Sir Ranulph Fiennes"World’s Greatest Living Explorer"

Often described as the ‘World’s Greatest Living Explorer,’ Ran Fiennes is the first person to reach both North and South Poles by foot. He also made it intothe record books by completing seven marathons on seven continents (including Antarctica) in seven days – soon after receiving emergency heart surgery.Only then did he take up climbing, starting with the North Face of the Eiger. At the age of 65, at his third attempt, Ran became the oldest Briton toconquerEverest. Amongst an incredible catalogue of adventures and extreme tests, Ran has recently undertaken The Coldest Journey, an attempt to cross Antarctica on footduring the southern winter where the temperature falls to minus 90°C. He was forced to withdraw when he suffered severe frostbite, but still claims that “ifyou are lucky enough to be able to walk around without acrutch, you might as well go for it.” It didn’t stop him from undertaking the hottest journey, the Marathon des Sables, a 159 mile run over six days intemperatures over 50C through the Saraha. Ran inspires  throughout the world drawing a connection between nature’s most dangerous and difficult challenges, and the day-to-day hurdles we all face.Teamwork, determination, patience, discipline and creativethinking are all critical in expeditions; we may not risk our own lives, but the parallels are clear even in less hazardous occupations. To him, building a teamwith the right balance of character and attitude is paramount. Persistence, tolerance, fitness, agility and the ability to perform under extreme pressure areall factors in Ran’s remarkable endeavours as they are in any competitive environment. As well as the personal challenge, there is another dimension to the expeditions. A huge amount of scientific research has been carried out by Ran’s teams,and charities such as Marie Curie and the Multiple Sclerosis Society have benefited to the tune of many millions.

PANEL - THE FUTURE OFEUROPE

Klaus Regling is the current and first ManagingDirector of the European Stability Mechanism. TheManaging Director of the ESM is appointed by theBoard of Governors for a renewable term of fiveyears. Klaus Regling is also the CEO of the EuropeanFinancial Stability Facility (EFSF), a position he hasheld since the creation of the EFSF in June 2010.

Klaus Regling has worked for 40 years as aneconomist in senior positions in the public and theprivate sector in Europe, Asia, and the U.S.,including a decade with the IMF in Washington andJakarta and a decade with the German Ministry ofFinance where he prepared Economic and MonetaryUnion in Europe. From 2001 to 2008, he wasDirector General for Economic and Financial Affairsof the European Commission.

During 2008-09, he spent a year at the Lee KuanYew School of Public Policy in Singapore where heresearched financial and monetary integration inAsia. Subsequently, he opened an economic andfinancial consultancy in Brussels. Previously, Mr. Regling had gained experience in theprivate sector as Managing Director of the MooreCapital Strategy Group in London (1999-2001) andas an economist with the German Bankers’Association. Mr. Regling studied economics at theUniversities of Hamburg and Regensburg.

Sylvie Goulard is deputy governor of the Banque deFrance since January 2018, 18th. She is also aformer Minister of the Armed Forces of EmmanuelMacron.

She served as member of the European Parliament(Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) from2009-2017. As MEP, she was a member of theEconomic and Monetary Affairs Committee(coordinator, rapporteur of several files on Financeand Governance of the euro area and banking union); she also chaired the parliamentary Intergroup fightagainst poverty – aiming at giving a voice to deprivedpeople in the European institutions.

After her law studies, and having graduated fromSciences Po Paris and the Ecole Nationaled'Administration, Sylvie Goulard worked as adiplomat in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs,mainly on European integration and Germany. Shealso worked at the French Conseil d'Etat.

Between 2001 and 2004, she was political advisor toRomano Prodi, during his time as President of theEuropean Commission.Her book L’Europe pour les Nuls (First, 2007) wasawarded the European Book Prize. She publishedseveral other books, including De la démocratie enEurope (Flammarion, Rizzoli 2012), co-authored withMario Monti and Good bye Europe (Flammarion,2016) on Brexit..

Werner Hoyer has a PhD (economics) from CologneUniversity where he also started his career in variouspositions. Dr Hoyer served for 33 years as a Memberof the German Bundestag. During this period, heheld the position of Minister of State at the ForeignOffice on two separate occasions. In addition, heheld several other positions, including that of Whipand FDP Security Policy Spokesman, DeputyChairman of the German-American ParliamentaryFriendship Group, FDP Secretary General andPresident of the European Liberal DemocraticReform Party (ELDR). Upon appointment by the EU Member States, DrHoyer commenced his first term as EIB President inJanuary 2012. His mandate was renewed for asecond term commencing on 01 January 2018.

Bourglinster Castle was probably founded in the late 10th century. Itconsisted of a upper and lower castle. The lower castle was probablyfinished in the early 15th century. The moat was dug out in the 15thcentury, but did not protect the castle quite as was intended to for in

1682 and again in 1684 French troops attacked and destroyed parts ofthe castle. Almost all the buildings of the lower castle were demolished

in the late 17th century.Around 1850 the castle was sold by its last noble inhabitants and wastransformed into a farm. In 1968 the castle was bought by the State ofLuxembourg and was restored. Restaurations works ended in 1988.

Bourglinster Castle now houses an exquisite restaurant and is a venuefor various cultural events.
