PUB LETTER

FROMTHEchairman

It’s March. So we have six more months. And how many debates have there been so far? I must tell you that I do miss Herman Cain. His 9-9-9

plan was so brilliant. And Michelle Bachman. Michelle was lovely. She spoke well. She’s attractive. I really didn’t get her husband, but who am I to judge?

Now we are down to Newt, Mitt, Rick and Ron. The Republican version of the Beatles. I can see Mitt as Paul, Newt as John, Rick as George and, of course, Ron as Ringo. I can see Mitt singing...

“Can’t buy me love, love,

Can’t buy me love. I’ll-buy-

you-diamond-rings my

friend, if-it-makes-you-vote-

for-me, I’ll get you anything

my friend, if-you-cast-your-

vote-properly, Cause all I

care about is the money, but

money can’t buy me love…

or votes.”

”I also can see Newt belting out “I am the Walrus.” “I-am-he-as-you-are-me-

and-Mitt-is-me-and-I-am-

he. New-newt-achoo, new-

newt-achoo, I am the Walrus,

I am the Egg Man, I am the

Newt man”. I am trying to add some levity

to a serious discussion. More and more people are frightened about the future of the United States. We have candidates on both the left and right that are complete ideologues. Are the Republicans correct? Are the Democrats correct? The answer to both questions is yes.

Should the very rich pay additional money in taxes, even if it is just for a 5 year period, with the goal to balance our federal budget?

Should we develop the pipeline to become energy effi cient and create hundreds of thousands of jobs?

Should we dramatically lower

federal spending and cut waste?Should we attempt to take money

out of politics?Should we become tough with

China and our other trading partners to create a more equitable trade policy?

Should we enforce our current regulations instead of creating new regulations that we do not have resources to enforce?

Should we place additional resources to train our citizens that are currently receiving unemployment benefi ts?

You may be reading this article and asking yourself the question, “I am one person. Can I really make a difference”? The answer is yes. You probably know a politician or two. Collectively, we have power. Today our politicians and candidates have one goal in mind – to be reelected. Therefore, they feel the need to be hard right or hard left. The trouble is that we live in a world of compromises. We do it in our business and personal life every day.

When did compromise become such a toxic word?

We all know that politics start locally. We can have a voice and a strong one at that. My hope is that you stand up with me and tell our politicians that unless they start compromising and getting things done, they cannot count on our money anymore.

I don’t enjoy writing about politics because it can be so divisive. However I do feel that we need to raise our voices now so that our children can continue to live in the greatest country on the face of this earth. And while “Yesterday” all of our troubles seem so far away, “Imagine” what we can accomplish if we work together with a smart, effi cient government that truly puts Americans fi rst instead of politicians fi rst.

March 2012

As we move into the third month of the year many of us are looking forward to either basketball’s March Madness, Spring Break or St. Patrick’s Day. Or maybe all three!

As for me, I am excited to have two South Florida professional teams in the playoff hunt in their respective sports. The Panthers are hanging in there and look to make the NHL playoffs after many years of coming up short and the Heat look to return to the NBA Finals and bring home another championship. You Gotta Believe!

Out of the state legislature come the new districts for our representatives and no casinos. I guess they didn’t agree with the idea of – “if you build it, they will come!” Speaking of a new facility, the Marlins get ready to open up their

new home-complete with a retractable roof--in the weeks ahead. Let’s hope they fi eld a team many will want to watch – and potentially win a championship again. You can always dream big!

As for doing things big, Facebook is planning their IPO (Initial Public Offering) in the months ahead. Word on Wall Street is they may have the biggest IPO ever with over $100 billion in value – yes that’s billion with a “B”. Not to be outdone in the media, Apple is planning on launching the new I-Pad3 this month. Their company may surpass the $500 billion level in market capitalization. Way to go Steve. You left a big mark on the world.

With St. Patrick’s Day on a Saturday this month, many will be celebrating all night long. You can check out our “Top 10 places to go” in this issue for going for the green with family and friends alike. Being half Irish, I am sure to be partaking in the festivities somewhere, so Erin go Bragh – Gaelic translated as Ireland Forever!

Lastly, I pay tribute to a friend, fellow Philadelphian and former South Florida resident, Angelo Dundee, who left us last month. He was best known for training Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali. I was fortunate to have met Angelo on several occasions at events and even had coffee with him a few times at our local Starbucks, when he lived in the city. Compassionate, cordial, humble and a real gentleman are just a few words to describe this

very special person. Boxing and the world alike are better because he lived!

Have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day & Remember

to Make Each Day Count!

As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle ™

The Coral Springs-Parkland Rotary hosts this annual event to benefi t the children of our community served by Family

Central, Inc. and The Coral Springs - Parkland Rotary Foundation.

According to Rotarian and 2012 Tournament Chair Andy Baranowski, “This tournament is the highlight of our year, and we have an awesome time putting it on.” “This is a fun outing on a great course,

with the proceeds benefi ting people right here in our own community. Our wonderful sponsors and benefactors are generous. The golfers are friends and members of the local business community who come out year after year to support us, and we try to show them a terrifi c time.”

This year’s primary tournament benefi ciaries are Family Central, a comprehensive early childhood education and family support organization serving over 130,000 children in South Florida and The RCCSP Foundation, Inc. providing charitable support both locally and globally, as well as 6 annual collegiate scholarships for local students. Additionally, tournament proceeds help to support a number of youth organizations, including Challenger Little League.

For six years (1997-2002) the PGA TOUR`S Honda Classic called Heron Bay home. It now is the permanent site of the prestigious and historic Dixie Amateur, one of the top-ranked amateur tournaments in the world.

Golf packages begin at only $100 per player and include greens fees, beverages, golfer gifts, goody bag, awards dinner, door prize and more.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Local businesses and organizations can purchase

advertising space in the Course Guide starting at $25 as well as Tee or Green signs beginning at $100. For non-golfers who want to join the fun, dinner tickets are just $30.

The Rotary Club looks forward to its third decade of successful charity golf events, and hopes to see you there on Friday, March 30th. Individual golfer, foursome, and corporate sponsorship packages are available. Donors, sponsors, and avid golfers alike can download information and registration materials from the website.

Henderson Behavioral Health (HBH) is the oldest and largest, community-based not-for-profi t behavioral healthcare system in South Florida. Since 1953 Henderson has helped hundreds of thousands of children, adults and families. Last year alone, Henderson provided over 600,000 services to 21,323 individuals. We strive to be a “community problem solver,” and have focused our efforts on Florida’s most urgent behavioral health and human services needs. In addition to providing a full-range of evidence-based behavioral healthcare services to all ages, Henderson is also committed to creating and managing a system of housing for adults and children.

Henderson operates over 650 housing units including supportive housing, permanent housing for

those with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, a safe-haven and emergency homeless shelter, residential treatment and group homes.

For 59 years, Henderson Behavioral Health has helped people in South Florida discover new beginnings in their lives. By providing the necessary supports and services, dreams are realized.

One example is John, an 18 year old man who was a foster child for several years in one of Henderson’s group homes. He dreamt of the time when he would graduate from high school and begin to live the life of a young adult. A young adult who has the things in life we all want; friends, a family, a job and meaningful activities. Thanks to Henderson’s support and John’s hard work; John is

now living independently, has friends, and attends a local college.

Thanks to the generous people in South Florida, Henderson was able to help John become an independent young adult. One of the ways Henderson raises money to help people like John is through the annual gala. The organizers hope you will join them for this fun event being held on Saturday, March 31, at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, honoring Nova Southeastern University President Dr. George L. Hanbury II, and Chancellor Ray Ferrero Jr., J.D. To purchase a sponsorship, an ad, tickets, or to learn more, please contact Andria Nolan, Director of Development at 954-777-1624 or [email protected]. She created the fi rst “Bachelorette” wedding aired on ABC when Trista and Ryan Sutter tied the knot. She’s organizing parties, weddings, corporate events – even b’nai mitzvot at such locations as the Beverly Hills Hotel and Sony Studios in California.

So when she was booked to speak at the Jewish Federation of Broward County’s Women’s Philanthropy Bash in May, event organizers knew Mindy would be an A-List draw herself – making the event one to remember.

“Mindy Weiss promises to bring her party-planning insights and a few juicy stories about planning events for the stars,” said Eric B. Stillman, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. “We’re so pleased to have her entertain and motivate the Women’s Philanthropy Division.”

Beyond celebrity clients and made-for-TV weddings, Mindy’s expertise is well known and in demand. She is sought after as a lifestyle expert by such name brands as Starbucks,

Fortunoff, and David’s Bridal. Mindy was listed in The New York Times as one of the nation’s top fi ve wedding planners.

Mindy is not only an event planner but an author, as well, having written The Wedding Book: the Big Book for your Big Day – four years and 400 pages in the making. She is also a philanthropist herself, providing pro bono services for various charities.

In that vein, Mindy will fi nd herself in good company. Open to those making a $500 minimum women’s philanthropy gift to the 2012 Annual Campaign is required, payable through December 31, 2012, event chair Amy Stolberg says that planning the Women’s Philanthropy Bash has been a rewarding way for her and her team to give back to the community.

“It’s very important to me to help improve the lives of Jews in Broward County, the U.S. and Israel,” said Stolberg, a long-time supporter of the Federation and Lion of Judah since

2008. “My role with this Bash helps me to feel that I am doing that. Being a part of the Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation gives me a chance to create lasting friendships, feel empowered and make a difference.”

With its unique speaker, crowd-pleasing theme and tie to philanthropic giving, the Bash is likely to attract newcomers – and delight attendees.

The Women’s Philanthropy Bash will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 with cocktails at 7 and the program at 8. For more information about the event, call Lauren Rickoff at 954-252-6923 [email protected].

AIR AROUND THE CLOCK A/C & APPLIANCE SERVICE Mr. Lang, I don’t normally write letters to companies about their products but I feel compelled to share my experience with the Mitsubishi Split-Type Air Conditioner that you installed for me about 6 months ago. I love it! The Mitsubishi Mr. Slim is the perfect unit for my bedroom; I can super-cool the room in minutes with incredibly flexible airflow direction and fan speed. Also, I can make adjustments from my bedside with the handy remote any time of night or day. Did I mention how quiet the system is? It’s truly impressive! Now the real reason for writing: my allergies have almost disappeared! After living in Florida for 40 years, I was resigned to the fact that my breathing would never be free and clear with all the molds and fungi our climate produces. Well, about a month ago, I realized I could breathe effortlessly through my nose. How can this be? Then it dawned on me, it’s the anti-allergy enzyme filter that I read about in the manual. While Mr. Slim has many great features, improved air quality is such a fantastic benefit that you might want to recommend this system to your customers with allergy issues. It is truly an outstanding air conditioning system. Sincerely, Cynthia from Plantation

JERRY SEINFELD LIVE… BY KEVIN LANE

24 MARCH 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

SEINFELDProbably everyone that is reading this article fl ashes back to a segment of Seinfeld. Probably several! It’s one of those

sit-coms that we can watch over… and over… and over and still laugh out loud. Usually, when Jerry is being interviewed on radio or t.v., the host invariably recounts his or her favorite episode.

Who knew that a kid born in Brooklyn would become one of history’s greatest talents? Although Jerry’s father, Kalman Seinfeld was a sign maker, he was a very funny sign maker according to “the master stand-up comic of his generation.” Jerry grew up in Massapequa, New York. In 1976, he graduated from Queens College, City University New York with a degree in Communication in Theatre. It was during some brief stints in college theatre productions where he developed an interest in stand-up comedy.

While it might sound like a Seinfeld episode, Jerry actually tried out at an open-mic night at New York City’s Catch a Rising Star and it was love at fi rst laugh. Like a lot of comics, he continued to perform at local clubs and Catskill Mountain resorts. This led to a Rodney Dangerfi eld HBO special and alas… a star is born. Well, maybe not that fast. In 1979 he had a small recurring role on the Benson sitcom as “Frankie,” a mail delivery boy who had comedy routines that no one wanted to hear. In fact, not even the producers wanted to hear them, because he was abruptly fi red over “… creative differences.” Seinfeld said that he wasn’t actually told he was fi red, but when he turned up for the read-through session for an episode, he found there was no script for him. Sounds like another episode

from Seinfeld!!Prior to becoming “an

overnight hit,” Jerry made a highly successful appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson at age 27, in 1981. He so impressed Carson and the audience, it lead to regular appearances on that show and others, including Late Night with David Letterman.

Fast forward a few years, 1989 to be exact. Seinfeld created the Seinfeld Chronicles with his good friend Larry David for NBC. The show was later renamed… you guessed it… Seinfeld… to avoid confusion with the short-lived teen sitcom, The Marshall Chronicles. By its fourth season, Seinfeld had become the most popular and successful show on American television. Nine years after it began, the last episode aired in 1998 and has since been in syndication re-runs around the world. Jerry was the only actor to have appeared in every episode. He reportedly turned down $5 million per episode… for 22 episodes to do a tenth season.

One question a lot of fans had was, “… is their life after the Seinfeld sitcom?” The answer is a resounding YES! In his fi rst major foray back into the media since the fi nale of Seinfeld, he co-wrote and co-produced the fi lm Bee Movie, also taking on the lead role of Barry B. Benson. In February 2010, Seinfeld premiered a reality TV series called The Marriage Ref on NBC. Seinfeld directed Colin Quinn in the Broadway show Long Story Short at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York which ran until January 8, 2011.

And now he’s back on the road with the 2012 Jerry Seinfeld Tour which makes a stop at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, March 31st. Another indication of the

popularity of this show business

phenomenon is the fact that there will be two shows, one at 7:00 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m. And if you want to see Jerry… you better call the Broward Center PRONTO… Tickets are selling like the proverbial hot cakes! And well they should… Hailed as “the best comedian of our time” in a Washington Post article by Tom Shales, Seinfeld has an uncanny ability to joke about the little things in life that relate to audiences everywhere.

Actually, an important part of the evening will be a fundraiser for the Broward Center’s arts-in-education and outreach programs. The prestigious affair will begin with a sparkling pre-performance cocktail reception in the Peck Courtyard at 6:00 p.m. followed by a gourmet dinner in the Amaturo Theater - transformed into a multi-level dinner club - at 7:00 p.m. and premium seating in the Au-Rene Theater for the Jerry Seinfeld Live! performance at 9:30 p.m. Chairing the festivities are Marti and Wayne Huizenga, Rose Miniaci, Laura and Charlie Palmer,

SEINFELDMicki and Bernie Peck and Cindy and Ray Rodríguez.

Future plans for the Center include renovations to the theaters as well as new buildings, state-of-the-art

enhancements, new entertainment and hospitality opportunities, expanded programming, greater public access, and increased education activities. An ardent supporter of arts-in-education is Rose Miniaci.

“The Broward Center early on developed a strong partnership with the School Board of Broward County to integrate the arts into the education process. As a result, we offer award-winning programs that serve thousands of students each year – a total of more than 2.4 million in the past 20 years,” said Miniaci. “I’m excited about a future that will touch

the lives of even more children.”The Broward Center’s arts-in-

education programs are broad-based in purpose with activities including Reading Readiness for Head-Start pre-kindergarten children, Reading Residencies for students in Title One schools, SEAS school day performances through the Broward County schools, and Smart Stage Matinees for children outside the public school system.

Underwriters and sponsors include the Mary Jane Harlow Charitable Trust/Mary Short, President, Marti and Wayne Huizenga, and AutoNation, along with BankAtlantic, Exults, Gibraltar Private Bank, Greenspoon Marder, Humana South Florida, Northern Trust, The Pillars Hotel, Publix, Seminole Coconut Creek Casino, Southern Wine & Spirits and Stiles Corporation. Underwriters are Wini and Joe Amaturo, Kristen and Alan Hooper, Hudson Family Foundation, Liz and Kurt Langsenkamp, the Charles L. Palmer Family, Jenny and James Riley, Cindy and Ray Rodríguez, Sandy and Kenny Tate, Christine and Richard Welch, and Patty and Kurt Zimmerman.

The host committee includes Wini and Joe Amaturo, Carol Harrison, Kristen and Alan Hooper, Jeannie and Steve Hudson, Liz and Kurt Langsenkamp, Jenny and James Riley, Lois and John Schmatz, Randi and Mike Short, Jamie and Terry Stiles, Sandy and Kenny Tate, Christine and Richard Welch, and Patty and Kurt Zimmerman.

Leveraging its 20 years of experience, the Broward Center manages the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on

the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Fort Lauderdale’s historic Parker Playhouse, which has experienced a renaissance under the Center’s management, and the beautiful new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The Center also works closely with the City of Miramar in the continued growth of the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark.

For die-hard fans, here’s some Seinfeld Trivia. Jerry is an automobile enthusiast and avid collector and is rumored to own one of the largest Porsche collections in the world. Some trade marks include impeccable neatness, unfl appable confi dence, his favorite hero is Superman and George Wallace was the best man at his wedding.

After Jerry got married, he bought Billy Joel’s house in Amagansett village in the Hamptons for then record-setting price of $32 million and he had a compulsive habit of throwing out the clothes he had traveled with after each road trip. His sister, Carolyn Liebling is his manager.

While we’re not positive where the fi ctional Boca Del Vista condo where Seinfeld’s parents lived is located, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine it was around where Betty Seinfeld lives… which is a secret.

The Broward Center is located at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. For additional information, visit www.BrowardCenter.org. For more information about Jerry Seinfeld Live!, contact the Broward Performing Arts Foundation at 954-468-3289 or [email protected].

OFFERINGAngelsofthe

Offering of the Angels is curated by Antonio Natali, director the world-renowned Uffi zi Gallery in Florence, Italy, and features

tapestries and paintings by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Sandro Botticelli, Parmigianino, Alessandro Allori, Luca Giordano, and Lorenzo Monaco, among many others. The exhibition’s forty-fi ve works portray scenes from the Old Testament, including the Creation of Adam, the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, the Miracle of the Manna, as well as events from the life of Christ, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, the Last Supper, the Crucifi xion, and the Resurrection. Tying together all the subjects is the theme of forgiveness.

Irvin Lippman, the Executive Director of the Museum of Art, said that “Offering of the Angels brings to the Museum of Art and to South Florida a wealth of tapestries and old master paintings that are rarely, if ever, seen in this region. We welcome the generosity of the Uffi zi Gallery in allowing these treasures to travel here. The exhibition’s impressive works of art refl ect, in their fullest expression, the highest points of artistic achievement of Western Civilization.”

The Uffi zi Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world. It is housed in an impressive structure erected between 1560 and 1574

by Cosimo I de’Medici and designed by Giorgio Vasari, a friend of Michelangelo who coined the term Renaissance. It contains one of the greatest collections of paintings and tapestries – many of which were originally commissioned or owned by members of the powerful Medici family.

Offering of the Angels has come to the United States – and premieres at the Museum of Art I Fort Lauderdale – through the efforts and encouragement of the Amici degli Uffi zi, which was established in 1993 to support the Uffi zi Gallery and its programs.

FITNESSARTICLE

Keeping a fi tness routine is hard to do. For many, exercise has become a tough obligation to fulfi ll when it should be a really fun part of your day. I once viewed exercise as a chore and had diffi culty meeting my fi tness goals, but with a fresh approach to the task, I became inspired, and so much so, that I founded

Weston’s newest workout party hot spot, Fitness 54 in Weston Town Center.

The Fitness Party began in my garage with a fun approach to working out. In additional to acquiring the best equipment around, my garage environment included motivating video on large screens and music that soon attracted friends and fi tness pros. Through this passion and garage antics, a new concept in fi tness was born.

My own workout regimen proved to be the answer to years of excuses for fi tness funk. To engage long term, your workout needs to be upbeat, exciting and fun to keep you motivated. Interval training keeps you, your brain and your body guessing, “What’s next?” That is why it is important to switch up your routine.

To engage the participant long term, fi tness classes can, in fact, take the ‘work’ out of workout. When we’re engaged in an environment that we like, for instance, hiking through beautiful scenery, our fi tness benefi t is a byproduct of the fun activity. Similarly, while enjoying the benefi ts of a solid workout, time goes by fast when you are in small group settings, listening to motivating music and watching inspiring videos, with expert coaching to keep you motivated and having a good time. At Fitness 54, for example, the DJ podium and set up bring extra energy and fun to the party.

Exercising in a group environment keeps your morale high and allows for a friendly competition among the crowd. It’s important for everyone to be encouraged to exercise at their own pace, but it is proven that with

support of those around you, one strives to do better. Add the support of experts in exercise, and you’ve got a winning formula for continued success in fi tness.

Like every workout should, a well-organized class must inspire to bring about long lasting results. Exercising in a team atmosphere gives a feeling of camaraderie that works magic and truly motivates everyone.

With New Year’s resolutions subsiding, I know fi tness health becomes more challenging. A fun, party environment helps jump the motivation hurdles and conquer. Besides enjoying the benefi ts of the fun party environment while working out, I will say my top advice is to set aside a time of day you know you cannot make excuses for. Call up a friend so the two of you can motivate one another. Blast the music and switch up your work out to keep it new. You should not run the same mile every day. Be sure to incorporate cardio and strength training – this varied workout will keep you coming back to do more (which is the key), stay in shape and make you stronger.

Fitness 54 is located at 1717 Main Street in Weston, Fla. It is a fi tness center with a fast, fun and fresh approach to exercise. Please visit www.fi tness54.net or call 954-389-3485 for more information.

Spectacular design, world class equipment, live DJ, electro-charged lights, music to make you move, video to inspire. Making fi tness fun. The antidote for the boring workout. Fitness 54 changes everything, including you!

VETERANMAKEOVERThe Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber honored Chief

Arthur Drago for his remarkable 24 year Navy career. Arthur was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba after

9/11 to participate in Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In the wake of the September 11th attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, these operations provided assistance against terrorists. Today, Arthur Drago serves as President of the Chief Petty Offi cers Association of Miami, (CPOA.)

As one of nine military families selected from Dade and Broward, the Fort Lauderdale Chamber’s award earned Arthur a “New Room for the New Year” courtesy of top Interior Design Expert, Joe Fava of Fava Design Group. The Military Room Makeover Program sponsored by the Dania Beach Design District and Luxe Interiors & Design Magazine honors 9 communities and 9 military families with free room makeovers.

The Designer met with Arthur Drago, his wife Gloria, daughters Megan, Natalie and son AJ to discuss redoing their living room for the room makeover project. Arthur’s family took great pleasure in overseeing the remodel plans. Arthur said, “A veteran’s family sacrifi ces a lot. They’re rarely rewarded for what they’ve gone through. It’s meaningful to give this gift to my family.”

The family had been experiencing tough times. Arthur’s wife lost her job. Arthur lost his business and they recently lost a relative. Captivated by the family’s story; Joe decided to design an environment to help change their luck. He expanded the project to combine their dining and living room into a great room.

Fava said, “By opening up their space, positive energy can fl ow freely through their home to give them a fresh start and a positive outlook so great things will come their way.”

Joe’s engaging personality brought inspiration to all.

The Designer got donations from many elite industry names to insure the project was fi t for a king.

It’s hard to tell who’s more excited about the remodel project; the family, designer, Dania Beach Design District or those that donated services and resources to help make the designer’s vision a reality.

Fava said, “The family’s a pleasure to work with. I hope this project gives them a new beginning. It’s been a rewarding experience. I’m inspired by the collaborative efforts of so many to create this unique space for the Drago’s.”

Craig Urbine said, “The Dania Beach Design District is proud to support a program that honors our veterans and showcases amazing talent from the design community.”

J.G bills himself as an adventurer and purveyor of fi ne libations. That intrigues us. In fact, as a fan of adventure of fi ne libations, we just had to check it out. And J.G delivered.

First, the décor is truly amazing. We love the Oscar Wilde saying etched into the walls and we really loved the Guinness.

This is an authentic Irish Pub with its proprietor having studied the art of the Irish Pub in Dublin. The result is an outstanding establishment inspired by legendary Irish pubs.TIP: The owner worked for Diageo-Guinness. Don’t miss the Guinness.

6 RENDEZVOUS WATERFRONT BAR & GRILL2525 Marina Bay Dr. W.Fort Lauderdale, FL

(954) 797-0054

We admit, we’re shallow. At fi rst, we fell for the name. Who doesn’t want a rendezvous?

But when we visited we were impressed. Excellent burgers, good atmosphere, friendly service.

TIP: Sit outside.

7 DA BIG KAHUNA17 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. #380 Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 530-4867

Like the song says—everybody loves the Big Kahuna.

When considering great watering holes, you do need to include a little diversity and Da Big Kahuna provides a respite from the typical bar scene.

Relaxing, tropical and authentically Hawaiian, a visit to Da Big Kahuna is a chance to escape the daily grind.

TIP: You had us at the Kalua Pork.

8 CAROLINA ALE HOUSE2618 Weston RdWeston, FL 33331(954) 217-1233

Carolina is a great place to eat,

drink and watch sports. It’s also a great place to take the family and a good place to unwind with friends. We also like the prices which are reasonable.

TIP: Cowboy salad. Steak and greens—you can feel half good about what your eating.

9 WAXY O’CONNOR’S IRISH PUB & EATERY1095 SE 17 St Fort Lauderdale, FL(954) 828-2755

We’ve been to Waxy’s in Keene, New Hampshire. We’ve been to Waxy’s in Foxborough, Mass (tip don’t root for the Yankees while in Foxborough), but we love the one in our own backyard.

Waxy’s is an authentic Irish bar—classy, fun, and you simply can’t beat the potato leek soup.

TIP: Don’t root for the Yankees in Foxborough. That bears repeating.

10 PARROT LOUNGE911 Sunrise Lane Fort Lauderdale(954) 563-1493

If you appreciate classic Florida watering holes, this is your place. They are a dying breed. But the Parrot is very much alive and a great place to spend St. Patty’s Day.

The drinks are tropical, the location is wonderful and the food is good as well. The Parrot Lounge bills itself as world famous and it is. When it comes to classic bars in Lauderdale—the Parrot is at the top of the list.

TIP: We like the homemade chili. We can be talked into the mozzarella sticks, but we prefer the chili.

BANKPHILANTHROPY

Even during the recent recession and the slow recovery that has followed, many civic and charitable organizations and other non-profi ts have not experienced a downturn in support from the banking industry.

That includes Broward County where large multi-state banks and locally based banks have long been among the leaders in providing fi nancial support and volunteer service by employees.

One example is The Pantry of Broward, which provides food and support services to senior citizens who are in need.

No matter the economic climate, numerous banks have remained important supporters with contributions of money and volunteer work in food drives and other programs, said Catherine “Penny” Loughan, CEO of The Pantry of Broward.

In particular, Loughan said that Bank of America “been our biggest cheerleader.”

Lori Chevy, Bank of America’s market president for Broward County said: “In an effort to make opportunity possible for organizations that address critical social and economic needs like hunger, I am proud the bank has provided support to this outstanding organization.”

Like many other banks, Bank of America bases its decisions on where to spend philanthropic dollars largely on what it sees as the potential impact throughout a local community.

The Pantry of Broward’s impact is over several generations of families because many of its services are for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

Banks generally do not release localized data on their contributions to charitable and civic organizations, schools, hospitals, museums, performing arts centers and various other non-profi ts.

Lynne Wines is president of First Southern Bank and is the current chairman of the United Way of Broward County.

She said First Southern has maintained its levels of community support and that the banking industry has remained a major supporter of the United Way.

First Southern is headquartered in Boca Raton and has two branches in Broward County.

“Maybe some banks have had to cut back a bit on fi nancial support (for non-profi ts),” Wines said. “But I don’t think there have been any reductions in man and woman hours. Bankers realize how much their support is needed.”

The real estate crisis has led to a signifi cant downturn in overall bank earnings, and surviving banks are more tightly monitoring their charitable contributions and other spending.

The nation’s banking industry had a composite net loss of $9.8 billion in 2009 but has since been slowly returning to profi tability, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Banks based in Florida had composite annual net losses between 2008 and 2010 before they began posting quarterly profi ts last year, according to the FDIC.

But many banks are still earning less than prior to the recession and still spending considerable time and money on workouts of problem real estate loans.

One constant factor in good times and bad is that banks’ civic and charitable donations and

services help them comply with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA).

That federal law requires banks to have programs that provide loans and other services to low-income and moderate-income individuals and individuals within their geographic markets.

Another constant is that offi cials of non-profi ts should have precise answers when bankers ask for details about operations, goals and services—especially overhead costs.

“We need to know the extent of service to the local community, and how many dollars go all the way through to those who are supposed to benefi t,” said Cyril “Sid” Spiro, chairman of Regent Bank which is based in Davie.

Regent can fi nd that information partly because Spiro and other Regent offi cials are members of boards of directors of several Broward civic and charitable organizations. That includes the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, of which Spiro is a former chairman.

“We provide donations and we tell our employees to assist with programs and to don’t be just a member,” he said.

Working with civic groups brings Regent into contact with other businesses that can become its clients, Spiro said. Meanwhile, some Regent clients have learned about and joined civic groups through their dealings with the bank.

BB&T has a review process, using information from its bankers and clients, before it determines levels of support for civic groups, said Antonio (Tony) Coley, the bank’s city executive for Broward.

“We need to see how our dollars will be leveraged and how they will make an impact in

local communities” said Coley, whose bank is headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C,

“We are allocated funding and we make decisions on spending locally, here and in our other markets,” he said.

Support for educational programs is among BB&T’s priorities.

“This is an investment to help young people, and it is for the long term,” Coley said. “When people can do better in life, it can help build a better community.”

Coley’s civic activities include the Broward Alliance, where he is a member of the board directors.

“Our involvement in the community also is a catalyst for branding and for bringing business into the bank,” he said.

Education, affordable housing and community development are primary areas for Wells Fargo

Bank’s civic support, said Jane Gilbert, the bank’s community affairs offi cer for South Florida.

Wells Fargo, based in San Francisco, gained its fi rst branches in Florida when it bought Wachovia Bank in 2008. It changed signs on those branches last year.

“The community programs we added (from the merger) are very similar to what we have had at Wells Fargo.” Gilbert said.

She said Wells Fargo increased its community affairs fi nancial contributions in South Florida in 2011, compared with 2010.

In 2011, Wells Fargo contributed nearly $3.5 million and its employees volunteered more than 10,000m hours in support of non-profi ts and schools in South Florida.

Over the past decade, Weston Jewelers at 1728 Main Street in Weston has gained the enviable reputation of being one of South Florida’s premier purveyors of fi ne jewelry and timepieces. Their new relationship with the Florida Panther’s Foundation and the Bank Atlantic Center has already paid some big dividends.

“We are absolutely thrilled and honored that a fi rst-class local company such as Weston Jewelers has chosen to join the Sunrise Sports & Entertainment (SSE) family as a marketing partner,” said SSE president & COO Michael Yormark. “I am looking forward to helping raise their brand awareness to BankAtlantic Center patrons, particularly through a number of unique programs that specifi cally reach their target audience.”

Shortly after Weston Jewelry and SSE joined forces, Weston Jewelry became a sponsor of the Ice & Dice Casino Event, which benefi ted The Florida Panthers Foundation. Held at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, the casino-style event featured every Florida Panthers player, coach and staff member acting as the dealers for the night. As a sponsor of the evening Weston Jewelers donated a diamond for the Champagne Raffl e. More charity events are on the horizon.

Another marketing partnership is “Diamonds Are Forever” Register-To-Win Campaign, and BankAtlantic Center Suite 242 Jewelry Extravaganzas, in which custom, high-end jewelry displays were erected in the arena’s owners’ suite during select ice hockey games.

“Our selection of fi ne jewelry is able to please everyone from collectors of rare gemstones to those buying their fi rst engagement ring. Our sales specialists’ are able assist you in English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and French,” said Tracey Dikes, who with her husband Edward Dikes own Weston Jewelers. “Harpers Bazaar named us one of the “Best Jewelry and Watch Retailers in America,” Edward added proudly.

It’s our way of giving back to the community and helping those in need,” Edward noted. Some of those non-profi ts include Make a Wish Foundation, Kids In Distress, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and The Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

BUILDING MD FINANCIAL & INSURANCE AND SERVING HIS COMMUNITY…

As owner of the Kastonian Group, Andy Kasten offers seasoned advice and guidance on a cornucopia of fi nancial services, insurance and other fi nancial instruments; from automobile, homeowners and renters, to business and commercial, trucking, annuities and life and health insurance.

“For the past fi fteen years, I’ve been helping individuals and business owners navigate the fi nancial and risk management markets,” Andy noted. “I’ve developed a specialty in working with entrepreneurs who have specialized needs.” These include cost-effective benefi ts for employees and key executives as well as optimizing tax advantages, and “… the guidance to bring everything together.”

MD Financial & Insurance, at 10532 N.W. 56th Drive in Coral Springs, is an independent agency with extensive relationships with dozens of insurance companies. “Whether you have the ideal history or a not so perfect history, we fi nd the right coverage, with the best company, at the best price.”

Prior to starting his company, Andy was involved with a family business, manufacturing children’s clothing in the United States. “At our peak, we employed more than 300 people with a volume of $32 million a year,” he noted with pride. “This has given me a keen

interest in, and understanding of the power, potential and challenges faced by business owners.”

Andy balances his demanding work schedule with family and community projects. He has lived in Coral Springs since 1995 with his wife Lori, daughter Sami and son Zach. His work with several community and charitable causes is something he takes seriously, such as coaching youth soccer and youth baseball.

“My passion is the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce! I have served on the Board for three years and currently serve as Chairman of the Chamber,” he enthused. He is also a Trustee, President of the Wednesday morning referral group, the past Small Business Leader and a sponsor of the Professional Woman Alliance thru the Chamber.

There’s an old saying that “… all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.” In Andy’s case, although he works a lot… he is an avid Ice Hockey fan and at the age of 52, he plays two-to-three times a week in adult leagues in Coral Springs. “Though most of the guys are younger than me, I can still compete at a high level and enjoy the camaraderie with my team mates. It relieves stress, is excellent exercise and a great escape.”

CORAL SPRINGS RESIDENT TODD RADOSEVICH NAMED HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL’S 2011 DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

Recognized for his excellent leadership skills, professionalism and depth of technical knowledge, Holy Cross Hospital has honored Coral Springs resident Todd Radosevich as its Director of the Year for 2011.

“Todd’s commitment to our mission and core values serves as an inspiration to all of our Associates,” said Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO, Patrick A. Taylor, M.D. “He leads by example. While soft-spoken, Todd motivates and mentors Associates with passion and energy. Under his leadership, things get done.”

As executive director of revenue management for Holy Cross Hospital, Radosevich took on new challenges in the last year. With added responsibility for the fi nance and decision support departments, Radosevich also focused on improving processes at Holy Cross as a follow-up to the closing of the sale of Mercy Hospital in Miami.

In 2009, Radosevich consolidated the business offi ces of Holy Cross and Mercy Hospital when both were under the leadership of parent organization Catholic Health East. After Catholic Health East sold Mercy Hospital, he was responsible for reestablishing Holy Cross Hospital’s independent business offi ce.

Receiving the honor was a surprise to Radosevich, who credits his team for their hard work and dedication.

“It’s an award that I share with my colleagues,” said Radosevich. “Together, we have accomplished a great deal in this past year, and this recognition tells us that we’re doing

what the hospital needs us to do. It is an honor to let my team’s efforts shine through.”

A participant in Holy Cross Hospital’s Legacy Institute, which prepares hospital Associates to carry on the Catholic heritage that is the foundation of the healthcare ministry at Holy Cross, Radosevich considers the mission of Holy Cross to be his calling.

“Holy Cross is different than your average workplace,” he said. “When you work at Holy Cross, there’s a connection that you feel to the hospital’s ministry. You feel that connection in the halls, you feel that connection in your colleagues, and when you’re working hard, it’s that connection that’s driving you to make a positive difference. The Sisters of Mercy founded this hospital with a mission to provide compassionate healthcare to the community, and as we carry that mission into the future, I think it’s what sets Holy Cross apart.”

A member of Catholic Health East, Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. is a full-service, non-profi t Catholic hospital, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. Since opening its doors in 1955, the 571-bed hospital has offered progressive services and programs to meet the evolving healthcare needs of Broward County. Today, Holy Cross has more than 600 physicians on staff representing more than 40 specialties and more than 3,000 employees. The hospital is fully accredited by the independent Joint Commission, and its medical team has earned a reputation for excellence unsurpassed in the community. THE NON-SURGICAL EYE LIFT, NECK LIFT, WRINKLES AND SKIN LAXITY REVISION!

This new procedure can be used to diminish and erase:

Pellevé is the long-awaited solution! In one short, easy, very comfortable treatment, you can experience a marked improvement in the appearance of fi ne lines, skin tightening and wrinkles for up to six months! We are seeing wonderful results in as few as 1-4 treatments.

The technology of the Pellevé system sets it apart from other wrinkle-reducing treatments. When you are treated with Pellevé, a more focused Radio Frequency energy is delivered to areas of the skin where elasticity is lacking and lines have begun to develop. This energy heats the skin, causing it to begin producing collagen. Collagen is a key component in healthy, toned-looking skin.

It delivers heat to deep layers

of the skin where fat resides. This “controlled focused energy” spurs the contraction of these deep tissues for an overall smoothing effect.

The heat energy also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, resulting in fi rmer, tighter, smoother skin. The practitioner adjusts the strength of the delivered energy based on feedback from the patient throughout the session.

The Pellevé system requires no anesthesia and treatment can be conducted in as little as 15 minutes per area. We simply, apply a thin layer of gel to your face prior to treatment. Most patients experience only a warming sensation on the skin when the Pellevé hand piece is applied.

Patients often report that immediately after treatment skin feels tighter similar to Botox. When it takes effect, most patients often experience immediate results, and a reduction in the visibility of wrinkles at the treatment sites. Over the course of the next six months, you will continue to see smoother, more beautiful skin.

While many patients see results after just one session of Pellevé, we may recommend multiple treatments to help you achieve your optimal aesthetic goals. The total number of treatments can vary and is based on your individual skin needs. It takes up to two months for the full effects of Pellevé to be seen.

There is no downtime or side effects except the ocassional very mild swelling or redness which normally resides in an hour.

(TOOK OUT KADEL)

WOW! We have already been getting a number of emails from readers asking about Functional Healthcare. In this issue we will be exploring a very important body system that must be functioning at 100% if you are to be truly healthy and achieve long-term wellness, what secondary conditions can arise if function is compromised and what you can do help normalize function.

Last issue we explained that a functional approach to healthcare is different from the approach of traditional healthcare. Functional healthcare practitioners take into account whole body interactions rather than looking at part of the body as if it were separate from the rest of the body. With this in mind, we can still appreciate the functional roles that individual body systems perform.

The fi rst system we will look at is the nervous system. Most people (including many healthcare professionals) lack a true appreciation for the human nervous system. THE NERVOUS SYSTEM is the most complicated and highly organized of the various systems which make up the human body. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain plays a central role in the control of most bodily functions, including awareness, movements, sensations, thoughts, speech, and memory. The spine (which houses the central nervous system) is intricate, an impressive column of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, nerves, and the spinal cord. The spinal cord carries signals (messages) back and forth between the brain and the peripheral nerves.

The function of the nervous system is infl uenced by many different factors, including; diet, lifestyle

infection, cancer, and many other diseases and conditions. One main area of infl uence is the relationship between the nervous system and the spine, since the spine is so intricately related to the nervous system in both direct physical contact and function. The function of the spine will have a direct infl uence on the function of the nervous system and the rest of the body. Knowing that structure heavily infl uences function, it would be reasonable to suggest that abnormal spinal structure and function could lead to abnormal nerve system function. If this were to happen a number of SECONDARY CONDTIONS could appear, such as; neck pain, headaches, digestive problems, muscle problems, fatigue, immune system compromise, etc.

There are many things people can do on their own to help keep the structure and function of their spine close to normal (assuming there are no underling problems) which in return will help keep the nerve system functioning normally. Things like posture correction, balancing muscles, doing spinal hygiene exercises, eating correctly, taking the right supplements, and living a healthy lifestyle are all positive steps.

Sometimes, people have spines that have shifted beyond its normal limits and started to lose normal function, these people will benefi t from seeking out a healthcare professional that focuses on correcting abnormal spinal function. They will not only help them correct the problem but also empower them to keep their

spine and nerve system functioning at optimal levels.

Dr. David Kadel is a Doctor of Chiropractic; he practices out of Studio 4 Fitness & Wellness in Coral Springs. He and his team have a single focus, the “Advanced Functional Correction of The Body”. He utilizes a unique blend of Functional Correction Chiropractic, Functional Nutrition, and Functional Movement Correction. RENZO’SDINING

Many people consider dining out and the food they enjoy during this ritual…an event. Dining at Renzo’s of Parkland is an event; one that you should absolutely attend.

Lorenzo “Renzo” Sciortino and his wife Sara have been sharing their passion of both heart healthy and traditional Italian cooking for more than 20 years. They share their love of food at their three locations in Boca Raton and one in Parkland.

Being greeted at the entrance by Renzo is a treat. His warm genuine smile and outstretched arm with a fi rm handshake make you feel immediately comfortable. The intimate atmosphere is cozy and softly lit. You are transformed to a small area in Italy without the need to travel. The piano playing softly in the corner is just enough to relax even the weary after a tough work day.

Joe Veno, our server, has dedicated himself to our every dining need. He instantly makes you feel that he’s known you forever. His sharp knowledge of the chef’s menu specialties and the wine offerings that change daily keep you engaged and negotiating what is best to order. There are so many wonderful dishes to experience.

The long, hot stuffed fi nger peppers; the stuffed red bell pepper with sausage and risotto deliver an opening to remember. Sweet and spicy without an overpowering fi nish. The chef offers two versions of calamari; a traditional style dusted and lightly fried or calamari grilled

steak-style sliced and served with arugula, kalamata olives and tomatoes. And, for the serious diner who enjoys bone-in style entrees; the Veal chop with portabella mushrooms or the Tomahawk steak are both mouth-watering experiences. Each slice of meat bursts with rich fl avor. Extraordinary!

And for those who choose a more seafood

dining approach; the grilled sea bass oregano or the grilled shrimp with eggplant and zucchini are cooked to perfection; tender and originally fl avored. The Bolognese with Strigoli pasta served family-style was wonderfully seasoned and light.

Life is short and the dessert experience at Renzo’s is unrepentantly rich so don’t think twice. The traditional Italian Cannoli, Tiramisu and Cheesecake are incredible; a dessert lover’s dream. The chef makes a few specialties unique to Renzo’s; the peach and lemon sorbets. They are exceptional. Each sorbet is created inside the fruit and served in a beautiful goblet. Perfect to enjoy at the end of your meal or while sampling a few of the other tempting treats.

If you are fortunate to be present at the end of the evening at Renzo’s, you may hear one of the most beautiful voices as the chef heads out of the kitchen. Beyond his ability to create wonderfully tantalizing meals, Chef Giuseppe Carriero may make you tear up listening to his beautiful Italian singing. The passion for life, food, service, family and friends is translated through your entire experience at Renzo’s. For more information, visit www.RenzosOfBoca.com.

ANTHONY’S RUNWAY 84Long before “The Sopranos” made retro Italian fare trendy, Anthony’s was doing it with aromatic mussels, humongous meatballs and meltingly good veal parmagiana. This is the kind of upscale joint where marinara sauce is “gravy” and the list of evening specials, recited by servers who have been on hand for decades, is more interesting than the actual menus. Lunch and dinner. 330 W. State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale, (954) 467-8484.

BLUE MOON FISH CO.Top-notch fare-provided by chef owners Baron Skoris and Bryce Statham, along with chef Daniel Cournoyer-combined with unheralded views make this waterside eatery extremely popular. Heavy on the immaculately cooked seafood dishes- ranging from gumbos and pan-roasts to tartares and fi llets- the menu also offers some good meat choices, as well. Signature souffl es for dessert. Lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. 4405 W. Tradewinds Ave., Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, (954) 267-9888. www.bluemoonfi shco.com.

CAFE MARTORANOWhat there is: bright fl ashing lights, loud Sinatra music, descending disco balls,

Mafi a movies shown non-stop. What there isn’t: a written menu. Owner Steve Martorano sends out only what he feels like cooking that day, and everyone pays the price of the night, which can be as hefty as his infamous meatballs. What it is: delicious, and quite the scene for tri-county cognoscenti. Reservations would be necessary, but they’re not accepted. Dinner only. 3343 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, (954) 561-2554, www.cafemartorano.com.

CAFE VICOMarco Vico’s triple-storefront restaurant is a triple threat on the Italian trattoria scene, providing warm hospitality, great food and reasonable prices. The seafood is always fresh, so if you’ve got a thing for shrimp fradiavolo, squid ink pasta or linguine and clams, you can scratch those itches here. Succulent scallopini and chicken-fi lled ravioli are other guaranteed winners, as are desserts such as ricotta cheesecake and a caramelized apple torte. Dinner. 1125 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale; (954) 565·9681.

CASA D’ANGELO RISTORANTEChef-owner Angelo Elia shines in his namesake eatery. Fare is fancier here, sparkling with imported products and served with greater formality, as befi ts the homemade pastas that practically fl oat out of the kitchen. Highlights include branzino, the veal chop and anything garnished with olives. Desserts are standard but no less superior because of it. Extensive, if expensive, wine list. Dinner only. 1201 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, (954) 564-1234, www.casa-d-angelo.com.

CHIMA STEAKHOUSEGod bless the hungry diner who’s got a Brazilian steakhouse in his own neighborhood. With a salad bar that defi es the meaning of extensive, including prosciutto and hearts of palm, and a steady parade of more than a dozen varieties of succulent skewered meats that vie for favoritism, places like Chima are a natural choice to impress colleagues and loved ones. 2400 E. This year a startling shift is occurring that will change the demographics of the world’s most important market forever. 2012 is the fi rst year in history that non-Hispanic white births in the United States will no longer be the majority.

According to The New York Times, “in the latest sign of the nation’s shifting racial and ethnic composition, births to Asian, black and Hispanic women in the United States are on the verge of surpassing births to non-Hispanic whites.”

Please don’t kick yourself for not noticing. How many people caught up in the wave of history actually see what’s going on while it’s happening? As Marshall McLuhan wrote, “We don’t know who discovered water, but we know it wasn’t the fi sh.” You see, there’s a reason why hindsight is 20/20. There’s a reason why the words should’ve, would’ve and could’ve are usually accompanied by a Three Stooges’ slap to the forehead. And there’s a reason why you should pay attention to this new American reality.

It’s no longer enough to look at things the way they were and wonder why. Instead, look at things the way they’re going to be and wonder where? As in, where is the opportunity?

After all, if minorities accounted for 48% of all births in the US in the 12 months that ended in July 2008, then business as usual is no longer business as usual anymore. And if you haven’t changed to embrace these new consumers then, pardon me for saying it, but you’re talking to ghosts. Specifi cally, the ghosts of markets past.

By the way, before you think this is only a domestic phenomenon, major demographic changes are not just occurring within The United States of America but in all of the Americas. In direct contrast to what is going on in much of the rest of the world, Latin America’s economy is soaring. Mexico and the 19 countries of Central and South America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (not including Cuba) are seeing year over year economic growth. And for the fi rst time in history, this hemispheric growth is not simply due to the exploitation of natural resources but directly related to the ascension of the middle class. In fact, this demographics’ purchasing power is surpassing that of the upper classes for the fi rst time ever.

What is required today is bold new creativity and leadership

based on the realities of the hemisphere the way it’s going to be, not the way it was, and certainly not the way old school marketers would like it to be. What is called for in these exciting yet uncertain times is a new outlook that takes into account the way these emerging consumers pay attention, consume information, make purchase decisions, and ultimately, buy.

It’s not like the clues are always easy to decipher. Way back in 2007, the research fi rm Information Resources found that salsa outsold ketchup in the United States by $163.4 million. Yet the very same year another market researcher, NPD Group, reported that 48% of households used ketchup in a typical two-week period, three times the number that used salsa. And The Wall Street Journal reported that condiment giant Heinz declined to take a public position, saying instead, “We believe there is room for both in the refrigerator and that consumers don’t view the two products interchangeably.”

Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not suggesting that simply because these new consumers represent a formerly minority demographic that minority marketing techniques are the right tools to reach them. What I’m suggesting (perhaps “suggesting” is too subtle, perhaps screaming from the mountaintops is a better description of what I’m trying to do here) is that — from advertising to politics, retail to housing — a new understanding of the new majority is essential. Because, if I haven’t made it clear enough so far, these new consumers ARE the majority.

Understanding and embracing these new consumers’ use of technology, language, cultural cues, and fi nancial tools — both online and off — will ultimately determine

who will prevail and who will be sitting by the wayside, wondering what the hell just

happened.
