It’s challenging, particularly for a working teacher to commit to union work and we are very appreciative of those who do, whether on the Executive Committee, as Staff or PD reps, Committee chairs and members or any of the other access points to union work. I’m pleased the released officer team remains intact as, the strength and commitment of the people who work in the office is undimmed by the passage of some time in the work. I always grateful to the office staff who perform astounding feats of organization and are expert cat-herders when it comes to working with the officers. Finally, I thank the general membership for their support of the union, especially as we approach a challenging bargaining environment in 2018-19. Have a lovely long weekend, everyone. . CTA UPDATESAdministration Conversations with staff around absences

"The district has informed us that there have been some high absences the past three Fridays and assuch they have asked admin to remind staff of the impact of such absences on operations in schools.

Randy Manhas, Executive Director of HR did state in his email to admin:

"To be clear, I firmly believe that the significant majority of teachers are totally committed to thedistrict and their students. I am fully aware that many of our staff come to work even when theyprobably should stay home because they are ill. Having said that, it is incumbent on us to lookinto these trends more deeply to gain a better understanding of what is occurring on Fridays."

At this time the CTA just wanted to let members know where these conversations admin may behaving with staff are coming from and call CTA If there is anything unusual about theseconversations.

Graduation Assessments: Numeracy and Literacy

As part of the updated Ministry of Education graduation requirements, students in the newGraduation Program will have to complete a provincial literacy and numeracy assessment. Thisassessment is not tied to any particular curriculum. The Graduation Numeracy Assessment is beingimplemented this year, and the Graduation Literacy Assessment will be implemented in the 2019–20school year, replacing the existing Language Arts 12 examinations.

The BCTF has issues an Educational Change Bulletin that examines this closer and can be read in fullhere: http://www.bctf.ca/uploadedFiles/Public/Publications/NewslettersAlerts/EdChangeBulletin/ECB-2018-05-17.pdf

Last night’s #Ignite43 at Samz Neighbourhood Pub in Port Coquitlam was agreat success!

A big shout out to our amazing presenters who so eloquently shared theirperspectives on teaching and learning in 2018: Chuck Baker (Dr. CharlesBest), Jeff Christensen (Eagle Mtn), Andrea Klockenbrink (ContinuingEducation), Sherina Chandra (TTOC), Erica McArthur (Riverside), Trish Quan(Kwayhquitlum), Dave Sands (SBO), Erin Stainsby (Dr. Charles Best), GregSutherland (SFU), Ali Tootian (Gleneagle) and Stephen Whiffin (SBO). Topicslooked at engaging our learners through outdoor education, makerspaces,Instagram and infographics; understanding the developmental stages ofplagiarism; looking at how innovations are diffused and recognizingtechnology as a tool for change; taking care of ourselves with a FITperspective so that we can situate ourselves, find our why, and reflect on ourjourney.

An extra special thank you to our emcee, James Gill (Meadowbrook) and ourhost, Amanda Long (CTA).  Your passion for lifelong learning shines through!

#Ignite43 brings together trustees, district leadership, administrators andteachers as we work together to create a culture of professional learning. Weare grateful to Continuing Education, Dell Computers and SD43 for helping tosponsor this CTA event.

Watch for our next #Ignite43 coming in the Fall!
