400 Creative Kids Compete Glens Falls, March 9, 2015 – The Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES En-richment Resource Center is pleased to present the Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournamenton Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Glens Falls High School. The event starts at 8 a.m. and culmi-nates with an Awards Ceremony at 4 p.m. Snow date for the event is Sunday, March 15. Spec-tators are welcome to attend.63 teams representing a total of 400 students from 26 schools (elementary school through highschool) will demonstrate creativity and ingenuity as they present a solution to one of five long-term problems, in skit form, within eight minutes. Students have diligently prepared solutions for these mind-bending problems posed by Odysseyof the Mind:· Runaway ʻTrainʼ: Teams design, build, and operate one or more vehicles that travel on tracksand make stops at different stations without touching the floor. While traveling between stations, the vehicles must overcome obstacles such as moving uphill or towing something. · Experiencing Technical Difficulties: Teams design, build, and demonstrate various devices thatresolve technical failures while completing specific tasks such as ringing a bell, moving an object, etc. All of the devices must be powered by rubber bands. · Classics…Pandoraʼs Box: Teams turn a Greek myth into a video game. One character will playthe multi-level game, which includes three evils that escape Pandoraʼs Box, a power meter thatrepresents the gamerʼs health, and a solution that releases hope into the world. • Lose Your Marbles: Teams design, build, and test a balsa wood structure that will balance andsupport as much weight as possible. Teams will incorporate weight placement and “losing yourmarbles” into the theme of the performance. · Silent Movie: Teams create and present a performance starring a director character that pro-duces a silent movie featuring a humorous villain who commits three silly acts of villainy. Teamswill rely on music, played on a team-created instrument, to convey the story. Each team must also perform in a “spontaneous problem,” where they solve a new challenge

on the spot. Winners of the Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament will go on to the New York StateOdyssey of the Mind Competition on April 11, 2015 at SUNY Binghamton. State winners willmove on to World Finals at Michigan State University May 20-23, 2015.The Regional Odyssey of the Mind event will also feature interactive booths in STEM Careers

from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The following programs will have a presence in the Glens Falls MiddleSchool cafeteria: New Visions Engineering, SUNY Adirondack Career Academy, SUNY Collegeof Nanoscale Science and Engineering, WSWHE BOCES STEM Academy and STEM IntegrationProgram. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-

solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Students have spent monthsof their free time tackling these problems as well as developing teamwork skills, independentstudy, friendships, confidence, and most importantly – their problem-solving abilities. They learnnew things and utilize their strengths to solve the problem. Teams also learn how to budget moneysince there is a cost limit to each problem. Odyssey of the Mind teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended prob-

lems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn to identify challenges and think cre-atively to solve those problems. They are free to express their ideas and suggestions withoutfear of criticism. The creative problem-solving process rewards thinking "outside of the box.” Formore information visit www.odysseyofthemind.com or www.wswheboces.org/GT.cfm

WARREN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETYMarch Program

When: Wednesday March 18, 2015 7PM – 9PMWhere: City Hall – Ridge St., Glens Falls,

3rd Floor Meeting RoomTopic: Researching the Feeder Canal

“My research into the families who worked on the Glens FallsFeeder Canal grew out of the confluence of two long-term inter-ests: family history on the one hand, and spotlighting marginalpopulations on the other.  I discovered one of my children had anancestor who was a boatman.  I was unfamiliar with this occupa-tion in Glens Falls.  As I researched him I uncovered a whole areaof Glens Falls history: not only did I not know anything about theimportance of the canal system in the economic development ofGlens Falls, but no one else seemed to have anything to sayabout it either.  So for the past eight years I have been digginginto the canal and canal men. This program will take you alongon my journey.”

MAPLE CHASES AWAY OLD MAN WINTER“Deep, mealy snow and cold have slowed us down, but the taps are in, waiting for sap and gettingready for Thurman Maple Days.” So says Randy Galusha of Toad Hill Maple Farm & organizer ofMaple Days in Thurman, describing the nail-biting period our regionʼs maple producers seem toface most years, as they wait for winter to release its grasp & the sap to rise in the maples. No onein the North Country needs to be told how cold it has been, & it was into this cold that the men andwomen of maple had to sally forth to get the tapping done. Galushaʼs summary, “Tapping was kindof brutal,” seems an understatement.Tapping accomplished, they await the perfect temperatures required for sap to flow in the maple

trees – freezing nights followed by days above 32 degrees Farenheit. Seasoned sugar makers, thefolks at Toad Hill, Valley Road, Hidden Hollow & Adirondack Gold maple farms, have learned to rollwith the unpredictability of the season, confident that the maple nectar will flow & maple syrup, cream, and candies will again line the shelves of their gift shops by the time guests come callingduring Thurman Maple Days, March 14-15, 21-22, & 28-29. Although general event hours for tours, tasting, talks, demonstrations and shopping are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Valley Road opens for pancakebreakfasts at 9 am, serving until 1pm “Weʼve got the griddle warming,” say Mike Hill, co-owner.Cheryl Kenyon, co-owner of Adirondack Gold, is quick to remind visitors that “maple syrup isnʼt justfor pancakes anymore.” Helping to celebrate the season with open houses are Martinʼs Lumberwith Maple slabs, wooden wares and interactive craft demonstrations for all ages, Peru Llama farmwith an introduction to llama thinking, author-signed books and a chance to try out snowshoes, andNettle Meadow Farmʼs goat and sheep dairy, where farm tours are planned, weather permitting.Says Nettle Meadow co-owner Sheila Flanagan, “We're hoping for some nice weather so that cus-tomers will get a chance to meet our newest group of baby lambs and kids.” The hosts look forwardto this event. As Wini Martin of Martinʼs Lumber says, “We love sharing our interests with all whostop by. We look forward to seeing friends and neighbors who come year after year, and also tovisiting with new guests and getting to know them.” Shops are open at all sites, so guests may takehome a little bit of Thurman Maple Days. This first weekend of Maple Days is highlighted by the annual Thurman Maple Sugar Party, an all-you-can-eat buffet crowned with dessert of old-fashioned maple jack wax. The Warren County Ram-blers will provide lively music and youʼll be served by the friendliest folks around. Proceeds fromthe dinner benefit the American Cancer Society for the 56th year. Dinner begins at 4pm & continuesuntil all are served. See www.ThurmanMapleSugarParty.com. Other extras include the Upper Hud-son Maple Queen, Jessica Benoit, who will greet guests at Valley Road Maple Farm on each dayfrom 9 – 1, & a noon presentation on Sunday,

Pick up a map and guide at town hall or any site, or download one atwww.ThurmanMapleDays.com. Coinciding with Maple Days this year is sister event “Sweet Maple Menu Days,” in which area

eateries feature special entrees, beverages and desserts created with Thurman maple products.Palette tempting treats like maple barbecued wings, maple glazed cinnamon buns, maple cheese-cake, salmon fillet brushed with maple syrup and a whole grain mustard and baked with an applepecan crust, maple crème brulee & a maple bourbon martini. FIVE QUICK WAYS TO UPGRADE YOURHOME FOR RESALE

(NAPSI)—Whether youʼre considering cashing in on yourequity, downsizing, trading up, moving for a change ofscenery or relocating for better prospects, a few smart in-vestments and improvements can help your home standout from the competition so you get top dollar. Even ifyouʼre not planning on moving anytime soon, these strate-gies can maximize your homeʼs value and increase itsmarketability:

• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think youʼll have a fewyears before you move, work on your landscaping now togive plants time to mature. Look for easy-care perennialssuch as hostas, which multiply on their own. If you haveless time, you can still achieve a quick makeover bypower washing paths and siding, painting or upgradingyour front door and keeping the lawn watered andweeded.

• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustmentscan help buyers recognize whatʼs great about your home.Swap outdated fixtures, remove wallpaper and give every-thing a deep clean. Replacements donʼt have to be top ofthe line; they just need to eliminate hang-ups for potentialbuyers.

• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably wonʼtrecoup the cost of a full kitchen renovation but smallerprojects such as upgrading appliances and painting or re-finishing cabinets can modernize the space.

• Refreshing rooms with neutral paint. This is a time-hon-ored tip for a reason. While seeing your favorite bold hueson the walls makes you happy, potential buyers may notagree. A fresh coat of neutral paint can help them envisiontheir own belongings in the space.

• Focusing on energy efficiency. The right energy-smartupgrades can assure buyers theyʼre seeing an efficienthome where utility bills can be minimized. Adding insula-tion to the attic and walls can make a dramatic improve-ment in many homes. Consider the windows as well.Adding a heat-rejecting window film such as 3M Sun Con-trol Window Film can reduce cooling costs and typicallydoes not change the windowsʼ appearance. Since thewindow film can reject up to 99 percent of UV rays, it canprotect the investment you made in your hardwood floors, rugs, window treatments, furniture and artwork.
