In 2013 the Minnesota Department of Transportation pursued their first mobile lidar project with the help of Continental Mapping as part of the Highway 23 reconstruction project.
The driving factor behind this project was to support and facilitate stringless paving construction with the mobile lidar derived 3D data. To do so, Minnesota Department of Transportation required very high accuracy (1 cm at 1 Sigma), with relative accuracy of the dataset at 0.5cm point-to-point.
Continental Mapping completed thorough survey control to achieve the desired accuracies. Those efforts included RTK placement of 222 registration points (every 500 feet) along alternating sides of the road,
and digital leveling using Trimble R8GNSS dual receivers and DiNi digital levels turned throughout. All loops closed within 0.6 – 1.2 cm. Following acquisition our team completed post processing
including removal of dynamic data, performed breakline extraction, completed QA/QC, and finalized deliverables.
Continental Mapping holds a statewide aerial mapping master con-tract with Minnesota as well as Wisconsin, Indiana and Tennessee.
LOCATION: Cottonwood, Minnesota (120 miles west of Minneapolis)
YEAR COMPLETED: 2013
OBJECTIVE: High accuracy mobile lidar to facilitate stringless paving
KEY POINTS: • Innovation: First mobile lidar project for Minnesota DOT • Accuracy: Extremely high accuracy (1 cm at 1 Sigma) • Savings: Downstream costs savings via the use of the high accuracy surface in stringless paving.
