I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you missed this one, you missed some serious fun, education and participating in a worthwhile, socially redeeming event.

Our aviation activities mostly revolve around the hedonistic pursuit of flight. This weekend our members "paid forward" the blessing of flight we are and have been privileged to experience. We pursue two worthwhile events to benefit our communities and this was one of them. Do your part when you get the opportunity.

On a gorgeous Sunday morning (February 12th) we gathered at the Belle Glade Airport to fly a Young Eagles/FFA/4H/Career Day event. The kids in this farming area are a pleasure to be around.

A brand new runway awaited our landing and lifting at this primarily ag spraying air strip. Tyler Ulrich of Van Wagner Aerial Media circled above the field with a beautiful banner welcoming all the participants to the function. Tyler came all the way from North Perry Airport in Hollywood to create this very special welcome for the kids. A spectacular way to kick off the event this was.

Willie Lee's hangar was festooned with presentation tables by the various agribusinesses in the Glades as well as farm equipment displays outside the hangar provided by Everglades Farm Equipment and Glade & Grove Supply. The University of Florida Extension

Center presented information on the various agricultural science educational opportunities available. The local fire department brought

men and equipment out for the kids to see and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Department

generously provided Deputies to watch over us.

The entire Glades community, including generous participation by the City of Belle Glade, all got behind this function which had a primary objective of exposing the young people to the opportunities available to them once they graduate from high school, tech school, or college.

We ended up flying 72 kids ranging in age from 8-17. These kids were all first class human beings having been raised up "right" in this farming community.

The event keeps growing thanks to the organizational

talents of Willie Lee (Aerial Crop Protection & The Glades Agricultural Scholarship Fund) and the participation of the Florida Cub Flyers, Rick Golightly and EAA Chapter 203, Florida Antique Biplane Association and OFFC. We flew 11 more kids than last year and hope to increase that number next year. The fact that we had such stellar participation from our member pilots and ground support crew made the workload easy for us all. Thanks to all who donated their time and resources to the success of this event. You are first class folks and count among the "doers" in society. As you may have heard

me expound, there are those who pull the wagon and those who ride. The "doers" are my favorite people to be around because they pull the wagon.

Anyway, we got to do our part to help pull off this event and received a bountiful arrangement of donuts, coffee, orange juice and cold drinks supplied by US Sugar, a great lunch courtesy of Florida Crystals and the FFA kids, as well as a beautiful "goodie basket" of very fresh vegetables thanks to the efforts of Megan Bedner Thompson of Howard Fertilizer and her Dad Bruce of Bedner Farms.

That's how we contributed. Now here is how we benefited. We all arrived at Air Glades Airport in Clewiston on Saturday (February

11th) for a fun and education packed day. An unexpected breakfast spread awaited us supplied by Lillie Rodriguez of the Airport Authority. When I say spread, I mean spread. All sorts of breakfast sandwiches, muffins, coffee, and orange juice.

We got to congregate, make new acquaintances and renew old ones while enjoying breakfast and hearing about the new, major airport expansion that is due to start within a year. Air Glades will become a

main entrance and exit point for air freight in the hemisphere. A new 10,000' runway and associated infrastructure will rise from the surrounding area providing thousands of jobs and revenue to the area.

We filled the parking ramp to overflowing with airplanes of all description. Many had to tie down in the surrounding grassy areas before we could load the touring bus and head out on our US Sugar

Tour. The bus and tour were generously provided by US Sugar and the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce. Judy Sanchez and Jennifer Black of US Sugar and Hillary Hyslope of the Chamber made this happen for us. We received VERY special treatment.

The Sugar Tour included all aspects of the sugar production process from

beginning to end. We also saw the citrus operation and got a tour of Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee. The detail required to describe it all would consume considerable newsletter space. Suffice it to say, "you had to be there".

We were treated to a delicious BBQ lunch at Sonny's in Clewiston in the midst of the tour.

Our bus took us back to the airport after the tour for those not spending the night and heading back to their nests for the night. The rest of us were taken to our hotels in Clewiston for a little R&R before the next phase of the adventure.

One of the special treatments we received was having our tour bus available to us during our entire stay in Clewiston. Since we all flew in, transport was an obstacle that the Chamber and US Sugar generously covered for us.

Right at 1800 sharp, the bus arrived out front of the hotel to take us to dinner at the Elk's Club down by the Roland Martin Resort in Clewiston. The Roland Martin Resort is the site of many, big time bass fishing tournaments in Lake Okeechobee. Our group darn near overwhelmed the spacious bar for happy hour. The top shelf adult beverages flowed with generous pours courtesy of the bar keep and manager and many of our members were VERY happy by the time we headed to dinner.

Our tour guide Ralph, his wife, along with our bus driver, and Hillary Hyslope of the Chamber and her husband, Rusty joined us for dinner. We continued the special treatment afforded us. Dinner was a real treat. You picked out your own huge rib eye steak from a platter, seasoned it yourself from a plethora of seasoning offerings and they were grilled to perfection according to your desire, then delivered to your table along with baked potato and garlic bread. DELICIOUS!

After dinner we reloaded the bus and headed back to the hotel. Our bus driver and owner of the company added another personal touch by having a huge box of cookies for us to partake on the way back. Yes, the owner of the company was our driver. What kind of cookie you ask? Sugar cookies, of course!

The next morning at 0700 sharp the bus was at the front door awaiting our boarding to head back to the airport for our trek to Belle

Glade. When I say "sharp" I mean "sharp". The entire trek was timed to perfection and we were treated like VIPs.

A slight departure delay was caused by ground fog at our destination. It was a beautiful flight from Clewiston to Belle Glade and the fog had lifted as we arrived in Belle Glade en mass. The weather could not have been nicer for the Young Eagles/FFA/4H/Career Day.

What a weekend we enjoyed. If you missed it, shame on you. If you participated, we’re grateful for your contribution to this worthwhile event.
