Cooperman hand drums start in the Vermont woods, where trees

from native hardwood groves are carefully selected for their special bendingcharacteristics, then milled and dimensionedusing methods passed down through generations of sawyers and drum builders. We blend the traditions of solid, bent-wooddrum shell construction with innovationsinspired by leading artists to create our finelycrafted rich sounding hand drums.

All of the drums in this brochure are hand-crafted by the Cooperman Company at ourVermont sawmill and woodshop. We alwayswelcome requests for customized instruments, whether variations on the types and sizes listed here, or different instruments altogether.

AISKanjiraThe Kanjira is a relatively recent innovation, probably less than 100 years old, notablyadded to concerts of the Indian Carnaticmusic system as recently as the 1930's andthen mostly as a supporting instrument for theMridangam (the double headed barrel shaped drum). Today this small tambourine, with itsunique sound and extraordi-nary tonal range, is widely popular and has an established voice of itsown in jazz, fusion andworld music.Cooperman has collab-orated with virtuosoSouth Indian tambourineplayer Ganesh Kumar tointroduce a kanjira that

addressesthe evolv-ing role ofthe instrument, and thatenhancesthe rangeand func-tionality ofthe tradi-tionalinstrument.

Our steam bent hardwood shell is 7 7/8"dia. X 2 1/8" deep. With a distinctivebarrel-section profile for comfort andbalance, and a slightly largerdiameter to accommodate west-ern playing techniques, thisevolved kanjira is fitted with aspecial REMO® cloth/mylar filmthat imitates the flexibility of thetraditional, but now endangered, lizard skin. A custom designed cop-per jingle adds just the rightcut. Please refer to thesection onShared Features (see page 4)for other specificationsKanjiraDrum$145.00

GhavalInspired by a style of drum widely found inIran, Turkey, China, Azerbaijan, andAfghanistan, our Ghaval is designed to allowfor both deliberate shaking sounds and lightjingle sounds, with a bright high sound off

the head whether played in the hand-held or on-the-knee position.

Our ghaval shell, a turnedmaple frame with a decora-tive exotic wood outer flitch,is 13 3/4" in diameter,2 5/8 deep, 1/2" thick. This shell features a precision bearing edge, anda rolled bottom edge toreduce stress on the player’sfinger joints.

We’ve fitted our Ghaval with24 brass rings, divided into 6groups, each beginning and

ending with a small pellet bell. These rings and bells are mounted on

small hooks so that they make contact withthe wood shell, but not the head, and soavoid any unwanted buzz sound.A half-moon arch cut in the shell at the 6o’clock position allows for ease of play withboth hands. This design also enables a stable grip for the less traditional

playing style, where the Ghaval is held flat(like a pandeiro) in one hand and shakenback and forth, so that the rings hit the insideof the shell in rhythm, while the drum isplayed with the other hand.Remo®'s warm, responsive Renaissancehead is recommended. We secure the headinto an exterior groove which is then covered with a colored knit cord, a designthat minimizes the tendency of the head topull away from the shell.Natural skin heads are available uponrequest. Please refer to the section on SharedFeatures (see page 4) for other specificationsGhaval Drum $230.00

KanjiraDayerehOur dayereh was developed with the guidance of Houman Pourmehdi, founder ofthe Society for the Advancement andPreservation of Traditional Persian Music.Inspired by the virtuoso playing and the spiritual heart of Sufi masters, this drumbridges ourAzerbaijani styleghaval and largerdiameterPersian daffs. The shallow(2"), mediumsize (145/8" diameter)framedrum is dis-tinguishedby a single rowof 36 lightring jingles,a sharp bear-ing edge, andan unusuallysteep bevel transi-tioning to a rolled interiorprofile. The shell is steam bent hardwood, and is fully lathe turned on the interior (for acomfortable grip) and on the outside diame-ter (for precise thumb anchoring). A sharpbearing edge, facilitating exacting fingersnaps and rolls, is paired with an expressive, warm REMO® Renaissance head. Please refer to the section on SharedFeatures (see page 4) for other specifications DayerehDrum

TamburelloOur medium-sized Italianstyle tambourine fea-tures a unique set ofhand cut, dry jinglespaired with aloosely fitted syn-thetic head to cre-ate a drum thatemphasizes arobust yet tinny-jingle dynamicon top of aforcefully playeddrum. Many regionaltamburello techniques maybe explored with this mid-rangemodel, but typically the drum is gripped in theleft hand and the right hand is usedto produce fast, pivoting, triple-strokerolls moving from the thumb to theside of the hand to a full slap. Thedrum is designed to be light inweight, with an arch grip, and thejingle slots staggered to emphasizecontinuous rolls. A REMO® synthet-ic head produces a warm soundwith an excellent range of dynam-ics. Our turned hardwood shell is11 7/8” outside diameter x 2 11/16”deep, with 9 pairs of heat treated, roughly hammered jingles. Please refer to the section onShared Features (see page 4) for other specifica-tionsTamburello $212.00

PandeiroOur pandeiro is based on the traditional Brazilian styledrum, played gymnastically with the finger pads andhand heel. Our turned hardwood shell is 10 3/8" diameter, 17/8" high, with precision cut bearing edge. Each of the 5 sets of cupped jingles are dampened with a flat jingle to createthe traditional pandeiro’s dry, lively sound.REMO®’s cloth/mylar head is preferred. Wesecure the head into an exterior groovewhich is then covered with a colored knitcord, a design that minimizes the tendency ofthe head to pull away from the shell.Natural skin heads are available uponrequest. Please refer to the section on Shared Features (see page 4) for other specificationsPandeiro Drum $182.00

DaffA large (21”) diameter Daff expands our range ofPersian inspired tambourine drums. The large, shallowshell makes for a “big” drum sound, while an extensive complement of four interlocked, light brassrings are used to create an additionally big jingleeffect. The shell can be shaken to create a variety ofshaker rhythms and flourishes. When played with arhythmic, gymnastic rolling style, the rings tilt forwardto touch the skin creating a variety of scraping andbuzzing effects. The narrow bearing edge com-bined with a thin REMO® synthetic head makes thisdrum surprisingly sensitive and precise for its size. Theshell is steam bent hardwood, 21” outside diameter x2 5/8” deep, and is mounted with a REMO®Renaissance or goatskin head; this daff is fitted withchains of interlocking rings (2 single rings stranded toa double ring). Please refer to the section on Shared Features (see page 4) for other specificationsDaff Drum $288.00

AISVelezMediterrasianTambourinesGlen Velez designed this series of

drums to explore a new context forsome traditional instruments. The threedrums clearly borrow their design heritage from the South Indian kanjira, theItalian tamburello, and the Spanish pan-deroa, but they are not intended to be tra-ditional versions of those instruments. Thejingle pattern and design features havebeen adapted to facilitate Glen’s innova-tive, cross-influenced style of playing. In anaccompanying booklet, Glen demon-strates the application of his Mediterrasianstyle using hand movements drawn fromtraditional sources, but with the rhythmicideas used, combined and shaped into abroadened context.

● Our internal tuning system preservesthe traditional appearance while allowing the player a complete rangeof motion unencumbered by exter-nal hardware. A T-grip Allenwrench is included.
