The hullabaloo about start-ups in India for thepast few years has thrust students in thebiggest dilemma of their lives — whether to geta job or be an entrepreneur.Just in case if you too belong to the confusedsection, we’ll give you one reason on why youshould take up an entrepreneurship by quotingHugh Hefner, who once said, “Life is too shortto be living somebody else’s dream.”

1. EXECUTION > IDEADo not spend too much time thinking aboutyour idea, just start with any idea you have asit will keep evolving or will change. There is nostart-up that has its core product close to itsfirst product. As the experts say, its five percent about the idea and 90 per cent about theexecution.

2. PITCHINGStudents need to be confident when they pitchtheir ideas, products or start-ups. The moreyou practice, the better you are going to be.

3. CUSTOMERS ARE THE KINGStay as close as you can to the customer asthey decide whether the product will work orno. A number of students like their productsmore than the customers and that is a bigmistake. If customers do not like your productthen you have a problem. So, it is reallyimportant for one to explain one’s product andask for feedback from consumers on theirliking, pricing and whether they need it.

4. MONEY MATTERSTry to run a start-up with your own capital orin a lean way as this can lead to complicationsand the investors are likely to divert thecompany in a direction where you don’t wantto be. Students think raising capital is amilestone. But, it is not! So raise capital onlywhen you need not just for the sake of it

5. NETWORKINGNetwork with the industry, otherentrepreneurs and people who are notrelated, so that you can take theiropinions. There are opportunities outthere to do something different but forthat people won’t come toentrepreneurs, the latter will have togo to them.

6. ENJOYStudents should enjoy whatever theyare doing as entrepreneurship requiresdedication and it is much more thanworking. You will be spending 14-16hours working, and you can stretch it,if you do enjoy it.

7. PUT A BREAKIf you realize, your start-up is fallingthen stop working on it as early aspossible without wasting any moreprecious time on it.

8. FAILURE IS A STEP FORWARDA number of students take failurepersonally. They starting thinking theyhaven’t done something right but, instead, they should understand thereare other circumstances too. Everytime one fails, it is an opportunity to dosomething different. If it doesn’t work,it doesn’t work and it should notmatter. Just stop and start somethingelse.
