The school celebrated Youth Week at the end of last term with a week of lunch time activities organised by the SRC.

Speed and evasive tactics in abundance were on display on Monday when the whole school was invited to partici-pate in a massive game of Red Rover. It was a beautiful autumn day, and all participants enjoyed a well-earned Zooper Dooper at the end of the game.

Tuesday and Thursday saw the return of our very popular Chatterbox from last year with students, staff and Mike Meyers talking about what their dream job would be or what reality show they would make. A good joke is always an option on our Chatterbox days, and this option was also taken up by participants. The following list of speakers shows the breadth of what was on offer over the two days. Molly and Daisy were entertaining, Mr Gardiner is always going to draw a crowd, Mr Piper is a true orator, David Tighe has great comic timing, and Aleah won us over with her most beautiful singing.

The Four Friend Challenge on Wednesday saw a closely fought competition with twenty three teams entered. The Music Gallery was a mellow way to finish the week, show-casing the variety of talent we have in the school. The quadrangle resembled a relaxed concert atmosphere with the audience enjoying the talented line up of artists.

This successful week of activities was made possible due

to the support of the Warrumbungle Shire Council and the

enthusiasm and support of all members of the school com-

munity. We look forward to the celebration of youth next

year.

Welcome back to all of our

students. It was inspiring to see them all enthusiastic about school on the assembly this morning. I stressed the importance of this term to the consolidation of their work and overall understanding of their courses. This is the term where they demonstrate what they have learned - the Half Yearly examinations later this term will give students an opportunity to use their skills to show what they have learned.

Students will enjoy the challenges this term. The NAPLAN tests occur in Week 3. These National tests measure student literacy and numeracy skills in Years 7 and 9. They provide the school with analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the student groups. They also inform parents as to the progress of their child. It is very important that students bring their own calculator to the tests. If your child does not have a calculator they can purchase one through the school Maths Department.

During the term break some important announcements were made by the Prime Minister and the Premier regarding school funding. The announcements tied to the Gonksi Report into School Funding are likely to have a direct positive impact on our school. I anticipate that Coonabarabran High will be able to continue to deliver the outstanding student support programs that underpin our amazing student achievements each year.

The new funding model provides a base amount of two schools for each student enrolled. To this, loadings are added to address the additional costs of educational provision due to other factors. Students from low socio-economic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students from Indigenous backgrounds and schools that are disadvantaged by their size or remoteness are all given additional support. Coonabarabran High school has always been very successful in overcoming the barriers of disadvantage. The additional funding that will employ local people in support roles in the school and buy resources for student learning will be wonderful for our school.

For the second year running a student from Coonabarabran High has won the Grenfell Henry Lawson Writing Competition. Clayton McKinnon won the award with his story "Same Hands". Two students received highly commended awards. Bess Graham and Ellie Capewell showed their emerging talents as writers.

Year 12 student Jeanette Schaeche has been awarded a Highly Commended in The Gulgong Henry Lawson Writing Competition in the Adult section. Her story was titled “Requiem” and explored grief and loss within a family relationship. We are very proud of the achievements of our young writers and look forward to seeing more from them in the upcoming “Feast of Words”.

The Annual General Meeting was held in March and the 2013 P&C Executive were elected: President: Mark Fosdick Vice Presidents: Mandy Sulter and Peter Knight Secretary: Tammy Samuel Treasurer: Angela Karagiannis Canteen Representative: Anita Tighe Congratulations and thanks to all. I look forward to working with you.

One of the main agenda items will be planning and preparation of the NW Equestrian Expo, in particular the running of the canteen at the Hut, the P&C‟s main fund raising activity of the year. Expo will be held from Friday 31

st May to Tuesday 4

th June 2013. Julie McGlashan will

present an overview of what is required and how it will be organised. A roster will be posted on the school website for volunteers to place their name in their preferred timeslots. Please volunteer your time! The profits raised are used to fund projects that educate your children. The Hut has recently been rebuilt and Julie assures us it will be a delight to work in.

Everyone is encouraged to attend P&C meetings and all efforts are made to address issues raised. Key staff are always in attendance and available for discussion, both at the open meeting or on a one on one basis. If you have any issues you would like raised at the meeting, but you can‟t attend on Monday, please ask another member to raise them on your behalf.

Five students will be competing at State Swimming Competi-tions. We had wins in basketball for both girl and boy teams. The Parent/Teacher night will be held tomorrow night between 4 and 7pm. The Literacy Committee that has been set up aims to improve literacy of students. Representatives from all faculties will be attending. The school aims to focus even greater atten-tion on individual students particularly with the L&BR program which looks at managing student behaviour in State schools. There will be many financial changes next year and significant issues for the Finance Committee. There will also be more say locally – local schools, local decisions. Deputy Principal’s Report – Graham Enks Mr Enks advised that year 12 have finished their half yearly ex-ams. extended illnesses to ensure they do not miss out on schoolwork was raised at the meeting. Mel Johnston is to devise a form for students that identifies their longer term absence. UNSW Aspire Visit On Friday 22 March, members of the University of NSW

ASPIRE team visited Coonabarabran High School to conduct sessions with Year 12 students.

The focus of their visit was to work with groups of students to get them to think about what subjects they are studying, what they do well in and why, and what they may be interested in studying at University.

Through the use of iPads students were able to visit the university site on line to look at a range of courses available. Students were also encouraged to set a number of goals that would assist them to achieve in 2013 and 2014.

The University has also made offers to Year 12 students to link up with students at university who would act as mentors to assist them with subject revision/exam preparation for their HSC subjects.

We look forward to the University returning in Term 3 to work with Years 7 to 11. A group of 5 Year 11 students will also travel to Sydney next week to participate in 3 days of on campus activities as part of the ASPIRE Step Up Program. NAPLAN 2013 The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, stu-dents will take the 2013 NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better tar-get effort and support to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful and happy lives. All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be ex-empted from participating in the tests. For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support.html NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for which students can study or drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school pro-gram, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recom-mended. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to mon-itor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child‟s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.nap.edu.au.

YOUR TIME STARTS NOW…

My earliest memory is…snow and ice brrr!!!

My school report usually said…Robert is very capable student, however…..

My first relationship was…a stuffed toy monkey called Charlie.

I don’t like talking about….my relationship with Charlie!!

My most treasured possession is…(no, it‟s not Charlie), life itself I guess.

My mother always told me…”ah, shudup, n‟ eat yur potaatis”

In the movie of my life, I’d be played by…Daniel Day-Lewis,...definitely.

I wish I had…more time to spend with my kids.

I wish I hadn’t…lost my toy monkey called Charlie.

My guiltiest pleasure is…beer

My most humiliating moment was…facing the punters club, after having missed placing a bet by seconds, $1200 on the nose, at 14-1, yep you guessed it!

My happiest moment was…was being thrown out of the punters club.

At home I cook…the best spaghetti

My last meal would be…Babi Guling, Balinese piglet on a spit served with an icy keg of Bintang!!

My favourite gadget is…my car.

I am very bad at…golf

When I was a child I wanted to be…be a Roman on a horse

The book that changed my life is…a Little Golden Book classic called The Sailor Dog. Not exactly an epic I know, but hey, as a young boy this book had a profound effect on me. The Sailor Dog is a story of resilience and self reliance, being who you want to be in a world that is adventurous, exciting and exotic. Go Scuppy!!!

If I could live anywhere I’d choose…Sydney Harbour

It’s not fashionable but I love…Indonesia

My worst trait is…impatience

My best trait is…tolerance

Friends say I am…a contradiction

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be…Scuppy the sailor dog

The song I’d like played at my funeral is…I DID IT MY WAY: Shirley Bassey, live in Berlin 1987

It scares me, but I’d love to…beat up the photocopier in the HSIE staffroom

My greatest fear is…beating up the photocopier in the HSIE staffroom

If only I could…beat up the photocopier in the HSIE staffroom

The hardest thing I’ve ever done was…Face the punters club!!

The biggest belly laugh I had was…Comedian Carl Barron, Balmain Leagues Club, hilariously funny!!

I relax by…being with my lovely wife

What I don’t find amusing is…disparity of global capital, hoarded by multinational corporations exploiting third world labour and resources, perpetuating violence and terror through private security organisations

I’m always being asked…what‟s with your hair?

My first impressions of Coonabarabran are…hey, this is a nice looking little town!

My favourite place in the world...right here, right now!!

At the moment I’m listening to… 105.5 Classic FM

My favourite work of art is...The painting of Napoleon rearing up on that beautiful white stallion, it‟s such a powerful symbolic image, so brilliantly done.

My worst job was...salesman in a North Sydney golf shop, I had to lie about my handicap!

I often wonder...about the intelligence, objectives and or motives of major global foreign policy makers.

Robert Holden is currently working at Coonabarabran

High School as an Indonesian Language teacher.

I am looking forward to getting back into the classroom with my students for another crack. Results from the first term were really pleasing, with many students having successfully taken that really hard first step to learning a new language. Well done every one. Hopefully this term is going to be even better with our students taking more upward steps on that staircase to language learning. Indonesian snapshot

Did you know the Indonesian language, belongs to the Austronesian languages family which extends across the islands of South East Asia and the Pacific. Other languages in this family include Malagasy (spoken on Madagascar off the coast of Africa), Javanese, Balinese, Tagalog or Filipino (the national language of the Philippines), and surprisingly the Maori language of New Zealand.

Also, some Indonesian words have been borrowed into English, for example, paddy, sago, sarong, gong, and kapok. The phrase “to run amock” comes from the Indonesian verb; amuk, meaning to run, out of control killing people indiscriminately.

Language lesson with Pak Holden Selamat datang (Welcome) (Pronounced: s’LA.mat - DA.tang) Selamat datang is a classic Indonesian welcome; you will see this on signs and doorways all over Indonesia. Selamat datang semua (Welcome all) (Pronounced: s’LA.mat - DA.tang - s’MOO. Wa) Here you are adding the word semua meaning all, basically you are addressing more than one person. Sampai jumpa! (Until we meet again) (Pronounced: SAM.pay – JOOM.pa) Sampai jumpa means, see you or see you again soon, literally meaning till we meet. So, on that note I will say,

Sampai Jumpa semua ! By Robert Holden Indonesian Language teacher

Moorambilla Voices Program In Term 1 a large group of students attended the

Moorambilla Workshop held in the High School Hall. Michelle Leonard took our students through a variety of activities to explore and develop their singing, rhythm and performance abilities. This workshop also doubled as an audition to select students to participate in workshops and concerts held as part of the Moorambilla Festival.

In the 2013 Moorambilla Voices Program students will be working with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship musicians, Taikoz (an amazing drumming ensemble), representatives of the Australian Ballet, Australian singer Katie Noonan, Indigenous artists Frank Wright, Mary Kennedy and Barbara Stanley, composer Alice Chance and accompanist Callum Close.

We are delighted with the number of students who have been

included in the first round offers for a place in this year‟s

program. Our congratulations go to Nicholas Bowden, Jarrod

Harvey and Annabel Park in Year 7; Daisy Andrews, Kadeisha

Ayoub, Byron Coe, Jasmine Evans, Hayley Martin, and Thomas

Varty in Year 8; Emma Tudgey and Kali Wilson in Year 9;

Dominic Lugli in Year 10; Jaimi-Lee Bennett, Dylan Lugli and

Aleah Toomalatai in Year 11. Jack Ayoub in Year 12 has also

been invited to participate in a supervisory role, when his HSC

studies permit. Congratulations to all students who participated

in the workshops. All our students maintained a high

standard of participation and performance.

Wrap With Love has arrived at

Coonabarabran High What Wrap With Love does “Cold humanity is our concern, humans caring about other humans.” In 1982 Wrap with Love began with the idea to help as many people as possible by providing warm Wraps. Each year, beautiful handmade wraps have been knitted crocheted by more than 25,000 volunteers throughout Australia. Since 1982, more than 157,000 Wraps have been sent to people in over 75 coun-tries including Australia. Can you help us warm people up with sim-ple plain knitting? Knit at home or at school.

Here’s how Using 8ply wool and 4mm needles you will knit a square 25cm x 25cm

Step 1 Cast on about 50 stitches. The exact number will depend on your knitting tension (Means how tight you pull the wool).

Step 2 Work garter stitch (plain knitting) until the square measures 25cm, then cast off. If you can‟t knit, don‟t worry, come to the library at lunchtime and we will teach you. If you have wool to donate, we will grate-fully accept it. Beginner‟s and crocheted wraps are great too! If you can already knit and would like to try different patterns go to the Wrap With Love website at: www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au/Wrap.htm for their ideas.

ANZAC Ceremony Coonabarabran High School hosted members of the

local RSL branch including President Mr Kevin Bar-rington on the last Friday of term. Year 10 students led the school through a moving commutation service dur-ing which students from Year 9, Annie Nash and Aimee Sanders read stories based on their research of local service men who fought in WWI. Elizabeth Graham and Ashley Michael gave short orations fo-cused on events during WWII, with particular empha-sis on the role of Indigenous service men and the ex-perience of prisoners of war in the Pacific.

Thank you to Mr Barrington who spoke to the as-

sembly and made a presentation of some memorabilia

from the Korean conflict, and those veterans who

were able to attend the ceremony, their presence is a

highly appreciated part of the schools commemoration

of ANZAC day. Thank you also to David Tighe who

played the bugle for the ceremony and Caitlin

McHugh, Sara Hincks and Stephen

Sanders who presided over the

Coonabarabran Open Girls Softball

Team too Good for Coonamble The Coonabarabran Open Girls Softball Team played a

cracker of a game against Coonamble in Round one of the NW knock out competition last week winning by the 10 run rule (17 to 7). Game highlights: Nattalie Schaeche and Maddee Baglee with the bat. Fielding: Impressive outs from Eugine Martin assisted by Bree McNeilly and Maddy Watton assisted by Tessa Flick. Jeannette Schaeche was solid behind the plate directing Jess TInk making her fabulous pitching debut. Overall, a great effort by all. Below: Group shot, Alesha Evans having a great day!

CHS Swimming Five Coonabarabran High students travelled to the Syd-ney Aquatic Centre from the 4

th to 6

th of April, to repre-

sent their school and the North West region at the Com-bined High School Swimming Carnival. The following Coonabarabran High students competed in individual events at the carnival: Darcy Cain, Jack Ise-dale, Kate Masman, Joshua Masman and Olivia Tilbor-ghs. All students performed very well with many taking advantage of the 2000 Olympic Games pool to achieve personal best times. Some students also witnessed div-ing rehearsals from Matthew Mitcham (2008 Olympic Diver Gold Medallist) and celebrities from the Celebrity Splash show. All students are to be congratulated on an excellent achievement, representing their school and region with distinction.

9/10 Touch On 26

th March the 9/10 Touch teams travelled to Tam-

worth for the Annual Gala Day. The girls played 4x20 minute games in very hot condi-tions. They progressed steadily throughout the day and worked hard at developing their Touch skills. Although the girls didn‟t win a game in two of their games the dif-ference was only one try. The boys had two wins, a draw and two losses to finish

3rd

overall on the day. They played some very good

Touch, particularly in attack and with a little more vigour

in defence they would compete more evenly with all

NW Trials

The North West winter trials were held in Armidale on the

28th March with 33 students attending. It was a very suc-

cessful day for Coona High with four students making

North West Teams. David Tighe (Soccer), Ellie Capewell

(Soccer) and Olivia Eastburn (Netball) were all selected

in their respective teams and will attend State Carnivals

next term. Edward Martin (15‟s Rugby League) will play

against Western Region here in Coona on May 10th. Af-

ter being named as a shadow reserve for the girl‟s Soc-

cer Teaghan Barron has been called into the team fol-

lowing the withdrawal of another player.

Open League

The Open League team had their first game in the round robin section of the University Shield during the last week of term one. They came up against a very good Glen Innes team and went down 70 points to 10. John Forrest played well, particularly in defence, whilst Travis Smith was very constructive when he had the ball in his hands. With plenty of work to be done with their defence the team will be looking for an improved performance against Narrabri in their next game early in term two.

Pictured below are students in full swing preparing for the upcoming North West Equestrian EXPO commencing on Friday 31st May and concluding on Tuesday 4th June.

National Schools Constitutional Convention On Wednesday morning, May 20, I flew from Dubbo to Sydney, then to Canberra from Sydney, in order to participate in the National Schools Constitutional Convention. 119 other students from all states in the coun-try also attended. Students from rural and metropolitan areas, government and independent schools were there to represent their communities. The topic for the 2013 National Schools Constitutional Convention was „Recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in the Constitution‟. During the engaging, intense three day program personal high-lights undoubtedly included the opportunity to hear from Key Note speakers on this topic. These speakers ranged from professors teaching Constitutional Law to speakers of Aboriginal descent, bringing perspectives on both technical and practical levels relating to the upcoming proposed referendum, which should go ahead in 2014. It is anticipated that this will move forward with bipartisan support. The opportunity to meet and be spoken to by parliamentarians such as Quentin Bryce, the current Governor General and the Honourable Peter Garrett MP, the Min-ister for School Education and Minister for Early Childhood and Youth was fascinating as these people have great influence and re-sponsibility for the future of our country. During the three days I was exposed to unbelievable opportunities, both involving the people I met while in Canberra, and the activi-ties I participated in. I intend to use this experience to enable me to share my understanding of the issues with young people and other groups in my com-

munity. Grace Leask
