Dubrovnik (Ragusa in Latin and Italian) was the capital of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa), a strong and powerful maritime city-state that existed from 1358 to 1808. Under the protection of the Ottoman Empire, Dubrovnik became one of the wealthiest Mediterranean republics in the 15th and 16th century, based on commerce and trade. After a strong earthquake in 1667 much of the city was destroyed and when Napoleon entered Dubrovnik in 1806, there was little resistance. The Republic of Ragusa was officially dissolved in 1808.

HISTORIC Dubrovnik

The Republican Constitution of Dubrovnik was strictly aristocratic with people divided into three classes: nobility, citizens, and artisans or plebeians. Marriages between different classes were forbidden.

The government consisted of Grand Council and the Small Council and the Senate. The head of the state was the Rector, elected for a term of office for one month.

Dubrovnik was the most significant maritime and mercantile center of the Adriatic, alongside Venice and Ancona. In the 16th century, the Dubrovnik merchant navy matched world levels with its quality fleet of 180 to 200 ships.During its peak Dubrovnik had 30,000

peoplethatlivedbythecitymotto“Nonbeneprototolibertasvenditurauro“,(Latinfor“Libertyisnotsoldforallthegold”).

Although the Split area was earlier inhabited by the Greek colonies, the Emperor Diocletian should be considered its first citizen and founder, raising his luxurious villa of around 300 square meters near the great city of Salona in 293 AD, only to retire from the Roman throne within its walls after building it for ten years.

What gondoliers mean to Venice, barkajoli mean to Zadar! For over 800 years they have been connecting the two ends of Zadar´s harbour with their small rowboats in any weather conditions, and in so doing have saved the time of their faithful passengers. This tradition has been passed on from father to son for centuries and has survived despite the challenges of modern times.

ZADAR’S best sights, stories & events

Welcome Drink? Zadar’s Maraschino is our suggestion Watching the most beautiful sunset’s in the world, exactly by the top attractions of Zadar. The newest world-class instalation Greeting to the Sun and listening to the unique sound of the Sea organ. This is the nr. 1 & utmost Zadar’s experience.

Zadar will always manage to surprise and delight you

with its monuments, history and stories of the somewhat forgotten parts of its past, from the second you arrived until almost the very moment you are leaving.

A love story Villa Attilia was built in 1901 by a local artist, painter and historian Giovanni Smirich (Zadar, 1842-1929). After his wife’s death in 1918, he ordered the building of the Sphinx as a memorial to his beloved wife. There are not too many sphinxes in this part of Europe left, but this is the biggest of all. It is also a very special Sphinx since it was built in memory of a beloved woman: it is said that it grants love wishes.

Sweet workshopEvening sweet workshop with the famous Zadar’schocolatier Dubravko Vitlov who is making fresh, handmade chocolate pralines with local marasca cherries.
