USING THE FUELECONOMY GUIDE

The U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) and U.S. Department ofEnergy (DOE) produce the Fuel EconomyGuide to help car buyers choose the mostfuel-efficient vehicle that meets theirneeds. The Guide is published in printand on the Web atwww.fueleconomy.gov. For additionalprint copies, please call DOE’s CleanCities Technical Response Service at 1-800-254-6735 or mail your request to:NREL - Fuel Economy Guide, 15013Denver West Parkway, Golden, CO80401-3305.

Fuel Economy EstimatesMost vehicles in this Guide (other thanplug-in hybrids) have three fuel economyestimates:

A "city" estimate that represents urbandriving, in which a vehicle is started inthe morning (after being parked allnight) and driven in stop-and-go traffic

A "highway" estimate that represents amixture of rural and interstate highwaydriving in a warmed-up vehicle, typicalof longer trips in free-flowing traffic

A "combined" estimate that representsa combination of city driving (55%) andhighway driving (45%)

Estimates for all vehicles are based onlaboratory testing under standardizedconditions to allow for fair comparisons.

Flexible-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which canuse gasoline and E85, have estimates forboth fuels. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles(PHEVs) have estimates for (1) electric-only or blended electric and gasolineoperation and (2) gasoline-only operationand are discussed in more detail on page26. For answers to frequently askedquestions about fuel economy estimates, visit www.fueleconomy.gov.

Annual Fuel Cost EstimatesThis Guide provides annual fuel costestimates, rounded to the nearest $50, foreach vehicle. The estimates are based onthe assumptions that you travel 15,000

miles per year (55% under city drivingconditions and 45% under highway condi-tions) and that fuel costs $3.25/gallon forregular unleaded gasoline and$3.57/gallon for premium. Cost-per-gallonassumptions for vehicles that use otherfuel types are discussed at the beginningof those vehicle sections. The fuel costswere determined in advance to allow timefor printing fuel economy labels and theGuide, and may not reflect current fuelprices.

Visit www.fueleconomy.gov topersonalize fuel costs based on currentfuel prices and your driving habits.

Your Fuel Economy Will VaryEven though EPA recently improved itsmethods for estimating fuel economy, yourvehicle’s fuel economy will almostcertainly vary from EPA’s estimate. Fueleconomy is not a fixed number; it variessignificantly based on where you drive, how you drive, and other factors. Thus, itis impossible for one set of estimates topredict fuel economy precisely for alldrivers in all environments. For example, the following factors can lower yourvehicle’s fuel economy:

Aggressive driving (hard accelerationand braking)

Excessive idling, accelerating, andbraking in stop-and-go traffic

Cold weather (engines are moreefficient when warmed up)

Driving with a heavy load or with the airconditioner running

Improperly tuned engine or under-inflated tires

Use of remote starters•

In addition, small variations in vehiclemanufacturing can cause fuel economyvariations in the same make and model, and some vehicles don’t attain maximumfuel economy until they are "broken in"(around 3,000–5,000 miles).

So, please remember that the EPA ratingsare a useful tool for comparing vehicleswhen car buying, but they may notaccurately predict the fuel economy youwill get. This is also true for annual fuelcost estimates. For more information on

GETTING TO KNOW THE NEW FUEL ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT LABEL EPA recently redesigned the Fuel Economy and Environment labels that must be affixed to new vehicles starting with the 2013 modelyear—some manufacturers also adopted the new label for model year 2012 vehicles. The example below shows a sample label for agasoline vehicle. Slightly different designs are used for flexible-fuel vehicles, electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids. For more in-depthdescriptions of label information for all vehicle types, visit www.fueleconomy.gov.

Annual fuel costbased on 15,000miles per year at$3.25 per gallon forregular unleaded and$3.57 for premium.

New Label Features

Fuel Consumption Rate

This shows fuel use in gallons per 100miles (kilowatt-hours per 100 miles forvehicles using electricity).

Fuel Economy & Greenhouse GasRatingsVehicles are assigned a rating from 1(worst) to 10 (best) for fuel economy andgreenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. TheGHG rating that appears on the labels(window stickers) will be the same as thefuel economy rating for gasolineoperation. Vehicles using other fuels arerated separately based on their fueleconomy and carbon dioxide (CO2)emissions and thus may have differentGHG and fuel economy ratings on theirlabels. For flexible fuel vehicles, GHGratings for ethanol (E85) as well asgasoline operation are listed atwww.fueleconomy.gov.

The GHG rating does not account foremissions generated "upstream" of the

vehicle (e.g., electricity production). Visitwww.fueleconomy.gov. for more aboutupstream emissions.

Below the rating scale, the label alsoprovides an estimate for the amount ofCO2 per mile emitted by that specificvehicle along with an estimate of the CO2emissions for the best vehicle in thatmodel year.

Smog Rating

Vehicles are assigned a rating from 1(worst) to 10 (best) for tailpipe emissionsof pollutants that cause smog and otherlocal air pollution. For those vehicles thatrun on electricity, the tailpipe emissionsare zero.

5-Year Fuel Cost Savings

This measure shows how much more orless it will cost to fuel the vehicle over 5years (rounded to the nearest $50)compared to an "average" new vehicle ofthe same model year. For the 2013 modelyear, EPA estimates that the average newvehicle will get 23 mpg.

Smartphone QR CodeYou can use a smartphone equipped witha scanner "app" to scan this code andaccess additional information about thevehicle on www.fueleconomy.gov. Onwww.fueleconomy.gov, you can alsopersonalize your fuel economy, emissions, and cost estimates based on your localfuel prices and driving habits.

Information for Electric Plug-inVehicles

The new label also includes informationon charge time and driving range for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

UNDERSTANDING THEGUIDE LISTINGS

We hope you’ll find the Fuel EconomyGuide easy to use! Fuel economy andannual fuel cost data are organized byvehicle class (see page 3 for a list ofclasses). Within each class, vehicles arelisted alphabetically by manufacturer andmodel.

Vehicle models with different features, such as engine size or transmission type, are listed as different vehicles. Engine andtransmission attributes are shown in thefirst column under the model name.

Additional attributes needed to distinguishamong vehicles (e.g., fuel type, suggestedfuel grade) are listed in the "Notes"column. A legend for abbreviations isprovided on page 6.

A "P" in the "Notes" column indicates thatthe manufacturer recommends that the

vehicle be fueled with premium-gradegasoline, and a "PR" indicates that themanufacturer requires premium. Thehigher price of premium fuel is reflected inthe annual fuel cost of these vehicles.

The most fuel-efficient vehicles in eachclass and alternative fuel vehicles areindicated with special markings (seediagram below). Vehicles that can usemore than one kind of fuel have an entryfor each fuel type.

Interior passenger and cargo volumes arelocated in the index at the back of theGuide.

WHY SOME VEHICLES ARENOT LISTED

Light-duty fuel economy regulations do notapply to

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) andpassenger vans with a gross vehicle

weight rating (GVWR) of more than10,000 pounds—GVWR is the vehicleweight plus carrying capacity

Other vehicles with a GVWR of 8,500pounds or more or a curb weight over6,000 pounds

Therefore, manufacturers do not have toestimate their fuel economy, and fueleconomy labels are not posted on theirwindows.

Also, fuel economy information on somevehicles is not available in time to beprinted in the Guide. However, you canfind more up-to-date information atwww.fueleconomy.gov.

TAX INCENTIVES ANDDISINCENTIVES

Federal Tax Credits

You may be eligible for a federal incometax credit of up to $7,500 if you purchase aqualifying electric or plug-in hybrid vehiclein 2012–13.

Visit www.fueleconomy.gov for moreinformation on qualifying models, creditamounts, and phase-out dates.

Gas Guzzler Tax

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 requires autocompanies to pay a "gas guzzler" tax onthe sale of cars with exceptionally low fueleconomy. Such vehicles are identified inthe Guide by the word "Tax" in the "Notes"column. In the dealer showroom, thewords "Gas Guzzler" and the tax amountare listed on the vehicle’s fuel economylabel. The tax does not apply to lighttrucks.

WHY CONSIDER FUELECONOMY?

Save Money

You could save as much as $1,700 in fuelcosts each year by choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicle in a particular class. Thiscan add up to thousands of dollars over avehicle’s lifetime. Fuel-efficient modelscome in all shapes and sizes, so you neednot sacrifice utility or size.

Each vehicle listing in the Fuel EconomyGuide provides an estimated annual fuelcost (see page i). The online guide atwww.fueleconomy.gov features anannual fuel cost calculator that allows youto insert your local gasoline prices andtypical driving conditions (percentage ofcity and highway driving) to obtain the

most accurate fuel cost information foryour vehicle.

Reduce Oil Dependence Costs

Buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle canhelp reduce our dependence onpetroleum. About 45% of the oil used toproduce the gasoline you put in your tankis imported. The United States uses about19 million barrels of oil per day, two-thirdsof which is used for transportation. Oildependence cost the U.S. economyaround $500 billion in 2011 alone.

Reduce Climate Change

Climate change is widely viewed as themost significant long-term threat to theglobal environment, and human-madeemissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs)are very likely the cause of most of theobserved global warming over the last 50years.

Burning fossil fuels such as gasoline anddiesel releases carbon dioxide (CO2) andother GHGs into the atmosphere, contributing to global climate change. CO2is the most important human-made GHG,and highway vehicles account for roughlya quarter (1.6 billion tons) of U.S. CO2emissions each year.

Every gallon of gasoline your vehicle burnsputs about 20 pounds of CO2 into theatmosphere; the average vehicle emitsaround 5 to 8 tons of CO2 each year.Unlike other forms of vehicle pollution,CO2 emissions cannot be reduced bypollution control technologies. They canonly be reduced by burning less fuel or byburning fuel that contains less carbon.

One of the most important things you cando to reduce your contribution to climatechange is to buy a vehicle with better fueleconomy. Switching from a vehicle thatgets 20 mpg to one that gets 25 mpg can

reduce CO2 emissions by 10 tons over thevehicle’s lifetime, more than a year’s worthof use.

You can also reduce your contribution toclimate change by

Getting the best fuel economy out ofyour car

Using a low-carbon fuel, such ascompressed natural gas (CNG) orelectricity from a renewable resourcesuch as wind or hydropower

Walking, biking, or taking public transitmore often

FUELING OPTIONS

Ethanol Blends – E85 and E10

Ethanol is a domestically produced, renewable fuel made primarily from starch-based crops such as corn. It may also bemade from "cellulosic biomass," such ascrop residues and wood, but this is not yetdone on a large scale. The use of ethanolas a vehicle fuel can reduce greenhousegas emissions and U.S. dependence onpetroleum.

E10 is a blend of 10% ethanol and 90%gasoline and is legal for use in any

FUEL ECONOMY AND ANNUAL FUEL COST RANGES FOR VEHICLE CLASSES

The graph below provides the fuel economy and annual fuel cost ranges for the vehicles in each class so you can see where a givenvehicle’s fuel economy and cost fall within its class. Combined city and highway MPG estimates are used; these assume you will drive55% in the city and 45% on the highway. Annual fuel costs assume that you travel 15,000 miles each year and fuel costs $3.25/ gallonfor regular unleaded gasoline, $3.57/gallon for premium, $3.95/gallon for diesel, and $0.12/kWh for electricity. Visitwww.fueleconomy.gov to calculate the annual fuel cost for a specific vehicle based on your own driving conditions and fuel prices.

gasoline-powered vehicle. More than 95%of U.S. gasoline contains up to 10%ethanol to boost octane, meet air qualityrequirements, or satisfy the RenewableFuel Standard.

E85 is a high-level ethanol-gasoline blendcontaining 51% to 83% ethanol, dependingon the season and geographic location.Drivers can use E85 in flexible fuelvehicles (FFVs), which are speciallydesigned to run on gasoline, E85, or anymixture of the two. FFVs are offered byseveral vehicle manufacturers. Todetermine whether your vehicle is an FFV,check the inside of your car’s fuel fillerdoor for an identification sticker or consultyour owner’s manual. More than twothousand filling stations in the UnitedStates currently sell E85. Visitafdc.energy.gov/locator/stations/ to findstations near you.

There is no noticeable difference in vehicleperformance when low-level ethanolblends are used. However, FFVs operating

on E85 usually experience a 25–30% dropin fuel economy due to ethanol’s lowerenergy content relative to gasoline.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a domestically producedrenewable fuel manufactured fromvegetable oils or animal fats for use indiesel vehicles. Using biodiesel in place ofpetroleum diesel reduces greenhouse gasemissions and contributes to nationalenergy security.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel can be blended with petroleumdiesel at any percentage. The mostcommon biodiesel blend is B20, whichcontains 20% biodiesel and 80%petroleum diesel. B5 (5% biodiesel and95% petroleum diesel) is another commonblend. All vehicle manufacturers haveapproved biodiesel blends up to andincluding B5 for use in all diesel engines. However, using higher-level biodieselblends may affect vehicle warranties.Check your owner’s manual or with your

vehicle manufacturer to determine the rightblend for your vehicle.

Purchase commercial-grade biodieselfrom a reputable dealer. Never refuelwith recycled grease or vegetable oilthat has not been converted tobiodiesel. It will damage your engine.

More than 250 stations currently dispenseB20. Visit afdc.energy.gov/locator/stations/to find service stations selling biodieselnear you.

Premium- vs Regular-GradeGasoline

Regular unleaded is the recommendedgasoline for most cars. Using a higheroctane gasoline than recommended by theowner’s manual does not improveperformance or fuel efficiency; it only costsmore money. Check your owner’s manualto determine the lowest grade of fuel youcan use.

DIESEL VEHICLES Diesel-powered vehicles typically get 30–35% more miles per gallon than comparable vehicles powered by gasoline. Diesel enginesare inherently more energy efficient, and diesel fuel contains 10% more energy per gallon than gasoline. In addition, new advances indiesel engine technology have improved performance, reduced engine noise and fuel odor, and decreased emissions of harmful airpollutants. Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels also help reduce emissions from these vehicles. Annual fuel costs below are estimated assuming 15,000 miles of travel each year (55% city and 45% highway) and a diesel fuel cost of$3.95 per gallon.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES Electric vehicles (EVs), also called battery electric vehicles(BEVs), are propelled by one or more electric motors powered byrechargeable battery packs. EVs are energy-efficient and reduceour dependence on petroleum since electricity is produced fromdomestic resources. They emit no tailpipe pollutants, although thepower plant producing the electricity may emit pollution.

Electric motors have several performance benefits. They arequiet, have instant torque for quick acceleration, and require lessmaintenance than internal combustion engines.

Current EVs have a shorter driving range than gasoline or hybridvehicles, and their range is more sensitive to driving style, drivingconditions, and accessory use. Fully recharging the battery pack

can take several hours—though a “quick charge” to 80% capacitymay take as little as 30 minutes—and options for charging thevehicle away from home may be limited. EVs are also moreexpensive than conventional vehicles and hybrids due to the costof the large battery packs. Still, manufacturers are working hard toimprove the driving range and reduce the cost of these vehicles, and public charging stations may become more common in thefuture.

A federal income tax credit of up to $7,500 is currently available toconsumers purchasing a qualifying EV. Visitwww.fueleconomy.gov for additional information on EVs,including tax incentives.

PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are hybrids with highcapacity batteries that can be charged by plugging them into anelectrical outlet or charging station. PHEVs can store enoughelectricity from the power grid to significantly reduce theirpetroleum consumption under typical driving conditions.

There are two basic PHEV configurations:

Series PHEVS, also called Extended Range ElectricVehicles (EREVs). The electric motor on these vehicles is theonly power source that turns the wheels; the gasoline engineonly generates electricity. Series PHEVs can run solely onelectricity until the battery needs to be recharged. The gasolineengine will then generate the electricity needed to power theelectric motor. For short trips, these vehicles may not use anygasoline.

Parallel or Blended PHEVs. Both the engine and electricmotor are mechanically connected to the wheels, and both maypropel the vehicle. The vehicle may operate using bothelectricity and gasoline at the same time, using electricity only,or using gasoline only.

PHEVs also have different battery capacities, allowing some totravel farther on electricity than others. PHEV fuel economy, likethat of EVs and regular hybrids, can be sensitive to driving style, driving conditions, and accessory use. When operating in pureelectric mode, PHEVs emit no tailpipe pollutants, although thepower plant producing the electricity may emit pollution.

Charging a PHEV’s battery typically takes several hours, but a"quick charge" to 80% capacity may take 30 minutes or less. However, PHEVs don’t have to be plugged in to be driven. Theycan be fueled solely with gasoline, like a conventional hybrid, butwill not achieve maximum range or fuel economy withoutcharging.

PHEVs use less petroleum and cost less to fuel than conventionalhybrids, but they are more expensive to purchase.

A federal income tax credit of up to $7,500 is currently available toconsumers purchasing a qualifying PHEV. Visitwww.fueleconomy.gov for additional information on PHEVs,including tax incentives.

HYBRID-ELECTRIC VEHICLES

It’s no coincidence that some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles for the 2013 model year are hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs). Hybridscombine the best features of the internal combustion engine with an electric motor and can significantly improve fuel economy withoutsacrificing performance or driving range. HEVs may also be configured to provide increased performance. HEVs are primarily propelled by an internal combustion engine, just like conventional vehicles. However, they also convert energynormally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor. The electricmotor assists the engine when accelerating or hill climbing and at low speeds where internal combustion engines are least efficient.Unlike all-electric vehicles, HEVs do not need to be plugged into an external source of electricity to be recharged; conventional gasolineand regenerative braking provide all of the energy that the vehicle needs. Annual fuel cost is estimated assuming 15,000 miles of travel each year (55% city and 45% highway) and a fuel cost of $3.25 per gallonfor regular unleaded gasoline or $3.57 for premium gasoline.

COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS VEHICLESCompressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles produce fewer smog-forming and greenhouse gas pollutants and reduce our dependenceon petroleum. CNG fuel is normally dispensed in "equivalent gallons," where one equivalent gallon is equal to 121.5 std. cu. ft. ofnatural gas. Therefore, the fuel economy values are shown in miles per gasoline equivalent (MPGe). Annual fuel cost estimatesare based on an average fuel price of $2.05 per gasoline equivalent gallon of CNG. The driving range is shown in miles andrepresents the distance the vehicle can travel on a full tank (or tanks) of fuel during combined city and highway driving (55% cityand 45% highway).

FUEL CELL VEHICLESFuel cell vehicles (FCVs) may not reach the mass market for a decade or more, but a limited number will be available for sale orlease in 2012-13 to demonstration fleets in areas with a readily accessible hydrogen supply. FCVs are propelled by electric motorspowered by fuel cells, which produce electricity from the chemical energy of hydrogen. Fuel cell technology is more efficient thaninternal combustion engines and environmentally cleaner—the only by-product of a hydrogen fuel cell is water. However, manychallenges must be overcome before FCVs are mass-marketed and sold at local dealerships. For more information about FCVs,visit www.fueleconomy.gov and the Fuel Cell Technologies Program Web site at www.eere.energy.gov/hydrogenandfuelcells/.

ETHANOL FLEXIBLE FUEL VEHICLES

Ethanol flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) are designed by the original manufacturer to operate on gasoline, E85, or any mixture of the twofuels. Annual fuel cost is estimated assuming 15,000 miles of travel each year (55% city and 45% highway) and an average fuel cost of$3.24 per gallon for E85, $3.25 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, and $3.57 per gallon for premium unleaded gasoline. Theprice of ethanol is highly variable from region to region; it is typically lower in the Midwestern United States and higher in other areas. Therefore, actual consumer experience may differ significantly from the annual fuel cost estimate presented here. Fuel economy and driving range values are shown for both gasoline and E85. When operating your FFV on mixtures of gasoline andE85, such as when alternating between using these fuels, your driving range and fuel economy values will be somewhere betweenthose listed for the two fuels, depending on the actual percentage of gasoline and E85 in the tank.

IMPROVE YOUR FUEL ECONOMY Drive More Efficiently

Aggressive driving (speeding and rapidacceleration and braking) can lower yourgas mileage by as much as 33% athighway speeds and 5% around town.

Observe the speed limit. Each 5 MPH youdrive over 60 MPH can reduce your fueleconomy by 7%.

Avoid idling. Idling gets 0 miles per gallonand costs you as much as $0.04 perminute.

Using cruise control on the highway helpsyou maintain a constant speed and, in mostcases, will save gas.

Keep Your Car in Shape

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tunecan improve gas mileage by about 4%.

Keeping tires inflated to the recommendedpressure and using the recommendedgrade of motor oil can improve fueleconomy by up to 5%.

The manufacturer’s recommended tirepressure can be found on the tireinformation placard and/or vehiclecertification label located on the vehicledoor edge, doorpost, glove-box door, orinside the trunk lid.

Keep your tires aligned and balanced.•

Replacing a clogged air filter can improvegas mileage on older cars with carburetedengines.

Plan and Combine Trips

A warmed-up engine is more fuel-efficientthan a cold one. Many short trips takenfrom a cold start can use twice as muchfuel as one multipurpose trip covering thesame distance.

Note: Letting your car idle to warm updoesn’t help your fuel economy; it actuallyuses more fuel and creates more pollution.

Other Solutions

Avoid carrying unneeded items. An extra100 lbs. can decrease fuel economy by1–2%.

A roof rack or carrier provides additionalcargo space and may allow you to meetyour needs with a smaller car. However, aloaded roof rack can decrease your fueleconomy by 5%.

Reduce aerodynamic drag and improveyour fuel economy by placing items insidethe trunk whenever possible.
