Well, another treatment season has

come to an end. Summer started off

cool once again, turned into a rainy

season, which was followed by a

heat wave. September of 2015

ranks as Chicago’s warmest to-date

in over 10 years and the 24th

warmest of the past 144 years! As

they say around Chicago, stick

around long enough and the

weather will change!

Speaking of change, I’d like to

challenge everyone to try new

products as we approach the 2016

season. The only way to get better

is to try new products and rates to

see what works best for a given

situation. It is always good to see

everyone rotating their algaecides

and changing their modes of action

for better results. BioSafe Systems

has just introduced a new product

called Green Clean Liquid 5.0. This

has more strength than the 2.0

formulation. So far the applicators

that have used it have achieved

excellent results. Another new

product by SePRO Corporation is

SeClear G. This product is a

take-off of SeClear liquid but in a

granular formulation instead. These

are just a few examples of new

products that you may want to add

to your tool box. Every year brings

new challenges and we are here to

make sure you have the right

product for the job to meet those

challenges. Ask us about these new

products and how you can possibly

implement them in your treatment

program!

Cygnet Enterprises is also proud to

provide a free annual recycling

program to our customers. We

supply the bags and pick up the

empty herbicide containers to be

recycled. I know we all care about

the environment, so we appreciate

you taking advantage of this free

service. Jim Brown, who works in

our warehouse and handles our

deliveries, would like to thank all

our customers for recycling, triple

rinsing your containers and not

overloading the recycle bags this

year. This makes the job of

transporting and recycling the

plastic containers much easier.

Also, he thanks you for going out

of your way to help unload product,

(Continued on page 4)

After what was a pretty dry summer

and early fall here in the Northeast,

we are finally getting some rain and

a significant amount at that. In

retrospect, we are pleased to say

that the 2015 season went well and

Donna, Russell and I would like to

thank all our clients for your

business. It has been a pleasure

serving you all as always!

It has also been our privilege to

once again assist in Hydrilla

management programs in New

York state this past summer.

Implemen t ing an invas ive

management program, then

coordinating an extensive number

of components is often an

insurmountable feat. We have been

told that the onsite delivery of

products by Cygnet Enterprises,

Inc. has been a critical factor in

making these programs a success.

We look forward to assisting in

more invasive plant management

projects here in the northeast in the

future.

I would like to let everyone know

that we will be holding our next

Appl icators Symposium in

conjunction with NEAPMS’

Annual Meeting this coming

January. Our Symposium will be

held on January 12, 2016, at the

Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga

Springs, New York. Our program

will be held prior to the NEAPMS’

Pre-Conference Workshops and

will be offered at no charge.

However, you must RSVP to the

invitation, which I will be sending

out with the agenda somewhere

around the end of November 2015.

If you don’t get one and would like

to attend, please feel free to contact

me. In addition, I would like to

encourage all participants to stay

around after our symposium for the

NEAPMS meeting. If you have

never attended one I’m sure you

will find it worth your while.

Each year we look forward to the

start of the application season with

anticipation. Here on the west

coast, the beginning of this year

was perhaps met with a bit of

uncertainty as we faced one of the

most extreme droughts ever

recorded. As the year progressed,

we watched many of our customers

fa ce n ew ch a l l en ges and

circumstances never seen before.

Despite this, everyone was able to

persevere and as the 2015

application season comes to a close,

we would like to thank you all for

your continued business and

loyalty!

It was very difficult to see the

impact of the drought throughout

the state of California. The lack of

rainfall over the past few years has

produced very dry terrain resulting

in an abundance of devastating

wildfires across the state. Our

thoughts and prayers are still with

those who have lost loved ones,

their homes, pets, etc. Warmer

water temperatures in our streams

and rivers have been threatening

fish populations such as the

Chinook Salmon. “Water wars” in

the form of lawsuits are in

abundance and plaguing the media

across the state. Many are looking

to the sky for relief as we head

into the fall and winter months.

Scientists are predicting a heavy

El Nino effect that should bring the

state of California much needed

precipitation. Others speculate we

may not get the snow pack we

require if winter storm temperatures

are too high, or that the El Nino

could bring us no precipitation at

all. Regardless, we are praying for

an abundant amount of rain and

snow this winter and a wonderful

2016 season!

As we move toward the end of the

year, we like to remind everyone to

take the time to send us updated

copies of your licenses and permits.

This ensures your file is kept

up-to-date and come the start of

2016, there will be no delays in the

ordering process. Additionally,

please feel free to contact us for

information on upcoming shows,

Idaho Update By: Doug Kleweno

Greetings from the northwest and

thanks to all of our lake and

i r r i ga t ion wate r managers

throughout the area for another

rewarding year. It is has been a

busy season for all of us and it

looks like it will continue to be

busy through the fall and winter

with many water management

meetings and shows starting in

October. Look for Cygnet

Enterprises NW at the Montana

Dams and Canals Association

Show in Billings, Montana, the

second week of October, followed

by the WA Weed Conference the

early part of November in

Wenatchee, Washington. The OR

and WA water users meetings are

scheduled for early December,

followed by the ID Water Users

meeting in January and the NW

Irrigator Operator Association

meeting in February. As aquatic

specialists, all of us at Cygnet

Enterprises are very proud of our

support and participation in the

v a r i e t y o f aq u a t i c b a s ed

conferences and meetings. In

previous years these water

management groups have been out

of sight and out of mind relative to

the importance placed on terrestrial

and ag based groups until recent

federal and state NPDES permitting

changes were implemented and the

ongoing drought throughout the

western US states persevered.

Cygnet Enterprises continues to

represent and support water users

and managers at the federal and

state levels as it has for the past 40

years and we will continue our ef-

forts on your behalf. If our readers

have specific concerns that you feel

need to be addressed, please let our

sales representatives know so we

can participate in the cause.

Not to sound like a broken record,

but it was warmer than usual this

winter and spring and continued to

be warmer through the summer

than it has in previous years. This

created a challenge for many of our

irrigation district water managers.

The winter snow pack in the

Cascade Mountains was almost

non-existent and many irrigation

districts in Washington state that

receive water rights from the

Yakima River were restricted to

less than 50% of their annual water

allocation. This declaration of

drought has been shocking to many

residents of the “Evergreen State”

that take water for granted, since

most of the population (greater

Seattle/Tacoma area) lives on the

west side of the Cascade Mountains

where the winter rains are

prevalent. Our neighbors to the

south in California have been living

with drought for many years and

u n t i l n o w e v e r yo n e w a s

disconnected from those problems

and challenges that were discussed

over coffee reading about it in the

morning paper. Many forward

thinking water managers are

already attending meetings and

interacting with their counterparts

in the south to learn more about

better water management practices,

because there is a lot that can be

learned from those folks that have

been living with water shortages for

many years now.

In addition to the problems our

irrigation districts encountered, we

also received a lot of calls from our

professional applicators that

manage lakes, reservoirs, and HOA

water bodies. Algae blooms were

probably the largest water

management challenge this

summer. The water nutrient levels

and temperatures were at record

highs and water levels were at

record lows, making it a great year

for algae growth. Feedback we

received from our customers

indicates that many state and local

water body owners are coming to

the realization that they need to

budget for and manage the water on

a proactive basis and not wait until

there is a toxic algae bloom to

suddenly decide something has to

be done.

If you are a water manager and

have questions about how to best

m a n a g e o r o p t i m i z e t h e

management practices of your

water, please contact your local

Cygnet Enterprises Representative

for assistance. Have a great fall

and Holiday Season from all of us

at Cygnet Enterprises NW!

Hydrilla Treatment on the Erie Canal in New York Mac Bellaud, President, Aquatic Control Technology

Monoecious hydrilla was initially discovered in the Tonawanda Creek section of the Erie Canal in

September 2012 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This prompted a multi-agency effort to

determine the extent of the infestation, evaluate possible management alternatives and

implement control efforts to prevent further spread of this highly invasive plant. The infestation

is located less than one-mile from the confluence with the Niagra River and only ten miles from

Lake Erie.

Following the original discovery, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) – Buffalo District was

designated the lead agency on the project and worked with Michael Netherland, Ph.D. of the U.S.

Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to develop assessment and management

plans. Survey efforts were undertaken during the 2013 season to identify the full extent of the

infestation. Hydrilla was found growing over approximately 15 miles of the Tonawanda Creek

section of the Erie Canal, which covered a total area of approximately 360 acres. Most of the

hydrilla growth was patchy and found along the immediate shorelines, but the infestation was

widespread. After considering numerous management strategies, plans were formulated for a

demonstration herbicide treatment project utilizing Aquathol K™ (endothall) herbicide. The

project involved slowing the water flow in the canal for a 48-hour period and then treating the

western half of the canal, which was approximately 8 miles long and 200 acres in area. Water

flow was then resumed in an easterly direction after 48-hours in an effort to expose the more

widely scattered hydrilla in the eastern half of the canal. The objective was to conduct the

treatment once the majority of tubers had sprouted, but before new turions were produced. The

USACE-Buffalo District worked with a local consulting firm, Ecology and Environment, Inc., to

coordinate the project including the required permitting, notifications, monitoring and to oversee

the herbicide treatment program. Aquatic Control Technology was selected to perform the actual

herbicide application.

The initial treatment was performed on July 22, 2014. The final treatment protocol called for

application of 1855 gallons of Aquathol K to

the 8-mile section of Tonawanda Creek to

be completed in one day. Aquatic Control

Technology utilized two conventional work

skiffs and one airboat to apply the

herbicide with subsurface injection

systems. Cygnet Enterprises,

Inc. provided and delivered

the Aquathol K™ in 250

gallon totes. Multiple boat

ramps were used throughout

the 8-mile section of the

canal to transfer the

herbicide into the tanks on (Continued on page 8)

Hydrilla Treatment on the Erie Canal in New York (Continuation from page 7)

board the spray boats. The application was successfully completed in approximately seven hours.

Residual flow in the canal diluted the herbicide concentrations in the westernmost portion of the

treatment area, which resulted in incomplete control of hydrilla. A spot-treatment of

approximately 26 acres was performed on September 16, 2014, in which 261 gallons of Aquathol K

were applied.

Results of the 2014 treatment program were extremely favorable. Late season monitoring

performed by the USACE and ERDC suggested that there was an overall 90% reduction in the

hydrilla tuber bank and an 89% reduction in hydrilla frequency throughout the treatment area.

The project goals were achieved.

Hydrilla control efforts continued in 2015 with ongoing monitoring and treatment. Even though

hydrilla regrowth was less abundant, plants were still distributed throughout the treatment area,

so the entire 8-mile section was targeted for re-treatment, with a few minor modifications to the

actual treatment area and the application approach: adjustments were also made to better

control and manage water flow following treatment; and two small patches of hydrilla located

outside of the targeted treatment area were isolated and treated using limno-barriers to contain

herbicide concentrations in order to evaluate future spot-treatment possibilities. Approximately

7-miles of the canal were targeted for treatment. The entire 7-mile section was treated on

Day 1 – July 28, 2015, and then approximately 25-acres at the western end of the canal was

re-treated on Day 2 – July 29, 2015 to try and improve the herbicide

concentration-exposure-time. A total of 2091 gallons of Aquathol K were applied over the

two-day period. Aquatic Control Technology again used three boats to complete the treatment,

but due to higher water levels an airboat was not needed and three conventional work skiffs were

used instead. Cygnet Enterprises, Inc. again provided and delivered the Aquathol K in 250-gallon

totes and a similar strategy was used to transfer the product to the boats at designated boat

ramps located along the 7-mile stretch of the canal.

Initial qualitative monitoring work following the 2015 treated indicated that the treatment was

successful. One small patch was identified upstream of the treatment area, but closer to the

Niagra River and was a potential threat to re-infestation or spread. The patch was enclosed with

a limno-barrier and spot-treated on September 8-9, 2015. Results of the comprehensive

post-treatment monitoring effort are not available at this time.

The hydrilla treatments performed on the Erie Canal in 2014 and 2015 have effectively controlled

this highly invasive plant and reduced the potential for spread into interconnected waterways.

Management efforts are expected to continue in 2016, but a more targeted, area-selective,

spot-treatment approach will likely be employed.

Lonza is pleased to welcome the newest member of our aquatics family. Dave Nicholson is our new

Midwest Regional Sales Manager. As a former business owner, an applicator, and excellent

relationship manager, Dave Nicholson has more than 15 years of experience in aquatic treatment

products. In 1993, Dave was hired as an aquatic technician and began his career early. On his first

day, he brought his fishing pole and when asked why, he stated, “Because at some point today we

will break for lunch on water, and instead of eating, I plan to fish.”

He was told to leave his fishing rod at the office and take the day to learn what aquatic technicians

really do! On this day and ever since, Dave knew he wanted to dedicate his career, grow his

knowledge, and educate others in water management. Dave is a graduate of Grand Valley State

University with a Bachelor of Science and Natural Resource Management. He is well known for

being extremely approachable allowing him to quickly develop relationships. He has earned the

recognition and respect of being a leader in his most recent role prior to joining Lonza. Dave resides

in West Michigan with his better half Jennifer, along with their two children and two dogs. His

family lives on a private lake and thoroughly loves the “lake life.” Dave looks forward to meeting all

of you in person and contributing to the success of your business!

Cygnet Enterprises, Inc. is dedicated to bringing you the widest array of pond and lake management products available from proven names with proven results. We select only the best products for your management needs, whether it is for a small pond or a large lake. We strive to make sure your satisfaction with your water feature is the highest it can be,

and have been in the business for 40 years because of our efforts.

A highly concentrated water dye, Cygnet Select Extreme shades your water, limiting the ability of

sunlight to reach the bottom of your water body. It also improves appearance of your lake or pond by shading the water a deep, rich blue. For ease of application and clean-up, this

concentrated dye is available in wide-mouth, quart size containers. (Apply 10-14 ounces per acre foot of water.)

Excess organics are not only found suspended in the water column, but also in the form of “muck” build-up on the bottom of your water body. Over time, this muck layer can affect not only the clarity of your water, but it can reduce the depth of your lake or pond as well. Cygnet

Mukk Busster is a pellet formulation of naturally occurring pond bacteria and enzymes. The

pellets are designed to sink to the bottom in specific areas that need attention and digest the organic muck and build-up. (Treatment rates for Cygnet Mukk Busster are 20lbs per acre initial dose,

and 10lbs per acre each month after as a regular maintenance dose.)

*CYGNET MUKK BUSSTER

*It should be noted that because these are biological/water dye treatments they are NOT herbicides/algaecides and cannot be expected to behave, nor are they represented as such. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s label.

Another highly concentrated water dye, Cygnet Select Extreme Black comes in dissolvable

packets, making application a breeze! This dye works similarly to the Cygnet Select and

Cygnet Select Extreme blue dyes, except the black colorant provides a gorgeous reflective

finish! If you want that perfect “mirrored” pond effect, look no further than the Cygnet

Select Extreme Black! (Just toss in 1-2 packets per acre foot of water; packets are 6 oz each.)

*CYGNET SELECT EXTREME BLACK

Cygnet Bioblend II is a mix of naturally occurring pond bacteria and enzymes formulated to

biodegrade excess organics suspended in the water column, often affecting water clarity. Formulated in a water soluble packet (wsp), Cygnet Bioblend II can simply be tossed into your

lake or pond. The outer packet dissolves, allowing the bacteria and enzymes to disperse throughout the water column and digest the suspended organics.

(Apply 8lbs per acre for an initial dose, and 4lbs per acre per month after that as a booster dose

throughout the season.)

Science has proven that through the responsible use of aquatic herbicides and algaecides, we are able to successfully control nuisance aquatic plants and algae with minimal impact to the environment. However,

with today’s modern “green movement,” I am sure you have received a call or two from concerned customers that would like to completely “fix” their pond problems without ever using an herbicide or algaecide.

Fortunately, Cygnet Enterprises, Inc. has partnered with some of the leading manufacturers in the industry to offer a range of products which allow these customers to obtain the results they desire – a healthier water

body that is free of pesticides!*

THEIR POND OR LAKE? CYGNET IS HERE TO HELP!

Cygnet Select is a food-grade water dye used to aid in the aesthetic appeal of any water body.

Use of this dye will not only shade your water, allowing less sunlight to reach the bottom of your water body, but it will also give it a beautiful and much richer appearance. (1 gallon treats 4 acre-feet of water.)

Hydrilla was first imported into North America in the late 1950s, during what was called the aquarium trade. It was discovered as an invasive in Miami around 1960. By 1970 hydrilla was established in major wa-ter bodies of all drainage basins in Florida. Hydrilla impacts water bodies, environmentally and economi-cally. It can out-compete many native and non-native aquatic plant species. Heavy populations of hydrilla can impact fish populations. Irrigation canals, dams and power plants can become clogged. Millions of dol-lars are spent each year controlling the spread of hydrilla. Growth: Hydrilla is a submersed, invasive aquatic plant. It can grow and spread in extremely low light conditions (less than 1% of full sunlight). Its unique ability to use low light, allows for photosynthesis to begin early in the day. Other aquatic plants do not have this capability and are therefore out-competed by hydrilla. Dense canopy beds are formed due to the majority of biomass that concentrates in the top portion of the plant. Canopy beds can inhibit native plant species from growing. Reproduction takes place from plant fragments, tubers/turions, and seed. Once established, hydrilla can grow up to 1 inch per day. Hydrilla in Retention Ponds: Natureworks manages two community storm water retention ponds that are part of a scenic area near Pittsburgh, PA. There is a very high turnover rate with these ponds and flow through rate is extremely high during any storm event. Close to the two ponds are playgrounds, swimming pools, and basketball, baseball, and soccer fields. The smaller pond is about 0.2 acres and the larger pond is about 0.35 acres. Approxi-mately 100 homes drain into the smaller pond and 200 homes into the larger pond. It’s not exactly clear on how hydrilla arrived in these two ponds, but a theory is either from a water garden pond or from bird de-posits. There are 12 additional storm water ponds in the community, but hydrilla has only been discovered in these two ponds. Management: Herbicides with a short contact time were recommended, due to the high turnover rate in these ponds. Re-ward® and Stingray® herbicides were selected to quickly control hydrilla populations. The rates applied were 0.37 ppm Reward and 100 ppb Stingray. The first application was made on June 12, 2015. The second visit was on June 30, 2015. No application was needed, as the first treatment controlled 100% of the hydrilla populations in both retention ponds. Residents reported control within 5 days post treatment. Initially, her-bicide applications of Reward alone and Reward / Clipper® were attempted with very little effects or re-

sults. The Reward and Stingray combination proves to be most effective.

EarthTec QZ (QZ) is an EPA-approved molluscicide for control of quagga and zebra mussels.

QZ’s unique liquid formulation is proven effective at achieving complete mortality in adult ze-

bra and quagga mussels.

QZ is NSF-certified to ANSI Standard 60 for drinking water, making it an excellent approach for controlling the

spread and infestation of this devastating species. EarthTecQZ can be applied in lakes and reservoirs. It is a

rapidly-dispersing product that is immediately bioavailable. The zebra mussels do not detect a thread and

readily ingest the QZ. Studies have confirmed complete mortality within a 48-96 hr period of time. It has also

shown to be effective at concentrations that are safe for most fish and other non-target organisms.

Advantages of EarthTec QZ:

EarthTecQZ is NSF-certified for drinking water.

EPA Approved for reservoirs and lakes.

The Copper is formulated in the biologically-active form (as cupic ion, CU++), and stays in solutions until it

encounters a cell wall to bind to and penetrate, so virtually all of the copper applied is effective, with no

copper or other waste penetrating into bottom sediments.

Long history of effective use with no negative impacts on fish and other non-targets.

It is a liquid formulation that does not required mixing, thus greatly reducing time and labor for applica-

tion.
