Language plays a central role in the learning experience of the child as it enables her to form concepts, explore symbols, analyze a given problem, organize information and interact with her environment. The conceptual understanding of the various school subjects depends on the learner’s language ability as the listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in the school language are a prerequisite for her engagement with and proficiency in all the subjects included in the curriculum. As all school subjects are learnt through language, teachers as well as teacher trainers need to develop a critical understanding of the nature and role of language in the context of the child, the curriculum and the subject knowledge and this assumption has prompted us to design this course named and styled as Language across Curriculum.

The syllabus consists of three specific topic areas:

Unit 1: Language: its nature and scope, the relationship between language and cognition, language and meaning and language and learning

Unit 2: Language and the child, how children acquire language, how the language ability contributes to the cognitive development of the children and their learning needs.

Unit 3: Learning through Language, how language learning at schools takes place across all the school subjects.
