On November 5th the children will participate in the German school tradition of
celebrating St. Martinstag by marching in their own parade.
GSC music teacher, Brian G., will begin the procession at 11:40 am. Brian will start
by gathering the E classes. Then, they will march downstairs to gather K and Pre K
to lead them to Fellowship Hall. M1 and G1 will already be in Fellowship Hall.
The children will carry their very own glowing Laterne as they march around a
darkened Fellowship Hall. They will sing their favorite St. Martinstag songs, like:
Laterne, Laterne and Ich geh’ mit meine Laterne.
Students from M1 and G1 will read the book, "Sankt Martin und der kleine Bär."
Then, we will watch a You Tube video about Sankt Martin.
Parents, fellow students from the other classes, and teachers are invited to
Fellowship Hall at 11:30 am. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
Gänse shaped cookies and drinks will be served in Gilbert Hall (the Pause room)
during regular Pause time.
Many thanks to our photographer, Toby Junker, Parent Volunteer. Thanks are also
extended to 6 of our students and parents who volunteered to bake the Goose
shaped cookies.
Team Update & Thank You Parent Volunteer, Nolan Lambert, has taken on the responsibility of publishing
future GSC newsletters. We look forward to the changes he will bring in both setup
and content! Welcome, Nolan!

SAVE THE DATE….
Please check your schedule and reserve Friday, December 16th from 10 am to noon to help set up the hall at
St. James on Farmington Avenue. Set up does not take long if we have a large group. Children are invited to
help, as well!
Weihnachtsfeier Gift Raffle Baskets & Planning
Sign up sheets asking for adult volunteers to help organize Weihnachtsfeier will be
distributed separately. Please check your schedule and reserve some time in
advance. We will need volunteers to help set up the hall a day or two beforehand
(to be announced) and also on the day of the event. We could use all of the help
we can get.
Dear GSC Students and Parents: It is time to begin planning our next big celebration in December. We would like to do a raffle again this year and have decided to involve each of our classes in this project. We ask that each student contribute one (or more) items for the gift basket theme assigned to his/her classroom. There is NO LIMIT (up or down) on what the item should cost. The following is a list of themes that were assigned.
The school will provide baskets and everything else to make for a nice presentation of these items. If you have any baskets you would like to provide, we’d be happy to use them. You may also opt to collect money in your classroom and assign one person to buy the items for the gift basket(s).
PLEASE DROP OFF YOUR ITEMS To Gail McCloud BY
SATURDAY, December 10, 2016
The gift baskets will be raffled off during Weihnachtsfeier on December 17th. 1) Pre-School Fun Basket Pre-K (Meike) 2) Arts & Crafts Basket K / L&S (Anna) 3) Game & Movie Basket E1 & 2 (Evis) 4) Game & Movie Basket E3 (Elisabeth) 5) Christmas Basket E4 (Amy & Lia) 6) Christmas Basket G1 (Leila) 7) Boys or Girls Basket G2 (Diana) 8) Boys or Girls Basket M1 (Christine) 9) Gift Card Tree M5 (Bärbel) 10) Chocolate Lovers Basket A1 (Kristin) 11) Dog or Cat Basket A2 (Betsy) 12) Dog or Cat Basket A3 (Elke) 13) Breakfast Basket A4 (John) 14) Cookies Galore A5 (Dieter)

Inclement Weather Policy
Fall has just begun, but the German School of CT would like to inform you
early about our inclement weather policy:
In case of school closing or delayed opening, the Principal will call the local
storm center to have that information broadcast and will then notify all
teachers and officers.
The teachers will call their students.
If you are in doubt regarding the closing of the school, please contact your
(child’s) teacher – please DO NOT call the Principal in order not to block the
phone line.
The following stations will broadcast the closing/delayed opening of the GSC -
West Hartford, in the case of inclement weather:
CBS WFSB – Channel 3.1
WWW.WFSB.COM
NBC Connecticut WVIT – Channel 30.1
www.nbcconnecticut.com
Please make sure to have this information at hand throughout the winter
as well as the contact information for your (child’s) teacher.
High School Students:
Apply for Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program
There are a number of ways to spend time abroad, but often teachers and students
forget about high school exchange programs beyond summer or partner school
exchanges. Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) is jointly funded by
the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag and offers highly motivated high school
students full scholarships for study abroad.
The program has been in place since 1983 and students apply through their
appropriate regional programs.
For more
information,
including eligibility,
please visit the
Congress-Bundestag
Youth Exchange
Program website.
