Knights Visit Coonabarabran High The Newcastle Knights visit on Wednesday 20th February
created a lot of excitement in the school. High profile Knights players Willie Mason, Jeremy Smith, Matt Hilder, Jarrod Mullen, Chris Adams, Robbie Rochow and Captain Kurt Gidley made the trip to Coonabarabran along with Coach Wayne Bennett and NRL representative Alan Tongue.
Prior to coming to the High School they spent several hours at Coonabarabran Primary School. Wayne Bennett spoke to the whole school and you could have heard a pin drop. His mes-sage about commitment, team work and striving to do you best was well received by both students and staff. Wayne empha-sised that these things that lead to success on the football field are reflected in other areas such as school and work.
The Knights had also presented a cheque for $13 800 to Mayor Peter Shinton as a donation to the Mayors Bushfire Ap-peal.
All students received a Knights cap and after the formalities their biggest fan, Bill Martin, had his special autograph book and shirt signed by all of the Knights.
Although their time in the school was only brief the Knights
certainly achieved their objective, which was to lift the spirits of
a community that had so recently been devastated by bushfires.
Newcastle Knights Coach Wayne Bennett

Welcome back to all of the school com-munity. Welcome to Year 7 and to our new students. The school has wasted no time getting into learning programs and building the foundations for the year. We enjoyed wonderful success in 2012 with strong student performances
across the board and recognition of the achievements of our teachers. The HSC cohort performed very strongly across the board. Many students obtained highly sought after training opportu-nities or scholarships to pursue further study. The students seeking university entry enjoyed particular success. We wish all of our graduates the best for their futures and look for-ward to hearing of their achievements. I would like to intro-duce several new staff. Ms Plummer and Mr Heaney will be teaching Hospitality and Metals and Engineering in the TAS faculty. Mr Holden is our new Language teacher and will be based in HSIE. He will be teaching all of our Year 8 students Indonesian. We believe this language will serve our students well as Asian languages increase in importance to Australia. A new Maths Head Teacher will be appointed this term and Mr Lovegrove is covering this vacancy whilst we recruit. Meet the teachers Two great opportunities to meet our new teachers will take place at the next P&C Meeting on 25th February at 5.30pm in the Library. All parents are welcome. We would love to see you there. School Expectations I have been very impressed with student participation, uni-form and behaviour since our return to school. Students are coming to school well prepared and enthusiastic about learn-ing. Our classrooms are active and focussed and I have been pleased with the courtesy and attention I see in the classes I visit. This all gives our students the best chance to learn. Senior students – achievement in the HSC Coonabarabran High achieved some outstanding student outcomes in 2012. Our student performance in the Higher School Certificate was outstanding. HSC results were re-markable for the cohort, with Alex Tighe achieving stellar results across his courses. His second in the state in Legal Studies is a great credit to him and to Ms Doolan for her teaching. The breadth of student achievement was a great result for all of us - many students achieved their best possi-ble results with commendable teacher commitment and sup-port. I congratulate all of the school staff on the success of our students. The current Year 12 cohort met ex-students Gemma Evans, Alex Tighe, Matt and Chris Frith to hear first-hand about strategies that have worked to achieve HSC success. Mr Draper delivered the first study skills session to prepare stu-dents for the year. These students have examinations in Week 7 this term. If you have any concerns regarding your child‟s learning, please contact the school for assistance. Swimming Carnival Our carnival was a very active day with high rates of partici-pation and enjoyment amongst the students on a beautiful sunny day. Mopra swam their way to glory with a great team effort and standout performances from Kadesha Ayoub and Jack Isedale, the 12/13 Year old champions on the day. Phoebe Hensby continues her amazing achievements – she
broke two longstanding records on the day on the way to claiming the 16 Years Girls Age Champion award. Congratulations to the Sports House Captains for their com-mitment to their team and their leadership on the day. Our sport coordinators, Ms Crossingham, Mr Cousens, Mrs Jen-ner and Mr Ramage have once again managed this im-portant school event with great skill. Anniversary of Apology to Stolen Generation Twenty students accompanied Will Robinson (Aboriginal Education Officer) to commemorate the anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generation in 2008. IYLP scholar, Jayd Robinson, spoke on behalf of students and stressed the importance of the day and the aspirations of young peo-ple to address health and educational issues confronting Aboriginal people. Leadership – nominations for SRC I encourage all students to consider nominating for the School Representative Council. The group have made a real difference to our school and the experience of our students. They focus on projects to improve student participation and the school environment. They also represent the school as leaders of fundraising, volunteer activities and community involvement. I look forward to meeting and inducting our new leaders in coming weeks. Early reminder for parents and students regarding mobile phones and other devices. Please ensure that your child does not bring a mobile phone or other device to school. They are not required for learning. Students are not to have mobile phones out at school during school hours. I have made this commitment to ensure that our classrooms and playgrounds remain free of disruption and bullying. I recognise that some children may require them for family or work commitments outside school hours and our Deputy Mr Enks will work with students to ensure
that they can comply with this school rule.

Well, it‟s been a rough start to the new year and surely it can only get better from here. Miraculously, only 2 students lost their home during the bush fire. Although over 50,000ha and 53 houses were burnt, the Coonabarabran community has once again shown enormous community spirit and compassion. Even in this time of tragedy and destruction, we are the envy of other towns and cities. Fire fighters like being tasked to fires near Coonabarabran because they know they will be welcomed and appreciated. Nowhere else are fire fighters and residents who have lost their homes delivered home cooked meals day after day after day. Laurie Dawson, Blazeaid, has unapologetically stated that our community has welcomed and supported his organisation far in excess of anywhere else they have operated.
The next P&C meeting is scheduled for the Monday 25
th February 2013. One of the agenda items will be to
make sure our first fund raising activity is organised effectively. The P&C and Year12 students are working together to operate the gates at the Coonabarabran Show, on the 8
th and 9
th March 2013. This is likely to be
a lucrative activity but we will need lots of volunteers. Remember that students will need to partner up with adults.
So what is the P&C and why should you turn up at 5.30pm on the first Monday of each month? In short, the P&C is the forum where parents, carers and general citizens can learn more about the operations of Coonabarabran High School and, subsequently, contribute to the running of the school. For example, you can provide opinions on where funds should be spent, raise issues of personal concern and volunteer for fund raising activities!
We also look forward to meeting new staff that have joined the school this year and contributing to the development of programs and activities at our school.
STUDY CENTRE NOTIFICATION The Study Centre is available to students of all
abilities, from Year 7-12. It provides students an opportunity to complete homework, assessment tasks and general study in a range of subjects. It is located in the school library, where students have access to books, computers and resources to help them complete tasks and extend their knowledge and skills.
Tutors can be organised to assist students one-on-one or in groups in specific subject areas. A number of staff members from English, Maths, Science and HSIE areas provide supervision and support to the students.
For any further information please contact either Sherelle Moore (Study Centre coordinator) or Principal Mel Johnston.

Dubbo English Excursion An early start to a long day, Year 10 English 1 and a
couple of year 11 Advanced English students set out at 7:45, Dubbo bound.
After two hours of laughter we arrived at our destina-tion, Dubbo Regional Theatre. We alighted the bus and with our half dead legs we stumbled inside and admired the theatre, and when the other schools arrived, we eyed them off, stared them down and took our seats. Giggling and chattering in anticipation, we were all eager for the play „Animal Farm‟ to start. It was an amazing play with brilliant actors. They did incredible animal interpretations and had a great setting and very clever costuming. Alt-hough it was a bit confusing at times, the play was great; highly recommended. It was based on the Russian Revo-lution and used animals to portray the government and citizens during 1917.
Eighty five minutes later we applauded the actors on their performance and returned to the bus and went for lunch at McDonalds. More chatter and laughter as we enjoyed out fast food then we visited Centro.
Half an hour later we met up outside and showed each other our shopping as we boarded the bus one last time. As people slept, talked and watched Josh and Lukas play with their brand new One Direction dolls, we safely arrived home.
A huge thank you to Mrs Macintosh, Mr Gardiner and Mr Johnston for a great day. Jenna Cormie

Orion – the school‟s magazine is now available for
purchase at the High School office. It highlights special events in school life for 2012 and includes photographs of all year groups.
Mel Johnston thanked P&C for their support for the year. Notes relating to Principal’s Report
Peter Knight thanked Mel Johnston for his contribution to
the school and for his support of P&C.
A concern was raised at the P&C meeting about the time it
takes for students to log in to school computers. It was noted that it took less time if a student had previously (recently) logged in. The options for the PC‟s are being left open.
Deputy Principal’s Report – this report was combined in the Principal‟s Report as Graham Enks was unavailable for the meeting. General Business:
Tammy Samuel noted concerns on behalf of Leesa Kelly
about the timetable clash that arose this year between the year 10 Work Experience and the High School Awards Night. This clash meant that a number of year 10 students were unable to be present to receive their awards as they were completing their work experience elsewhere. Mel Johnston confirmed that steps would be taken to ensure such a clash did not occur in 2013.
Tammy Samuel also made the suggestion on Leesa
Kelly‟s behalf that the High School should co-ordinate timetables with St Lawrence‟s Primary School, Coonabarabran Primary School and Yuluwirri for key school events so to avoid possible clashes.
Summary of P&C achievements for 2012 has been held
over to 2013.
Comments on the School Management Plan were made
and discussed with there being some comments back from parents. Mel Johnston will finish amendments this week and put the latest version up on the school website next week.
There is an opportunity for P&C to promote and further
encourage students to come to school more often.
Goal to encourage even greater attendance at P&C
meetings for 2013.
Consider issuing a survey for P&C members to look at
whether a different day or time may be more convenient for a greater number of members.
Find additional ways to make people feel welcome and
feel that the P&C is a group they would like to belong to.
Option to hold a seminar occasionally in place of
standard P&C meetings – to be discussed in 2013.
P&C members to think about our options for 2013 and to
bring ideas to the next meeting.
Invite year 7 parents (2013) to next P&C meeting.
Provide a seminar to support parents of year 12
students.
Early term 4 2013, school to organise to meet up with
parents of new Year 12 students just after the students receive their half yearly report to provide support and advice.
P&C members to pull together a program of issues for
Term 1, 2013 and to discuss the major fundraiser – the raffle which will be held next year as well as scheduling in other fundraising activities throughout the year.
Issue regarding one of the P&C meetings being currently
scheduled for Monday 29th April 2013. As this is actually a pupil free day it was decided at the meeting to postpone the April meeting by one week to instead occur
on Monday 6th May 2013. Rendle Hannah moved a motion that the meeting be postponed a week. Motion seconded by Marty Wilkin. Motion carried.
Tammy Samuel brought up the possible access to
additional volunteers for the P&C generally and to the High School Canteen through the Centrelink system where people required to complete compulsory voluntary work are approved to support the P&C (including on Horse Expo Days and at other fundraising events) and Canteen. Information about this positive opportunity was sourced from the P&C Journal, the Journal of the Federation of Parents and Citizens‟ Associations of NSW, Term 4, 2012 Vol. 64 No. 4. For further details please contact the P&C Secretary through the school.
Date of Next Meeting: Monday 25th February 2013. (5.30pm High School Library all welcome). Meeting Closed: 7.05pm. If you would like to send a message to the P & C Secretary, suggest a topic, advise of an apology ot ask about upcoming speakers please forward an e-mail to: [email protected]

Sandstone & Tara Caves Excursion The Sandstone Caves and the Tara Cave are some of
the most significant sites concerning the local Aboriginal Gamilaraay people. Evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back thousands of years is displayed in the caves.
The Sandstone Caves are situated on the Newell Highway 55 km east of Baradine, Pilliga Nature Reserve. The walk is 1.7 km (1 hour return) medium grade walk around the caves and the open forest surroundings. Tara Cave however, is situated in the Warrumbungle National Park.
The Sandstone Caves are a series of cathedral type caves and overhangs situated around a large sandstone outcrop. They have been formed over many thousands of years through the weathering of the fragile rock.
There is evidence of Aboriginal rock engravings at both sites. Visitors can experience fauna such as birds, wallabies and skinks. Both sites are vegetated with a great deal of traditional Aboriginal bush tucker, giving the area more significance and making a better experience for the visitor.
On Friday 26 October, teachers from Coonabarabran High (Dr Stevenson, Mr Johnston and support staff, Mr Coe and Mr Robinson, along with prac teacher Troy Newbury) participated in an Aboriginal Cultural day experience at both caves. Nine students travelled on the excursion. They were: Jason Beattie, Shannon Doole, Steven Boney, Russell Walker, Joseph Clark, Mark Watton, Justin Antaw and Luke Cruz, Brodie Towers-Marr
Will Robinson guided the walks and shared local knowledge and yarns along the way to make it a rich cultural experience, especially for our visiting teacher. Throughout the day there was a lot of sight seeing and conversation about the sites and the local boys who attended were very respectful and well behaved as well as participating actively during all activities.
Our visiting teacher, Mr Newbury, was fascinated by the vegetation, animals and terrain around the Coonabarabran area, especially the Warrumbungles. He constantly praised our school and our students, especially the boys who were on the excursion.
Overall it was a successful day and I can confidently say that every one gained something from the experience. Since the excursion, the boys are hungry for more opportunities to learn about our local area and appreciate where we live.
CHS Equestrian Team All parents and carers of students who plan to be part
of the High School Equestrian Team attending Expo this year are invited to a meeting in the High School Com-mon Room on Tuesday 26 February at 5pm.
Students who have identified themselves as interest-ed in being part of the Team have been given a note with initial information for the year. Please read this before you come to the meeting.
We look forward to meeting everyone on Tuesday. Kellie Nash

CARPARK TRAFFICCARPARK TRAFFICCARPARK TRAFFIC
Due to Work Health & Safety concerns, we encourage parents NOT to enter the staff/senior student carpark („top‟ carpark) to drop off or collect their sons or daughters.
The additional traffic entering and departing the narrow southern entrance creates a bottleneck and adds to the probability of an accident either in that location or on the highway.
We encourage parents to consider alternative arrangements such as using the circular driveway (near the hall) or the bus bay area to allow for a smoother traffic flow and to reduce the likelihood of accidents.
Thank you for your support. Graham Enks

Swimming Carnival 2013
U14 Netball Report On Tuesday the 27
th of November, the Coonabarabran
High School‟s U14 netball team travelled to Narrabri to play in Round Two of the North West Knockout Competition. The girls started out very strong in both attack and defence to lead at the first quarter. However, Narrabri proved to be more consistent overall and unfortunately despite their continued effort the young Coonabarabran team was unsuccessful with the final score being 24 to 15. The girls showed their positive sportsmanship qualities and over the course of the past six weeks the girls have all improved their netball skills. The team consisted of Molly Atkinson, Matilda Clifton, Georgina Elton, Liesl Fretwell, Prue Gordon, Brooke King, Breeana McNeilly, Brooke Meier, Amy Sanders, Lauren Sly and Hayley Walton. Congratulations girls and better luck this year.
Our annual swimming carnival was held last Wednesday
in perfect conditions. The house captains arrived early
and decorated their areas in a sea of colour, creating a
great atmosphere. Competition was fierce throughout the
day with Mopra eventually winning with 351 points. Ti-
mor finished second with 309 points followed by Tibuc on
297 and Nandi on 222. A feature of the day was Phoebe
Hensby breaking the 16 year girls backstroke and butter-
fly records both of which were set back in 1985.
