PRODUCTION IN THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2019
Total volume of corn production in the MIMAROPA Region was est imated at about
12,654 metr ic tons in October-December 2019. The region ranked fourteenth among
16 corn producing regions in the country.

Among provinces in MIMAROPA, Palawan got the largest share of 5,601 metric tons
or 44.3 percent on the production of corn for the fourth quarter of 2019. Occidental
Mindoro fol lowed with 4,440 metr ic tons or 35.1 percent, while Oriental Mindoro
posted a total of 2,008 metric tons or 15.9 percent of the total corn production in the
region. Romblon and Marinduque lagged behind with a combined share of 4.8
percent or a total of 605 metric tons of corn.

Corn produced in the MIMAROPA Region were predominantly yel low during fourth
quarter of 2019, which was 66.7 percent or 8,435 metric tons of the total volume of
corn production in the region. Corns produced in Oriental Mindoro , Palawan, and
Occidental Mindoro were predominantly yel low with the corresponding share of 95.3
percent, 68.7 percent, and 58.6 percent to the total corn product ion in the ir
respect ive provinces. Meanwhile, corns produced in Marinduque and Romblon were
predominant ly white with 78.4 percent and 95.0 percent share to the regional corn
product ion in their respective province.

Volume of corn production slightly increase by 0.4 percent
Total corn production in the region of 12,654 metric tons in the fourth quarter of 2019
was 0.4 percent or about 45 metric tons higher than 12,609 metric tons of produced
corn during the same quarter in 2018. The increase in corn product ion was due to
the boosts in the production lead by Occidental Mindoro with 438 metr ic tons or 10.9
percent higher than 4,002 metric tons during October -December 2018.

In terms of the total volume of product ion within MIMAROPA by type of corn, the
product ion of yellow decreased by 12.6 percent, from 9,651 metric tons to 8,435
metric tons dur ing the fourth quarter of 2019. Meanwhile, the product ion of white
corn boosted from 2,958 metric tons to 4,219 metric tons or about 42.6 percent
higher compared to the same per iod of 2018 .

Total corn area harvested decreases by 0.3 percent
Total area harvested for all types of corn in MIMAROPA during the fourth quarter of 2019 declined by 13 hectares or 0.3 percent lower compared to its total area harvested from the same quarter in 2018.
This decl ine was due to the cutback of 359 hectares or 16.8 percent in Palawan’s total area harvested from 2,138 hectares in the fourth quarter of 2018 down to 1,779 in same period in 2019.

Area harvested for yel low corns in October-December 2019 shrank to 2,349
hectares. This was 13.1 percent or 353 hectares lower than the total area harvested
of 2,702 hectares in the same period last year. In contrast , white corn’s total area
harvested of 1,862 hectares in the fourth quarter of 2019 posted a 22.3 percent or
340 hectares from 1,522 hectares in the same per iod last year.

Corn yield remains at 3.0 metric tons per hectare
During the fourth quarter of 2019, the average corn yield in the MIMAROPA Region
was posted at 3.0 metric tons per hectare.

Occidental Mindoro posted the highest corn yield in the region with 3.2 metric tons
per hectare. I t was fol lowed by Palawan and Oriental Mindoro with 3. 1 metric tons
per hectare and 3.0 metric tons per hectare , respect ively. The yield of these
provinces exceeded the regional average yield.
Meanwhile, Marinduque showed an increase in yield by 5.1 percent or 0.1 metric tons
per hectare from 1.4 metric tons per hectare during fourth quarter of 2018 to
1.5 metric tons per hectare of the same period in 2019. In contrast, the decl ine on
the average corn yield was observed in the provinces of Oriental Mindoro and
Romblon. Corn yield product ion in Oriental Mindoro declined by 1.6 percent or 0.05
metric tons lower than its corn yield production of 3.05 metric tons per hectare in
the same quarter of 2018. Romblon incurred a decrease of 9.4 percent or 0.2 metric
tons per hectare from its corn yield of 1.9 metric tons per hectare in
the fourth quarter of 2018.
