Preface These settings are designed to be an easy way for directors to include handbells during the singing of hymns. Since the release of the first volume, many directors have told me that their ringers, whether accomplished or tentative, feel a sense of excitement and accomplishment in working on this music and sharing it as part of the whole worship experience.

The arrangements are fun and interesting, but don’t demand the kind of pressure as a handbells-only piece. There are many options and a wide variety of styles, so you are sure to find something that engages your ringers and congregation. Unlike a lot of handbell and organ music where the organ is cast in a supporting role, these volumes enlist the organist as an integral part of the ensemble.

There is an introduction and final verse for each hymn tune. In most cases there is a provision for an additional verse accompaniment. If you want your choir to ring more than this, they can ring out of your hymnal, but it really isn’t necessary for the bells to play on every verse. These arrangements insure that the bells will sound out when they do play.

The layout is flexible—you ring what bells you have in the 3 to 5 octave range. No parentheses, no brackets, no thinking about what to leave out. This was not an omission or afterthought; the arrangements were written to keep a maximum number of ringers involved. Directors should feel free to adapt the instructions according to their own sensibilities and the needs of the group. Please consider using the “Final Verse” setting on a middle verse if it fits that particular text better.

Hymns in this volume were chosen for their usefulness throughout the liturgical year. A comprehensive index, at the end of this volume, will refer you to hymns in volume one which have additional seasonal texts.

Optional "sound cloud" introduction: begin with singing bells, when they are sounding add the triangle roll, softly.

Then, randomly, groups 1 through 4 may play their fragments ad lib. Groups may vary any or all of these elements: tempo, dynamics, or tone color (by playing them on chimes.)

After the mood has been established, Groups 1 through 4 stop their patterns. While the singing bells (and triangle, if desired) continue, begin playing at measure 1, stems up melody only, on chimes (optional) to give a complete melodic play-through. The upper octaveof chimes should be omitted in 3 octave groups.

* From here through measure 18 may be used as an alternate verse accompaniment, playing all the notes and using chimes or bells ad lib.** The fermatas are to be used (or not) depending on what hymnal version you are using. For an unmetered plainsong version (i.e. The Episcopal Hymnal 1982) there should be no fermatas. For metered versions (i.e. The Chalice Hymnal, the 1989 United Methodist Hymnal), fermatas should beexactly three quarter notes in length.
