Kim’s nature photography has evolved into a deeper occupation as a conservation photographer. The work of conservation photographers moves beyond the mere creation of photography that celebrates the beauty of nature, into a position of leadership that requires photographers to organize conservation initiatives that utilize their work to make a meaningful difference for environmental conservation of threatened areas. Grassroots environmental groups, non-governmental organizations, and state and federal agencies have utilized Kim’s work for conservation purposes, including the Oklahoma Office of the Secretary of the Environment, the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Oklahoma Biological Survey and Oklahoma Natural Areas Registry, and the Illinois River Watershed Partnership Group among others. Kim’s latest project is the Illinois River Survey, a collaborative, image-based conservation photography initiative Baker organized that has the mission of creating and using compelling photography that has the power to inform and change people’s minds about the need for conservation and preservation of the Illinois River, its tributaries, Flint Creek and Barren Fork River, and its impoundment, Tenkiller Ferry Lake. May 2011, the Illinois River Survey brought together a team of Oklahoma photographers together with scientists, land and river managers, water officials, conservationists, and river advocates, who explored and documented important components of the Illinois River Watershed in a three-day photographic survey. The survey group focused on the Illinois River’s unique ecological communities, the rivers ecosystems - with an emphasis on the natural services the rivers provides, and the history and unique cultural heritage of the Illinois River to the region, local river communities, and Tahlequah.

In December of 2011, Kim published and co-authored, The Illinois River Survey: A Visual Record. The conservation photography book illustrates the May 2011 Illinois River Survey and contains a collection of important stories about the Illinois River, told both from a historical and ecological perspective and includes a special foreword by Oklahoma river advocate and former Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson. During the first of my three assignments to England in 1955 – 1959, I became interested in photography. At that point in time all of the flyers carried either English or Japanese range finder cameras. Another popular camera was the small Minolta spy type used by the Russian KBG, we thought we were big time when we acquired one. I shot a lot of film on trips all over Europe, and like everyone else had to wait for “Boots the Chemist” (Drug Store) to give us the good and the bad news. Thanks to the photo god for digital camera cards and Wal-Mart. It was during the 1957 World’s Fair in Brussels that my interest in photography really peaked, as we made 29 R&R flights taking military families to see this photo rich event. Taking pictures of the international items on display was great, but getting a shot of the new Russian Sputnik which had just been put in orbit ahead of the USA was the prize. On my return home in 1959, I was stationed at Mac Dill AFB in Florida and continued taking family and trip pictures; however, my two young daughters were not crazy about being dressed up and posed for pictures. Our time there did not last long before we got orders to Guam for one year. I packed up my Minolta camera and went on to a new photographic adventure, taking pictures in Guam, Iwo Jima, Saipan Tokyo, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The cameras were really cheap when purchased overseas, and that helped us military photographers. Following this tour I was sent to Eglin AFB in Florida where I put your tax dollars to work while learning new post production skills. We could get free gun camera film from fighter aircraft that was outdated for government use, but still good. The base hobby shop taught us how to load the 35mm film from large bulk rolls into the 25 or 36 shot Kodak cans, and we found that we could squeeze a few more inches of film into the cans. When we finished taking pictures they then showed us how to develop the negative strip, and how to cut and dry them in heated wall lockers. The next steps were like magic; we enlarged the pictures and put them through the chemical process. Seeing the end product never ceased to amaze me, you could control size and how dark or light the print was. Our next move in 1963 was to a Lockbourne AFB in Ohio near Columbus. I was home sick for the green fields of England, so I requested it and was reassigned to Mildenhall AFB from 1965 – 1968. During these years I again traveled throughout Europe and got some fantastic pictures of castles, churches, villages, and towns. I also, shot many pictures from the aircraft during air to air refueling, and even got a photo of an SR-71 that we refueled. In 1968 we again moved, this time to Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. Spending five years in this beautiful area, which was great for photography with the plains, western towns, and the Black Hills where the presidents are carved. I think it was here that I bought my first of several Nikon cameras. I have had an FTN, 8008, 5000, D-70, and now a D-90. You can never have too many cameras if they are Nikons. The only exception was a Sony digital still camera MVC-FD73 that crept into my inventory, and took a 3x5 card on which you could record about 21 pictures. I still have it, and think it would work again. However there are no batteries or cards around anymore. It was 1970 when I got my first of two isolated tours to CCK Air Base on the island of Taiwan, where we flew Combat Lighting Missions into the Gulf of Tonkin. I got some great pictures of air to air refueling and our fighters off of the carriers below us. Taiwan is very picturesque, as were some of our other stops in Thailand. I photographed the people, floating markets, and the gold domed temples. Once again I requested to go back to England, and in 1972 went back for what would be an eight year tour. I found even more photo ops and added them to my photo books. On my return to the states in 1980 I came to Tinker AFB and flew with the 8th TDCS until I retired in 1983. Our squadron made several trips to England and I tried to be on all of them, getting more photos of my other home. I made several trips to Mexico, taking photos at the many beach resorts. Although retired, I felt that I had to have a job to go to each morning. So the next week I applied and went to work for the Boeing Aircraft Company as a project engineer and later finally retired. During those years I was ask to cover the many projects that the company was involved with. The most memorable was when I was tasked to work with the Navy in 1995, and take photographs at the Alfred P Marrah Building bombing site. I spent a day and a night taking pictures, and turned in 270 photos of the destruction. Some of these were published in a Navy news article that year - they operated the Arc Lights that Boeing provided. In 2006, 2009, and 2011 I received two metals and a monetary reward for photos that I entered into contests at Tinker AFB. It was Bill Webster’s brother in law that told me about the Metro Camera Club, and went with me to my first meeting. I asked him how long he had been a member. He said that he was not in the club but thought I would like it giving my interest in photo- graphy. He said that he had church practice on Mon- days and would not be able to attend anyway. I have been with the club for several years now, and the rest is history. We have a great group of photographers who always go out of their way to help individuals improve their skills.
