Bid Process-The bid process begins with an Owner or Developer deciding to build a new structure, or modify or add to an existing structure or property. The Owner or Developer contacts an Architect, and the Architect converts the Owner’s needs to set of plans, specifications, qualifications, and requirements in the form of a bid package. The bid package is then made available to the construction industry for pricing of the project. The qualified contractor submitting the lowest bid is usually awarded the contract. Bid Shopping-A practice by which contractors, before and after their bids are submitted, attempt to obtain prices from potential subcontractors and material suppliers that are lower than the contractors' original estimates from which their bids are based. After a contract is awarded, they may seek to induce subcontractors to reduce the subcontract price included in the bid. Bitumastic-Mixtures of hydrocarbons and other substances found in asphalt and tar. Bitumen occurs naturally or are produced from petroleum and coal. Block/Cinder Block-A hollow concrete 'brick' often 8"x 8"x16" in size. Block out-To install a box or barrier within a foundation wall to prevent the concrete from entering an area (i.e. foundation walls are sometimes ‘blocked’ to allow for mechanical pipes to pass through the wall, to install a crawl space door, and to depress the concrete at a garage door location).

Blueprint(s)-A type of copying method. The drawing of a structure which is prepared by an Architect or designer for the purpose of design, planning, estimating, securing permits, and actual construction.

Bollard-One of a series of short posts preventing vehicles from entering an area. Bollards may be used as a stand for mounting outside feature lightning.
