MethodOnly English journals fulfilled the qualification criteria to

be indexed by the ISI with known impact factors (IF)

announced at beginning of 2010 were included for evaluation.

We calculated the number of all articles published from

the beginning of 2007 up to October 2010, the number of total

citations and citations from authors outside Iran and Turkey

for each journal. We although selected all articles cited at least

6 times by authors outside both countries and analyzed their

contents in relation to the originality and the novelty as well as

their contribution to the present knowledge.

Page 3: Contribution of Iran and Turkey to the World Medical Science

Method

For evaluation of scientific contribution of

both countries 61 out of 310 international

journals with impact factor of 6 or more

with high clinical and basic importance were

selected and articles from Iran and Turkey

published during 2007 up to october 2010

were chosen .

Page 4: Contribution of Iran and Turkey to the World Medical Science

Among 154 approved Iranian journals, 46 are

only in English, Twenty-one out 46 English

journals are indexed in ISI.

Twelve of ISI-indexed Iranian journals,

published since 2007 have known IF.

Turkey has 28 ISI-indexed English journals, 15

of them 0nly have known impact factor.

Conclusion

1- English Medical Journals from Iran

and Turkey have very low impact factors

2-Every one out 3 articles from Turkey

and every one out of 5 articles from Iran

are cited only one time by foreign

authors.

Page 18: Contribution of Iran and Turkey to the World Medical Science

3- Scientists of both countries prefer to publish their

valuable works in international journals with high reputation

4- As very few articles in Iranian or Turkish English

journals had high citation rate, the lack of citation of

other articles by foreign authors is due to low quality of

their contents

5-Articles from Turkey have lower self-citation rate than that of

Iran (33% vs 62%).

Conclusion

Page 19: Contribution of Iran and Turkey to the World Medical Science

6- By the same high quality ,Turkey had 60% more high quality studies, especially randomized controlled trials, published in high reputation journals than Iran.

7- Randomized clinical studies , new drug regimen studies or diseases of the regions, but not research in basic science have high citation by foreign authors
