Contrast clauses

Used to introduce a dependent clause, which is joined to form a complex sentence.
Position: use a comma if the DC comes before the IC; do not use a comma if the DC comes after the IC.
Examples:
Although the company’s sale increased last year, its net profit declined.
The company’s net profit declined last year ,although its sales increased.
Subordinating conjunctions 從屬連接
Despite: it has the same meaning like although,but it follows by noun or v+ing
Example:Despite increased sales, the company’s profit
declined last quarter.
Because: is used to express expected results.Example:I didn’t go swimming because the weather was
cold.
3. Others
Whereas / while
While and whereas are used to show direct contrast.
EX:
-While I was studying, the phone rang.
- San Francisco is cool during the summer, whereas Los Angeles is generally hot.
Exercises
1)……his intelligence, he got low marks.
(Despite-Although-However-In spite)
2) He is an expert at computers…..he’s only 13.

3) He didn’t go to work….he was ill.
