Eagle-Research develops anddistributes practical energysolutions.

We define practical as simple, inexpensive, environmentally-considerate, easy to build, lowmaintenance and, applicable tosmall scale energy needs.

We gather information fromdiverse sources, performcomprehensive experimentsusing rigorous standards, thenpublish how-to books to sharethe results with otherresearchers and the generalpublic.

We believe that writing booksinsures that these energy-savingtechnologies will then be securedpublic knowledge, and that ourpatent-free philosophy promotesincreasingly better energysolutions.

Eagle-Research does notaccept government grants. Themoney acquired from the sale ofour books and devices is used tofinance on-going research.

In the past, fuel-savers would not workwhen applied to fuel systems withoxygen sensor feedback. Thesesystems are ‘accidentally’ designed toprevent efficient combustion!

Modern fuel systems use an oxygensensor to infer the air:fuel ratio of theengine.

Increasing the combustion efficiencyincreases the percentage of oxygen inthe exhaust (as much as 2%) because:• the engine uses less fuel for the samevolume of air and;• more oxygen is free because theefficient combustion produces lesscarbon monoxide and oxides ofnitrogen. Carbon dioxide rises slightly.

The computer thinks the increasedoxygen content in the exhaust can onlybe a lean mixture in the engine. Thecomputer then adds extra fuel to bringthe oxygen percentage back to 'normal'.Obviously, this negates the gains thecombustion enhancement gave you!

The EFIEs functions is to modify theoxygen sensor’s output-signal byadding a ‘floating’ voltage, so thecomputer won't ‘see’ the extra oxygen

and fight your combustionenhancement by adding extra fuel.

The EFIE is specifically designed towork on 1 to 4 wire zirconia (variablevoltage) oxygen sensors, there is nopossibility of damage to the vehicle’scomputer. This EFIE will not work oncertain oxygen sensors. (sidebar pg.3)

Applying the EFIE by itself is notrecommended. The EFIE should always be applied with a combustionenhancement device or method.

Use of the EFIE without combustionenhancement will result in a slightlylean mixture. The vehicle may gainfuel mileage (up to 15%), but at a slightloss of power. Engine life should not beaffected because the vehicle's computerwill not allow an excessively leanmixture.

The EFIE is recommended alone iswhen operating vehicles at extremelyhigh altitude. In those conditions theOEM computer systems don’t usuallycompensate for the rich mixture causedby the thin air.

Your actual mileage gains will dependon the capability of the fuel-saver(s)that you apply to your vehicle(s).

Use a high impedance volt-meter(zero to two volt range) to setup(adjust) your EFIE.

Measuring between EFIE greenwire (-) and white wire (+) willshow the voltage of the EFIEdevice itself. This is the testneeded to optimize the EFIE.

A higher voltage will cause thevehicle's computer to reduce fuelgoing to the engine.

Use of a volt-meter between theoxygen sensor input (green wire)and the output to the computer(white wire) will cause a fewmillivolts variance in the actualoutput. Actual output voltage willrise slightly when the volt-meteris removed because the volt-meter is actually a ʻloadʼ, takinga bit of power to operate.

AAddddiittiioonnaall TTeessttss

1 Measure from green wire toblack wire (ground) to show theactual oxygen sensor output.

If you leave the volt-meterhooked up when you start theengine, you will see theinteraction between the oxygensensor and the vehicle's exhaust. This can be helpful to get themost out of your fuel-savers.

2 Measure from EFIE white wire(+) to black wire (-) to show thecombined voltages of the oxygensensor and the EFIE.

If you monitor the oxygen sensorvoltage and EFIE voltage youshould notice that the computerwill try to keep the total voltageat 500 millivolts. (When thevehicle is warm and not idling.)

Install EFIE’s on the O2 sensorslocated BEFORE the catalyticconverter. Each O2 sensor needs it’sown dedicated EFIE.

The EFIE circuit board is best installedin an assessable place where theelectronics will be kept dry andadjustments can be made. If you decideto mount the EFIE under the hood, besure to weather-proof it well. Underthe dash is where we prefer to install.Keep wires away from the exhaustpipes heat.

The EFIE is slightly temperaturesensitive and will change voltage as itgets warmer or cooler. This is anotherto install it underneath the dash. Set itwhen the engine is at normal operatingtemperature.

Oxygen Sensor Notes:

There is a plug connector in the wirefrom the oxygen sensor. Cut theoxygen sensor ‘signal’ wire on thevehicle side of the plug. The oxygensensor side of the connector usually hasspecial heat resistant wire that is moredifficult to solder.

Solder the cut ends onto the appropriatewires of the EFIE.

Oxygen sensors may have up to fourwires. Extra wires are oxygen sensorground (low), and/or oxygen sensorheating wires. Your vehicle dealershipwill have a service manual that will tellyou how many O2 sensors you havebefore the Catalytic Converter and thecolor codes for the wires. Be preparedfor ignorance & poor customer service.

Install the EFIE into the highside wire. Some oxygen sensors have wires, labeled ‘highside’ & ‘lowside’. Thevehicle’s service manual will tell youwhich is the highside signal wire.

The correct oxygen sensor signal wirewill have no electrical connection(continuity) to:

• the vehicles ground (negative)• the vehicle exhaust pipe• any other wire coming from theoxygen sensor

Testing with an ohm-meter will showinfinite resistance when connectedbetween the oxygen sensor output, andthe metal body of the oxygen sensor, and all other wires. Do NOT test withignition turned on.

Easy installation Steps:

11 Connect the Black wire from theEFIE to vehicle ground (negative).Make sure to ground the EFIE to thevehicle very well.

22 Connect the Red wire to an ignitionswitched power source (positive), sothat the EFIE will shut off when youshut off the key. Usually the fusebox has spare terminals for this sortof thing. Alternatively, you can tapinto any power wire that shuts offwhen the key shuts off, such as theradio power.

33 Route the White and Green wires tothe oxygen sensor output (signal)wire. This can be anywhere from theconnector to the computer. Your O2sensor may have up to 5 wires, Weonly show the signal wire in ourinstallation drawing.

Cut the oxygen sensor signal wire:

44 Connect White wire from the EFIEto the end leading to the vehicle'scomputer. Solder and seal the jointfor a solid water-tight connection.

55 Connect Green wire from the EFIEto the end leading from the oxygensensor. Solder and seal the joint fora solid water-tight connection.

Finally, adevice thatallows fuel savers to be appliedto vehicles with oxygen-sensorfeedback:

EFIE(pronounced Ee-Fy)

Note: Regardless of what youread in our literature, we havediscovered that the EFIE workson ALL types of oxygen sensors, including A/F sensors andwideband sensors.

Note: You cannot control morethan one Oxygen Sensor perEFIE. Trying to do so willconfuse the computer, causingissues that may damage it oryour engine.

Note: We do not make an EFIEthat controls more than oneoxygen sensor. Since nearlyevery component on the circuitwould need to be duplicatedanyway, it makes no sense (tous) to stock two differentversions of the same circuit. One EFIE per oxygen sensoralso allows the customerplacement flexibility duringinstallation.

Tuning the EFIE

You will have to cut the rubber off theadjustment screw (see corner indicated)before you can get a tiny screwdriveronto it.

When the EFIE is adjusted off (totalcounter-clockwise) the oxygen sensorsignal is absolutely OEM normal.

Turning the adjustment screwclockwise causes a voltage across thegreen and white wires. The oxygensensor voltage signal runs through theEFIE (in green wire; out white wire) forvoltage enhancement.

For initial tuning: Pre-set the EFIE toabout 350 millivolts (measured betweenthe white and green wires) when thekey is on and the engine is warm andrunning.

Then adjust the voltage upward(clockwise = leaner fuel mixture) ordownward (counter-clockwise =increasingly richer fuel mixture) as yousee fit. We lean (adjust voltage up)until we notice performance issues, then richen ‘till the issues are gone.Always adjust with the engine warmand running.

Adjust in 25 millivolt increments.Gradually. then fine tune to the exactmillivolt you want.

The screw has 15 turn adjustment and aclutch so it will continue to turn(without damage) when the end isreached.

Make small adjustments while testing. Some computers ‘learn’ as they go.You have to allow the computer to getused to your adjustment before youreally know what the actual effect hasbeen. Some vehicle computers takeseveral hours of driving time tocompletely adjust. Final EFIEoptimization adjustments may takeplace over several days.

Optimum voltage offset varies witheach vehicle. Finding what’s best foryour vehicle will be a trial and errorprocess. If you notice a power orperformance loss, richen the mixtureuntil you’re satisfied.

If your ‘check engine’ light comes on,too much voltage offset has beenapplied. The computer can't adjust thefuel mixture any more. The computerwill never allow the fuel mixture to getso lean that engine damage can occur.

Guarantee

All Eagle-Research productsare sold with a money backguarantee. If you aredissatisfied for any reason, return the product(s) within 60days of receipt of the product(s)for a full refund of the product(s)price.

If it thinks the mixture is too lean, it’llstop listening to the oxygen sensor andgo into ‘limp’ mode.

If the check engine light does come on,turn down the EFIE and reset yourvehicle's computer. Computer reset isneeded to take the computer out of‘limp’ mode. During limp mode thecomputer is not listening to the oxygensensor. The mixture will be richer thanneeded to be, which will usually createa mileage loss.

Many computers can be reset bydisconnecting a battery cable for a few minutes (while the engine is not running). Then reconnect the battery cable and start the engine. Ifthis does not work, refer to yourvehicle's manufacturer for the specificreset procedure.

Most automotive stores sell a devicethat will reset computers (erase troublecodes) at the click of a button.

When you use more than one EFIE,adjust them all to the same voltage. Then experiment with changingindividual voltages for highestefficiency.

The EFIE is designed to be fullyautomatic. Once optimized, no furtheradjustment is needed, unless there arechanges to the fuel system.

The EFIE will not void any vehiclewarrantee.

It is against federal law (USA) for anyvehicle manufacturer to void awarrantee simply because the customerinstalled any kind of after-marketdevice.

Further, if the vehicle has problems andthe vehicle manufacturer ‘rep’ wants toblame the after-market device, the onusis on the vehicle manufacturer to prove
