    Island LifeTLWBAT: describe a holiday on a tropical island using words presented in class

    Materials: Markers or Crayons and Clean Paper for the Commercial,two tropical candy bars as motivation (in the R Bounty or Margotwork well), pictures of exotic island locations, if possible, and the SurvivalActivity on page 63 of Keep Talking in the ESI library

    Note: Vocabulary Words with numbers in front of them should be taught. Theother words are optional they will be likely answers or they are the same wordin Czech.

    (5 min) Hook: If you won the lottery and received a vacation to either an exoticisland location or high in the mountains, which place would you choose? Why?

    (5) Conversation One: You are going on holiday to Hein Island in theCaribbean. Make a list of the items that you will pack to take with you, and writea short reason as to why you need such items.

    Presentation One: Make a list of the words that they come up with, have themexplain each thing that they say. You might teach the following words forvocabulary:

    1. Swimming Costume / Swimsuit 2. Sunglasses3. Sunscreen / Suntan Lotion

    (5) Conversation Two: You are on the island. What type of things do you seeon a tropical island? What is the weather like?

    Presentation Two: Do the same. This time teach the words as vocabulary:

    (10) Conversation Three: So you have done some sightseeing.Now what do you want to do for fun -- how will you relax?What type of sports could you be playing?What will you eat and drink?

    (5-10 min) Optional, if more activity is needed:Put them in groups of four. Assign one danger from above to each group. Havethem pretend that they are coming home from a vacation gone wrong becauseof an accident that occurred relating to the word that you gave them (i.e. Zuzanawas eaten by a shark). Two students will be the travelers, two will be therelatives that are shocked and fascinated and asking tons of questions aboutwhat happened

    Monitor the groups and choose a couple of them to present their dialogue to theclass.

    (15-20 min) Practice/Production:Survival Activity from Keep Talking

    Production:(15 minutes to prepare, 15 to present, 5 for vote and conclusion)Make a commercial for your dream island.

    You and your partner(s) are the king/queen of an island and you want to attracttourists from the United States, Canada, and Britain to your island.

    Using the colors/markers/paper that I distribute, draw an advertisement for yourisland. You will then perform a commercial, which will be judged by me and byyour class. There will be an election at the end of class as to which commercial

    is the best. Whoever wins receives the coconut candy bars.

    Your commercial should use the vocabulary words I have given.It should be at least 2 minutes long and everyone should speak (in English).It should be creative and convincing.

    You will receive a mark from the teacher based on how well you follow thedirections.

    Homework:There are islands all over the world. If you could visit any of these islands, which

    island would you like to visit? Why? It may be in any climate in any place in theworld. 1 page A5
