Tied together…What’s the problem?

Page 8: Copper Crushes Cordilleras

• Many people are affected because laws are being made to kick Filipinos off of their native lands and aren’t paying attention to their needs

• Because the Filipinos cannot make their voice be heard, nothing is being done for their conditions and many people are dying

• Natives are dying due to the contaminated waters that are being used for washing minerals.

People are affected

-Politically The Republic Act 7942 allows country to industrialize but neglects the rights of the native Filipinos. "DENR Act Now! Implement the Supreme Court Decision!" Speech

“They have built roads. But they do not take into consideration the long-term effects of their mining activities on the town.” "Lepanto Mining and Life in the Cordillera." N. pag

-EconomicallyThe mining community in Cordillera has bad roads because there is no pavement. Logs taken from the rivers and burned were contaminated from the miners who were washing the minerals in the water."He used to pick up logs that were washed down the Lepanto River for firewood. His doctors said that the smoke from those logs might have caused his illness,”

Socially

"DENR Act Now! Implement the Supreme Court Decision!" Speech

• The new laws violates indigenous people’s rights – the Easement Rights granted to mining companies by the government legalizes the eviction of native people from mining areas and gives them no way to stand up for their rights of ownership over their ancestral lands.

• The mining company's have caused environmental construction, polluted the local river causing many people to die from bad life styles.
