GOOD MORNING…
1.Please submit your perspective drawings with completed rubric and reflection questions in the folder on Ms. Brown’s desk.
2.Please get out your sketchbook and a pen. Open to a new page and draw your non dominant hand.
CREATING SHAPES AND FORMS WITH LINES
An Introduction to CONTOUR LINE
GOALS
Understand the meaning of contour lines.
Understand the function of contour lines in drawings.
Apply new knowledge of contour lines and synthesize understanding of elements and principles to create a dynamic composition from observation.
REVIEW
LINEA line is a mark or stroke that is long in proportion to its width. Lines are the fundamental marks used in drawing.
There are three uses for line in art:• Contour - used to define edges• Divide space - used to separate areas in an image• Decoration - used to adorn or embellish
CONTOUR LINE: FRENCH word meaning “OUTLINE”. Form is created through LINES varying in thickness and proximity rather than VALUE and SHADOW.
WHICH DRAWING OF AN EAR IS AN EXAMPLE OF CONTOUR LINE DRAWING?
BLIND CONTOUR LINES
Drawings created by careful observation WITHOUT looking at your paper OR picking up your pencil.
Paul Klee, born 1879
BLIND CONTOUR LINES
• Teach you how to “SEE”. • Move pencil as you move eye around object. • Connect eye, mind and hand so you are
drawing what you SEE not what you THINK you see.
YOUR TURNYou will create a continuous blind contour
drawing on your non-dominant hand.
1.Put sketchbook on lap and under table so you cannot see it.
2.Position your non-dominant hand comfortably in front of you and observe its form.
3.Beginning with your thumb, slowly begin to draw your hand in your sketchbook, moving your pen as you move your eyes.
4.DO NOT LOOK DOWN!5.DO NOT PICK UP YOUR PENCIL
REPEAT…with your DOMINANT HAND…
Now choose an object and hold it in your non dominant hand.
Follow the same steps to create a continuous blind contour drawing
of your hand holding the object.
REMEMBER: 1. MOVE YOUR PEN AS YOUR EYES SLOWLY
MOVE AROUND THE OBJECT 2. USE ONE CONTINUOUS LINE3. DO NOT LIFT YOUR PENCIL4. NO PEEKING!…I will know if your
cheated.
Contour vs. Blind Contour
CONTINUOUS CONTOUR LINE DRAWING
On a new page in your sketchbook draw your hand in 3 different poses only using a CONTOUR LINE and
DO NOT PICK UP YOUR PENCIL.
Consider the placement of your hands on the paper. You may look at your paper, but 80% of the time you should be
looking at your hand.
TWO EXAMPLES OF CONTOUR LINE DRAWINGS OF LEAVES.
WHICH DRAWING USES A VARIETY OF LINE WEIGHTS TO BETTER DESCRIBE THE WAY THE LEAF LOOKS?
DRAWING TIP: Thickness of your line should change in places where two lines intersect (becomes darker).

HOW DOES THIS ARTIST EMPHASIZE AREAS OF SHADOW IN THIS DRAWING?
THICK vs. THIN / DARK vs. LIGHTAPPLICATION: press harder on your pencil where you would like darker, thicker lines and use less pressure for lighter lines.
> ‘B’ pencils are softer / greater variation in the lines they create.
> ‘H’ pencils are harder and make lighter lines.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, born 1864

WHERE IS THE CAST SHADOW IN THIS IMAGE?
> HOW IS THE CAST SHADOW CREATED?
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LINES ARE USED TO DEFINE DIFFERENT AREAS.
>POINT OUT 3 CONTRASTING TYPES OF LINES (ie. curved, smooth, jagged, straight)?
PRACTICE CONTOUR LINES1.Gather 5 objects and place them in
front of you in an interesting arrangement.
2.On a new page in your sketchbook draw the objects only using CONTOUR LINES. • Consider: line thickness and
darkness. • Remember do not shade objects.• Draw what you see, not what you
think you see.
CONTOUR AND COMPOSITION
YOU MUST ALWAYS CONSIDER YOUR COMPOSITION
HOW DOES THIS ARTIST CREATE AN INTERESTING OR DYNAMIC COMPOSITION? (think about the elements and principles….)
Which composition is more dynamic and why?
The drawing with the chair:1.uses each corner of the composition differently2. follows the rule of thirds (asymmetry) 3.uses diagonal lines to lead the eye around the page

Nice drawing AND
composition
Pay particular attention to the level of detail you can capture with contour, but try to be just as conscious about how you compose the drawing….
This drawing is much more interesting when the edges of the page are considered.
WHY?
Is this a good or bad example of a contour line drawing with a dynamic composition? Why or why not?
Is this a good or bad example of a contour line drawing with a dynamic composition?
Why or why not?
This is a detail of the same drawing.
Pay attention to the incredible amount of detail achieved through contour!
As we begin our in-class drawing, be sure to remember to consider your composition and use your contour line weight to define details.
