Page 6: Controls Yellow Nutsedge NUTGRASS 'NIHILATOR

Nutgrass ’Nihilator is effective mainly through contactaction; therefore, all plants must be thoroughly covered withspray.

In California, Nutgrass ’Nihilator is registered for use onlyin established turf to control yellow nutsedge.

Weeds controlled by Nutgrass ’Nihilator in turf are annualsedges*, yellow nutsedge, spurweed*, lambsquarters*,Venice mallow*, shepherdspurse*, smartweed*, chickweed*,common groundsel*, ladysthumb*, jimsonweed*, galinsoga*,common purslane*, cocklebur*, beggarticks*, wild mustard*,wild poinsettia*, wild buckwheat*, velvetleaf*, Canadathistle*, and musk thistle*.

Weeds suppressed by Nutgrass ’Nihilator include:common ragweed*, giant ragweed*, wild sunflower*, andmorningglory*. Some weeds not controlled include: purplenutsedge, pigweed, plantain, dandelion, onion/garlic, woodsorrel, and spurge.

*Not Registered For Use In California.

APPLICATION INFORMATIONNutgrass ’Nihilator may be used on established bluegrass, fescue, bentgrass, bermudagrass, bahiagrass, centipede-grass, zoysiagrass, ryegrass, and St. Augustinegrass. Referto Table 1, Application Rates for Established Turf forrecommended rates of Nutgrass ’Nihilator and volumesof water.

Apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator postemergently to weeds that areactively growing and under good soil moisture conditions. Ifdesired control of yellow nutsedge or Canada thistle is notobtained with the first application, make a second applicationin 10-14 days or when new growth appears.

In the northern United States, yellow nutsedge can emergefrom May through July, whereas in the southern UnitedStates, nutsedge and broadleaf weeds can emergethroughout the year. Therefore, initial applications should beplanned when most plants have emerged. If new plantsemerge later in the season, make a second application of

5

Page 7: Controls Yellow Nutsedge NUTGRASS 'NIHILATOR

Nutgrass ’Nihilator in accordance with the label directions. In unmowed turf, make the first application after emergencebut before yellow nutsedge, annual sedge, and Canada thistleare 8 inches tall. Annual broadleaf weeds should be no tallerthan 4 inches.

Thorough spray coverage of yellow nutsedge is essential formaximum control. For optimum control do not mow within3 days before or after application. For sedges, do not mowwithin 5 days of application.

MIXINGFill the tank of a thoroughly clean sprayer one-half totwo-thirds full with clean water. Add Nutgrass ’Nihilatorand shake or stir the spray solution so that Nutgrass’Nihilator and water mix thoroughly. Add the remainingvolume of water and shake or stir the spray solution to mixthoroughly. Mix only enough spray solution for one usage;a fresh spray mixture should be used for each application.

ADDITION OF OIL CONCENTRATEA nonphytotoxic oil concentrate (commonly referred to as oilconcentrate) may be added to the spray tank for certain weedproblems. The oil concentrate must contain either apetroleum or vegetable oil base and must meet all thefollowing criteria: be nonphytotoxic, contain only EPA-exemptingredients, provide good mixing quality in the jar test (seebelow), and be successful in local experience. The exactcomposition of suitable products will vary; however, vegetable and petroleum oil concentrates should containemulsifiers which provide good mixing quality. Highly refinedvegetable oils have been observed to be more satisfactorythan unrefined vegetable oils. With the addition of oilconcentrate to Nutgrass ’Nihilator, a slight leaf burn mayoccur when relative humidity and temperatures are high.Refer to your supplier of Nutgrass ’Nihilator for informationconcerning successful local experience prior to purchasingany oil concentrate.

Rate of Oil ConcentrateUse 0.75 fluid ounce per 1,000 sq. ft. or a proportionateamount for other sized areas.

RESTRICTIONS AND LIMITATIONSIn California, Nutgrass ’Nihilator is registered for use onlyin established turf to control yellow nutsedge.

Do not apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator to turf that has beenunder stress such as drought, cold temperature or injuryfrom other herbicides.

Do not apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator to any newly seeded ornewly sprigged turf until seedlings or sprigs are wellestablished, as injury may result.

Do not apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator to golf course greens orcollars.

In perennial ryegrass, apply no more than 0.75 fluid ounceper 1,000 sq. ft. at one time and make subsequentapplications no less than 21 days later.

Do not apply more than 1.5 fluid ounces of Nutgrass’Nihilator per 1,000 sq. ft. per calendar year. Do not exceeda total of 0.367 ounce of active ingredient (bentazon) per1,000 sq. ft. per application or 0.73 ounce of activeingredient (bentazon) per 1,000 sq. ft. per calendar year. Onefluid ounce of Nutgrass ’Nihilator contains 0.5 ounce ofbentazon.

Rainfall or sprinkler irrigation soon after application (within8 hours) may nullify the effectiveness of Nutgrass’Nihilator.

Clean the sprayer thoroughly before applying Nutgrass’Nihilator, particularly if a herbicide with a potential to injurethe turf to be sprayed with Nutgrass ’Nihilator was used.

Page 9: Controls Yellow Nutsedge NUTGRASS 'NIHILATOR

When treating turf with Nutgrass ’Nihilator, avoid over-the-top spraying of adjacent ornamental trees, shrubs, andflowers. Spraying near the base of established ornamentaltrees, shrubs, and flowers should not result in injury exceptfor sycamore and rhododendron.

Spray EquipmentHand-held pump-up, knapsack, or hose-end type sprayersare suitable for applying Nutgrass ’Nihilator. Do not sprayduring windy conditions because drifting spray may causedamage to desired ornamental plants. Rinse equipment withsoap and water after use.Sprayer Calibration SuggestionsHand Sprayers:1. Stake off a 400 sq. ft. area of turf for practice. This is an

area 20 ft. (7 steps) x 20 ft.2. Add a measured quantity (1.5 gallons for example) of

water to the sprayer and uniformly spray the 400 sq. ft.area. Measure water remaining and thereby determine theamount applied per 400 sq. ft. area. (Note: A minimum of3 pints/400 sq. ft. is recommended.)

3. Prepare spray solution according to Application RateTable for Established Turf. Example: Assume that inStep 2 the 400 sq. ft. area was uniformly covered with 0.5gallon of water. Referring to the table, add Nutgrass’Nihilator at the rate of 2-4 teaspoons per 0.5 gallon ofwater for each 400 sq. ft. of turf to be sprayed. (Note: Useof this mixture for spot spraying of individual weeds mayresult in an excessive dosage and possible turf injury.

Hose-end Applicator:A procedure similar to the above may be followed forcalibrating hose-end sprayers. Half-fill container with waterto an even mark on the “gallons” scale and note thegallonage level. Spray the 400 sq. ft. area, noting the newgallonage reading, and thereby determine the amount ofwater used to spray the area. Then proceed as in Step 3above.

ORNAMENTALS SITES(NOT REGISTERED FOR USE IN CALIFORNIA)

GENERAL INFORMATIONNutgrass ’Nihilator is intended for selective post-emergence control of certain broadleaf weeds and sedges.

Refer to Table 3, Application Rate Table for OrnamentalSites for recommended rates of Nutgrass ’Nihilator andwater volumes.

Nutgrass ’Nihilator does not control grasses. Nutgrass’Nihilator is effective mainly through contact action;therefore, weeds must be thoroughly covered with spray.Large weed canopies shelter smaller weeds and preventadequate spray coverage. Some leaf-speckling and leaf-bronzing may occur under certain conditions. (SeeRestrictions and Limitations section.)

Nutgrass ’Nihilator may be applied as a directed sprayaround all ornamental plants except as restricted in thislabel.

Page 11: Controls Yellow Nutsedge NUTGRASS 'NIHILATOR

TIMING OF APPLICATIONMake postemergence applications of Nutgrass ’Nihilatorearly, when weeds are small and actively growing and beforeweeds reach the maximum size listed in Table 3,Application Rate Table for Ornamental Sites. Earlyapplication to weeds produces the most beneficial effect onweed control (exception: yellow nutsedge and Canadathistle), allows use of the lower rate (depending on weedspecies), and makes it easier to obtain thorough spraycoverage. Delay in application which permits weeds toexceed the maximum size stated will result in inadequatecontrol.

Do not cultivate or mow within 5 days before or afterapplication of Nutgrass ’Nihilator.

WATER VOLUMEApply recommended rates of Nutgrass ’Nihilator with aminimum of 0.5 gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft.

MIXINGFill the tank of a thoroughly clean sprayer half to two-thirdsfull with clean water. Add Nutgrass ’Nihilator and shake orstir the spray solution so that Nutgrass ’Nihilator and watermix thoroughly. Add the remaining volume of water andshake or stir the spray solution to mix thoroughly. Mix onlyenough spray solution for one usage; a fresh spray mixtureshould be used each application.

ADDITION OF OIL CONCENTRATEA nonphytotoxic oil concentrate (commonly referred to asoil concentrate) may be added to the spray tank for certainweed problems. The oil concentrate must contain either apetroleum or vegetable oil base and must meet thefollowing criteria: 1) be nonphytotoxic, 2) contain only EPA-exempt ingredients, 3) provide good mixing quality, and 4)be successful in local experience. The exact composition ofsuitable products will vary; however, vegetable andpetroleum oil concentrates should contain emulsifierswhich provide good mixing quality. For vegetable oilconcentrates, it has been observed that highly refined

10

24299 Nutgrass (pt) BKLT 6/29/06 10:03 AM Page 10

Page 12: Controls Yellow Nutsedge NUTGRASS 'NIHILATOR

vegetable oils are more satisfactory than unrefinedvegetable oils.

With the addition of oil concentrate to Nutgrass ’Nihilator,a slight leaf burn may occur when relative humidity andtemperature are high. Refer to your supplier of Nutgrass’Nihilator for information concerning successful localexperience prior to purchasing any oil concentrate.

Rate of Oil ConcentrateFor 0.5 to 1.0 gallon per 1,000 sq. ft., use 0.75 fluid oz.(5 teaspoons). For 1.0-2.0 gallons per 1,000 sq. ft., use1.5 fluid ounces (10 teaspoons).

MixingFill the tank of a thoroughly clean sprayer half to two-thirdsfull with clean water. Add Nutgrass ’Nihilator and shake orstir the spray solution so that Nutgrass ’Nihilator and watermix thoroughly. Add the oil concentrate and the remainingvolume of water. Again, shake or stir the spray solution sothat the Nutgrass ’Nihilator, oil concentrate, and water mixthoroughly. Mix only enough spray solution for one usage; afresh spray mixture should be used each application.

RESTRICTIONS AND LIMITATIONSDo not apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator to desirable plants thathave been subject to stress conditions such as hail damage, flooding, drought, extreme heat or widely fluctuatingtemperatures, as crop injury may result.

Do not apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator if desirable plants showinjury (leaf phytotoxicity and/or plant stunting) produced byany other prior herbicide applications, because this injurymay be enhanced and/or prolonged.

Do not apply Nutgrass ’Nihilator during prolonged periodsof drought or during unseasonably cold weather asunsatisfactory weed control may result. Rainfall or overheadirrigation soon after application (within 8 hours) may nullifythe effectiveness of Nutgrass ’Nihilator.

Do not apply more than 1.5 fluid ounces of Nutgrass’Nihilator per 1,000 sq. ft. per calendar year.

11

24299 Nutgrass (pt) BKLT 6/29/06 10:03 AM Page 11

Page 13: Controls Yellow Nutsedge NUTGRASS 'NIHILATOR

Do not exceed a total of 0.367 ounce of active ingredient(bentazon) per 1,000 sq. ft. per application or 0.73 ounce ofactive ingredient (bentazon) per 1,000 sq. ft. per calendaryear. One fluid ounce of Nutgrass ’Nihilator contains 0.5ounce of bentazon.

Clean sprayer thoroughly prior to application of Nutgrass’Nihilator, particularly if a herbicide was used which has thepotential to injure the ornamental plants to be sprayed withNutgrass ’Nihilator.

POST-DIRECTED APPLICATIONSNutgrass ’Nihilator should be applied when weeds areactively growing and before they reach the maximum sizelisted in the Application Rate Table for OrnamentalSites.

Nutgrass ’Nihilator should be applied around landscapeand ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants as adirected spray and away from the foliage of desired plants, unless otherwise directed.

Injury may occur with post-directed application of Nutgrass’Nihilator when used under the tree line or over the roots ofsycamore and over the roots of rhododendron. Do not use ifthe risk of injury to these plants is not acceptable.

ORNAMENTAL SITES – (Not registered for use in California) Nutgrass ’Nihilator may be applied over-the-top of certainornamental species listed in Table 2.

Notice to UserDue to variability within species and in application techniquesneither the manufacturer nor the Seller has determinedwhether or not Nutgrass ’Nihilator can be safely used onall nonbearing food crops, ornamentals and other nonfoodcrops under all conditions. It is, therefore, recommended thatthe user should determine if Nutgrass ’Nihilator can beused safely prior to broad use.
