Directions for Whole Group

Teaching &and using PostersThere are 4 common types of context clues.

There are 4 posters attached that teach about

each type and gives and example. These can be

put up in the classroom after being used in

whole group.

When teaching whole group you can use any book.

Get a book and find difficult vocabulary words

throughout. A great book to use is Baloney by

Jon Scieszka. Show the examples to the children

and see if they can use the posters to help them

find out the meaning of the word.

There is also a poster attached with all 4

types of context clues on one page. This can be

used in a work station for extra help or given

to children to keep at their desk.

Types of Context Clue: Definition

The difficult word is defined in the same sentence.

The definition might be followed after a comma.

Example:

The corral, a pen for confining livestock, had a lot of horses.


Types of Context Clue: Synonym

After a difficult word other words with similar meanings

are used.

The difficult word is followed by a comma and the word “or”.

Example:

The lasso, or rope was used to catch the stray cattle.


Types of Context Clue: Antonym

After a difficult word an antonym is sometimes used.

Look for words- instead, however, but, although, unlike,

or not.

Example:

The cowboy scowled at me, but I just smiled back at him.

Look for words- such as, like, and for example.

Example:

The stampede of cattle were frightened. It was like a lot of wild

animals rushing at you.

Directions for small

group or partner work

These cards are riddles. The difficult word

is in another language. The students need

to match the riddle with the correct English

word.

Make multiple copies of the cards if using

them for partner work. Take these cards

and cut apart the squares. Put them in an

envelope and give them to the students to

match up the riddles with the answers. An

answer key follows.


1. Solve the riddle!

I love to go camping. We always build a lagerfeuer. It is so much fun to roast

marshmallows over the lagerfeuer.

rode it.

The kauboj, instead of the cowgirl won the

rodeo. Everyone thought the girl would

win.

dirty from riding all day.

beautiful golden mane. I always brush her hair after a long

day’s ride.

The boy wore his chapeau de cow-boy, instead of his baseball

cap to the rodeo.

The cowboy played the sehtar, a three stringed

instrument, while we sat around the

campfire.

the horse, on him before you go for a ride.

canvas. It was used to travel across the

Great Plains.

Independent Work

Have the students read the story Rodeo Time

and then answer the questions about context

clues.

Or

You can read the story to the students and

have them answer the questions.

Make sure you go over the 4 types of context

clues and have the posters visible.


Have you ever been to the rodeo? The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest in the world. They are dedicated to benefiting, or helping, kids.

Rodeos have been around for more than 100 years. Cowboys would all come together to celebrate the end of moving their cattle. They would rope cattle and ride broncos, wild horses. These were friendly, fun competitions.

As the years have gone by these rodeos have evolved, or changed into tough competitions. The cowboys are well known and make a lot of money going to rodeos.

The rodeo lasts 3 weeks and there are many events to attend. There is a livestock show where students from all around Texas come to show their animals. The winners get college scholarships.

There are also many vendors who sell anything that has to do with the rodeo. They have a booth and sell items like boots, clothes, food, and toys. There are many activities for children.There is even a carnival for the kids.

The main attraction is the rodeo. The cowboys and cowgirls compete against each other in events such as, barrel racing, bareback riding, calf roping and

bull riding. Bull riders have to

ride a bull and try to stay on for 8 seconds. After the rodeo there is a concert for the people to enjoy.
