How to Use Boolean Operators to Form an Effective Search Statement?

Use AND Operator to narrow down your search to get more specific results

Example: GMP AND Pharmaceutical- it retrieves articles which contain both words: GMP and Pharmaceutical

Example: GMP OR Pharmaceutical-it retrieves articles which contain either of the words: GMP or Pharmaceutical

Use OR Operator to broaden your search to get an overview of the resources


Other Special Operators for Effective Searches

Truncation / Wildcards, e.g. ** or ??- it retrieves words of similar formsExample: technolog*

will retrieve articles which contain words liketechnology; technologies; technological

Phrase search, e.g. “ ”“ ” or ( )( )- it retrieves articles contain the exact phrase

Example: “counterfeit drugs”will retrieve articles which contain the exact phrase “Counterfeit drugs’


In the search box, key in "current good manufacturing practice" OR cGMP

How To Search for Materials using the Library Catalogue?


15 records are retrieved


ii) Click on “Submit” when done

i) Limit the search by material type eg. Book/Serial

Limit Search to Specific Material Type



Note: you will get a a set of results which consist of books or serials only

ii) Click on “Search” when done

Using AND Operator to Narrow Down your Search


i) Key in GMP OR Pharmaceutical



Using OR Operator to Broaden your Search

Note: More records are retrieved when using the OR operator


i) Key in the phrase “Code of Federal Regulations” AND the word GMP



How to Search for FDA Codes Relating to GMP? (Phrase Search)


i) Limit the search to DVD/VCD/ Video


Search for DVDs/VCDs/Videos on GMP


i) Key in Pharmaceutical Handbook



Search for Handbooks on GMP


i) Key in the keyword Pharmaceutical



Search for Periodicals on GMP


i) Limit the search to Periodical

Click on “E-books” to access

Search for E-Books on GMP


Library Collection of E-Books is displayed by Title


Scroll down the list to ebrary and click “Connect”. You may use the “Quick Guide” to learn more about the collection


You will be asked to key in your Spice UserID and Password if you are accessing from off-campus


Read the Copyright Statement and click on “I Accept”


ii) Do a Simple Keyword Search, key in GMPs

iii) Click on “Search” after you are done

i) You need ebrary Reader to read the ebooks. Download and install the Reader first if you are using your own laptop

iii) Bibliographic info of the Book

i) For an Advanced Search, key in GMPs under Text AND Pharmaceutical under Subject


Note: You can also search in Text, Subject, Author, Title or Publisher field using the drop down list
