well-known educationalist Herwig Blankertz with a thesis on curriculum development. After three years spent working for the culture ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia he took over the professorship of school edu-cation at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, where he still teaches. Hilbert Meyer writes his books, which pursue ambitious educa-tional goals, in everyday school language. Clarity, ease of com-prehension and humour are fea-tures of his texts. This is also the secret of his exceptional success as an author. The total circulation of his books amounts to roughly 950,000 copies. His books have been translated into Italian, Cro-atian, Japanese, Swedish, Slove-nian and Danish.

The following books by Professor Meyer have appeared in Cornelsen Scriptor:

The textbooks which publishing houses develop for classroom use are only one aspect of imparting knowledge. The way in which teachers present the material and make it understandable is also a significant factor. Teacher trai-ning provides an important foun-dation for preparing teachers for this task. The challenges faced by teachers in their day-to-day work, however, are far more complex than could be covered completely in an initial teacher training pro-gramme. On this page we would like to introduce Prof. Dr. Hilbert Meyer, the author of numerous
