COO-EE AUGUST 2019
Cabaret in the Edithburgh Institute
Last month, 29th June, over 150 people filled the hall to hear Michael Griffiths perform some of his favourite songs, and tell a few stories about his experiences in musical theatre. The audience was
enthusiastic, and we look forward to a similar event next year. Mike is currently in London in the Royal Albert Hall (the small venue!) telling and singing the life of Cole Porter.
Happy birthday Edithburgh...150 years old this year!
Filmed interviews with our elder residents are well underway, capturing their precious memories of a bygone time in Edithburgh.
Laughter and surprised reactions from the film crew show just how much life has changed. Snippets from the interviews will be edited into a montage to be shown, accompanied by talks from other residents, at an afternoon tea in the Troubridge Hotel on Saturday 16th November. Save this date !
Do you know how important the primary and secondary industries in Edithburgh were to all of Australia and further afield?
Earlier in the afternoon of that Saturday free guided walks can be taken around the main streets of the town, remembering the buildings and industry that made this a bustling town in its heyday.
We have a fairly comprehensive list of people to interview, we won’t be able to film all this year, but plan to continue until everyone has shared their stories. If you, or know of someone, who should be included, please contact one of the people below.
We have filmed ten and still have a list of fifty who can remember the town in better days. We would not like to exclude anyone, hopefully this might prompt anyone else with memories. All interviews completed this year will be included in a montage to be shown at the 150 birthday celebration.

Girls from all over the peninsula and beyond gathered for the annual event. Guest speaker this year was Holly Martin from Murray Bridge. Darren Braund

Welcome to everyone and thank you for your attendance tonight. We have had another solid year of progress and development at the Edithburgh Museum and many of you can take credit for our current position.
A big thankyou to all office bearers; John Giles as Vice-chair, Jan Geytenbeek as Secretary and Fund-raising Co-ordinator and Pat Russell as Treasurer.
Kath Drury thank you for your time and efforts. Also to Norma McGuire who has helped as our auditor.
As always a big thank you to all members and volunteers involved, whether it is working on the roster at the desk, volunteering in restoration efforts, participating in our working bees.
Some notable achievements/ events for the year include
1. Hospital Bay in the New shed. A huge effort Malcolm and Marie
2. Buick buckboard restoration. An enormous commitment from Darryl and crew.
3. The Kapunda Charity Car Cruise visit. A big commitment from many and a big thank you to “Sea

4. Maritime registrar recordings. Another time-consuming task in the hands of Malcolm, Marie, Pat, Alan and Kath.
5. Maritime Museum travelling exhibit “Submerged”. Our third exhibit.

White-browed Scrubwren
I feel very privileged because the White-browed Scrubwrens have chosen to breed nearby. They are using our birdbath for their morning ablutions, but unlike the honeyeaters and sparrows, they only seem to come in the mornings. In the weeks before Christmas, adults and juveniles have been coming. The Scrubwrens will respond to a call and come to chase away the intruder and they can look very angry as they try to see off the intruder.
The White-browed Scrubwren is one of our smaller birds and only weighs about 10grams and is about 12 cm from tip of beak to end of its tail.
It is a reminder to keep water available for the birds during the summer. They make great use of it. After we have been away from Edithburgh, the dry bath gets filled and within half an hour it is being used by several species.

CALAMARI BALLS
This is a favourite of mine, the recipe is from a very good friend of mine, I’m sure you all remember Betty Boo, who incidentally has moved back to Australia, but is residing in Elizabeth, Adelaide with her family. Anyway this is a bastardised version of hers.
INGREDIENTS:-
2 medium sized squid, 1 chopped finely brown onion, 2 cloves garlic, 1 tbsp minced ginger, 2 egg yolks, 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chilli if you like, sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, 1 tbsp onion powder, a crumbing station consisting of plain flour, the egg whites and a tad of milk mixed together, and breadcrumbs, oil to cook in.
METHOD:-
Clean the squid, keep the wings and tentacles, but remove the big claspers, (terrific whiting bait), put all the
squid thru a hand mincer, or blender, add the rest of the ingredients, and blitz till combined, if too sloppy add a tad cornflour.
Pop this into the fridge for 2hrs, may as well grab a brewski, after 2hrs, bring out the squid mix, and with clean hands, make up the squid balls about the size of a golf ball, roll in flour, then eggy mix and then roll in breadcrumbs. Pop back in the fridge for another 2hrs and grab another brewski.
Heat some oil in a pot to 180º and gently lower balls in and cook till golden brown, don’t overcrowd the pot, drain on paper towelling, keep going till all done. These are delicious but even better with friends and family, and serve with small cos lettuce leaves and mayo mixed with sweet chilli sauce, an esky of cold beer, it doesn’t get much better guys, these freeze beautifully uncooked, and deep fry at 175º from frozen till they float. Hope you enjoy these.

Social tennis in Edithburgh every Tuesday and Thursday at 9am.
Players must have a knowledge of the game. Become a social member of the Edithburgh tennis club - that way no court costs.
We enjoy ourselves, keep fit, play mainly doubles, share a joke, plenty of banter and go for a coffee after-wards and grateful we can still be active. The players are all ages and play to their own pace and love it. We have 3 courts and usually go for 1 hour, no need to ring just rock up when you can and don’t forget to bring your own special sense of humour - you will need it.
