Welcome!

When was the moment you knew you had to work in health + wellness?

For many of us, it started with a personal transformation. Maybe you lost 20 pounds. Maybe you went from couch potato to marathon runner. Maybe you healed from an ‘incurable’ chronic illness. Or maybe you finally discovered the secret to sustained energy levels without the 3pm slump.

A health transformation like this is so significant, it almost divides your life into ‘before’ and ‘after’. And you want to share it - shout it from the rooftops - to help other people feel as good as you do now.

This transformation is what brings so many of us to start our own wellness businesses.

But the truth is - simply having that transformation isn’t enough. It’s the start, the spark, the illuminating moment that shows you what you’re meant to do … but it’s just the beginning.

Maybe you’ve noticed - but people are overloaded with conflicting health information. Too often, your amazing products and services get lost in the noise. Even if you offer a free session or lower your prices, it doesn’t get you the response you want. So what can you do?

The fastest way to reach a goal is to find someone who has done it before - and model them. Learn from them. You don’t need to reinvent business to have a successful business.

And that’s where this book can help.

Quick backstory: From the very beginning of my health coach training, I knew I wanted to create an online wellness business. I was already running a successful natural beauty blog, and wanted to offer virtual health coaching and online programs to my readers. So I looked everywhere for examples of ‘wellpreneurs’ who built their businesses online. Remember: “find someone who has done what you want to do - and model them!” But I struggled. I just couldn’t find enough examples of successful online wellpreneurs - and when I did, I could only see their outward-facing marketing, rather than the insider’s view I really wanted.

So in January 2014, I started a podcast.

The WellpreneurOnline Podcast is a weekly show about building a healthy business, online. I interview successful wellpreneurs about how they’ve built their businesses, and I’m so inspired by how generously they share their personal experiences on exactly what’s worked - and what hasn’t - so we can learn from them.

Getting Started: Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Do you ever feel like you’re not ready to take the next step with your business? Maybe you feel like you need to learn more, or get another qualification? Getting started can be the hardest part. It’s easy to get stuck, feel like you’re not ready, or that you need to spend more time creating the perfect plan. As these wellpreneurs share, sometimes you just need to get started, and trust that you will grow with your business and learn from your mistakes!

● Sometimes you just have to start!

Sean Croxton: You can take a million courses and lessons, but until you put yourself out there with personal posts and start producing content, you aren’t going to go anywhere. As hard as it is, you just have to start.

● Start small.

Kimberly Wilson: Start with a small topic - dip your toe in the water. Do you actually like it? Does it resonate with you? Explore all of your interests, but don’t take on too many things at once. As you build your audience, you can branch out into other areas. Establish a core and move out from it.

● You don’t have to have every little thing planned out.

Jenn Lee: You don’t need to have every little thing figured out before you get your first paying clients—people often get stuck this way. Planning helps you know which way to go but your actions end up helping clarify your plans further.

● Reconnect with your why.

Amanda says: I always recommend new wellpreneurs watch Simon Sinek’s Ted talk “Start with Why”. Getting connected to WHY you’re starting a business is really effective at focusing your work - so much more than getting lost in the details of what you’re going to do or how you’ll do it. This is a great talk to re-watch every year when you need a boost!

● Do you need a business plan?

Jenn Lee: As an entrepreneur you may think that you need to have a business plan that follows a traditional format, but for a lot of creative business people you just need a basic roadmap. Getting there doesn’t have to be this arduous and unpleasant process where you check off boxes. Why not keep the process inspirational and fun?

Find Your Niche And Build Your List

No matter how amazing your wellness product or service is - you can’t help everyone. It’s essential to be specific about the types of people who you can help - and exactly what problem you solve! Being specific about your niche / target market will help you build your community more quickly, because people will be clear about what you do, and how you can help them.

● Effective email listbuilding

Amanda says: One of the first things you should do is start an email list - even before you have a website. People are busy, and won’t remember to check back with you regularly. Once you have their permission to email them - then YOU have the power to contact them - no more waiting and hoping that people visit your site! You can start with a free service like MailChimp to manage your email list.

Rachel Feldman: Opt-in Freebies are a great way to get your list going. It has to be something that applies to your niche, and usually applies to your own story. To be effective, your opt-in needs to solve a small problem, and look professional. Narrow down your message and the right audience will follow.

● Don’t sweat the unsubscribes

Sean Croxton: Don’t let negative feedback get you down—in any form. It is often a sign of success, and shows that you are challenging the existing order of things and shaking things up. If people unsubscribe from you, that isn’t bad. You only want people there who want to be there and who are really enthusiastic about what you have to say. “If you unsubscribe, you’re not part of my tribe.”

● Build a relationship

Jennifer Fugo: Think about the level of engagement with your audience—these relationships are very much like romantic ones—in the beginning you don’t really know each other or what the relationship is going to be like. Start slowly. They need to get to know you, and then people are more willing to invest in you and get into your philosophy. The low cost things you put out need to have great content to draw people in.

Jennifer Fugo: Facebook is a great platform for experimentation and testing— try out new ideas and see what works - this can help you get in touch with what your audience wants.

“You-ness! Be Yourself!

Your product or service isn’t right for everyone. Your ideal clients will be attracted to your quirks. There’s no need to be ‘perfect’ and present a flawless image online. Clients actually like to see your journey and that you’re a real person dealing with similar issues. Don’t be scared to let your personality show in your business—it will help you gain clients who feel connected to you personally, and who will really get something positive out of working with you.

● Tips on Authenticity in Business:

Julie Santiago: It is often the parts of yourself that you are most self-conscious and embarrassed about and that you try to hide that make you most appealing to others and most authentic. The more you show this side of your life, the more you attract the right type of person to your blog or business, someone you can truly help.

Don’t feel like you have to ‘fix’ everyone. It is not your job to produce results for your clients and readers, but rather to guide them along, inspire them, hold them accountable, and believe in them. The results are up to them.

Be fearless. Trust your path, know yourself. Know that you are here for a reason, and listen to the voices in your head, even when they don’t necessarily make sense. They are also there for a reason.

Rachel Feldman: When starting from scratch, tell a story! Give personal info. It’s not just about your content, people need to fall in love with YOU.

Sean Croxton: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, and produce lots of new information. You just have to put your own spin on what’s working for your peers. You are a unique person, and your story and your personality might resonate with someone more than another person’s. There is only one voice like yours, so you will always have a place in the industry if you keep at it.

● Tips on competition:

Nisha Moodley: There is only one you, and that means that you aren’t really competing against others. The right crowd will gravitate to your site because they are attracted to something about you.

Sean Croxton: Don’t worry about your competition—there isn’t really any such thing. No one can be you better than you can, and there is only one you. People are hiring you not just because you fulfill a need, but because you are yourself and something about that appeals to them. Be a true embodiment of your teachings, lead by example.

Take Your Wellness Business Online

Even if you’re a technophobe, today’s digital culture means you have a huge opportunity to find followers who need your products and services - anywhere in the world! Don’t miss this amazing opportunity! Reflect you and your brand in all of your online interactions, and use the Internet to build a following.

● It’s not about you.Amanda says: When choosing what to share on social media, think about your ideal client. What questions do they have? What will they find interesting, helpful, funny or shareable? That’s the difference using social media personally and for business - to grow your business, you always need to think about what your ideal clients wants to see!

● Think about your social media presence overall.Adina Grigore: Social media accounts should offer the viewer a glimpse of the brand. Make sure it’s all cohesive.

● Social media is a conversation.Jennifer Fugo: Think about your Facebook interactions like a conversation. We often feel the need to dictate what we think is appropriate to people about their health, but remember, you aren’t lecturing, you’re having a conversation.

● Don’t get caught in the social comparison trap!Julie Santiago: Choose not to let yourself feel inferior or get distracted by social comparison. Be in tune with yourself and your body, and your own personal physical signals that indicate the switch from productivity and inspiration to stressful social comparison. Avoiding social media at this point of transformation will make you less stressed and more productive.

● Using technology to build a team.Mark Sisson: Take advantage of technology, especially when building a team. You can collaborate with people from across the world, who are the best at what they do. This also means that you can focus on what it is that you’re good at, and let others help with the rest.

Amanda’s note: to learn about building a virtual team, listen to my 3-part series on hiring a Virtual Assistant.

Managing Your Money

Money: most of us want more of it - but the details of how much we have, and how to get there, are often swept aside. As a wellness business owner, you need to overcome any mental blocks you have about money and truly own your earning potential.

● What type of income do you have?

Rachel Feldman: It’s important to have access to both active and passive sources of income. Active income comes from something like actively working with clients one-on-one. Passive income comes from ready-made products and programs like a home study course or selling essential oils or supplements.

● Investing in yourselfMark Sisson: Invest in yourself. When you create an audience, this becomes an asset that you can draw on in the future. You’re building this asset up for yourself as opposed to building something for a company, and it is yours to keep.

● Don’t rule out a day jobAdina Grigore: As an entrepreneur, you have to accept the lack of security and a regular paycheck. It’s always going to be scary. You have to be ready. Stick it out at your job for longer than you would like to be safe.

● Check your money mindsetDenise Duffield-Thomas: Eliminate limits and mental blocks on how successful you think you can be. Many people, especially female entrepreneurs in the field of wellness, can’t accept abundance. They either think that they can’t make money from what they’re doing, or feel like they don’t deserve to because they are selling important life information that should be available to everyone. These mindsets should be eliminated.

Get rid of this sense of monetary guilt: If you give and give with nothing in return, you will quickly burn out, and no longer be able to help anyone. Serving everyone else while not taking care of yourself will damage you, which damages those you help in the long run.

Your Products And Services

Part of shaping your business is determining what products or services you want to offer. Think about what it is that you are teaching, and what it is that your clients want and need. What are your clients’ common questions or problems? What common steps or tips do you give to every client?

● I don’t know what to sell!Sean Croxton: Don’t stress about products, just start putting out your info and sharing and engaging with the community you build. Start up a blog! It doesn’t need to be complicated, and you don’t need every little thing prepared before you get going.

● Do your offerings align with your values?Nisha Moodley: Build freedom into your business. When you understand what your core desired feelings are, you can use those as a life compass. Know what it is that you want to feel, your future vision is your north star. How do you want your life to look and feel in the future? Check in moment to moment with your core desired feelings. This applies to what you are selling as well—make sure it fits into your business and feels right to you.

● Let your audience guide your productsMark Sisson: There has to be bi-directional interest. Listen to the ideas, concerns, and questions that your audience voices, and figure out what parts resonate with you as well. It is in this intersection that you can often do your best work.

Adina Grigore: Get your product out there and see what people think—you won’t necessarily feel completely ready and prepared, but you have to push through. People aren’t nearly as judgmental as you think they are.

Kimberly Wilson: Notice what isn’t in the market yet and what you and your customers are both drawn to. You’re creating an experience. Step back and focus on what you’re good at or what you’d like.

Getting Support

As an entrepreneur, you’re responsible for every part of your business - but that doesn’t mean you have to do it all yourself! You’ll want a team of advisers to help you along the journey. This might include a peer coach or mastermind group to hold you accountable and give you a fresh perspective, a business coach, a more experienced entrepreneur as a mentor, and possibly a virtual assistant or two to help you get more accomplished.

● Who are you listening to?Denise Duffield-Thomas: Don’t get your business advice and validation from inappropriate sources. This can cause stress, displeasure, and poor decision-making, and is easy to fall into with friends and family. Just because you love and trust them doesn’t mean they are the best people to talk business with.

● Find your communityNisha Moodley: Get support early on, and create a community to meet with and collaborate with when you need help. Find people with similar ambitions whose businesses are at a similar level. Having an outside perspective and someone to hold you accountable is incredibly helpful.

● Consider a virtual assistantAmanda: Even if you’re just getting started, consider hiring a virtual assistant. You can find someone to help you with updating your website, writing copy, updating social media, finding publicity opportunities and more. This frees you up to be the business owner, rather than being stuck in the details of day-to-day updates and marketing.
